This line of thought as permeated TGG ever since Sanchez survived the June 1st cut. And now it seems to gaining steam. First, Geno IS very talented, but very rookie-ish. While we all hoped for our very own RG3, Geno seems to be more in the mold of Rogers, Eli, and others who couldn't crack the line up day one. Play Mark for the full year, sit Geno Smith. Geno will most definitely benefit from week after week of practice to hone his footwork and to master the play book, which is especially complicated. If the Jets only had Geno and last year's back up or some other team's cast off on the roster, then the pressure to start Geno would be even more glaring. But fortunately, we still have Mark Sanchez, who seems to be prone to his old tricks but also seems to be quite adequate in MM's WCO. If I were Idzik and I wanted Geno to succeed, he'd ride the pine, watch the games unfold, hone his skills in practice, and bide his time. It's Sanchez we're talking about. Geno won't have to wait lone. In the best case scenario, Mark plays well enough to hold serve throughout the season. This give Geno a full 16 games season and 16 weeks of practice to get it all right. Learning from Sanchez is a double gift. Geno will learn what to do and more importantly, WHAT NOT TO DO. Next season when Geno is ready to take the reigns, he will be going into his 2nd training camp under MM and his new WCO. He will be LIGHT YEARS ahead of where he is today. Just like we expect a lot more out of Hill with a year under his belt, the same will hold true for Geno. Plus if Sanchez surprises all of us and gets us the last WC spot, Idzik will easily get at least a 2nd round draft pick for him. Plus Mark's trade will not require the new team to take on a huge salary. Hell, with 3 playoff runs in 5 years, Idzik may even steal a 1st. In summary: Regardless of how Geno does in game 3, and with Mark showing a thimble full of promise, sit Geno for the year then make the switch. We'll get a much more polished Geno and a lot more in return for Sanchez.
Sanchez is NOT adequate in MM's WCO. A key part of MM's WCO is the screen pass and Sanchez has thrown more pick 6s on called screen passes than successful screen passes. Every time I see the jets call a screen play with Sanchez I cringe. If Geno can start and be anything better than the worst QB in the NFL then the jets absolutely should start Geno. He's going to make mistakes, but at least he might learn from them and not repeat them next year. Starting Sanchez gives you absolutely nothing - he'll keeping being an inconsistent turnover machine and reps that could more usefully be used on Geno will be wasted on Sanchez. The Jets are going to have a huge amount of money next year to spend on free agents and you absolutely have to know whether you need a QB or whether Geno is your QB before you go on your shopping spree if you're planning to make a run.
That's your argument? "Stay out of the board"? That's rich and very thoughtful. And where exactly did you get "hate" from? I don't hate Mark and should he start I'll be rooting for him. But tell me how a QB who in his 5th year still makes rookie mistakes can be anything but stupid. You can blame new system if the timing is off, or if the route is off. Mistakes that Sanchez makes are not related to the system, they are fundamental. But yeah sure, I dare point out the obvious so of course it must be me hating him. So dismiss all I said. Mark is great, he'll turn it all around.
Doesn'T make sensE. If geno plays well it would be for one game only. If the jets bench Sanchez for that one performance the jets would officially be known as a joke and no future qb will want to come here. Sanchez deserves another shot with a real oc for once. Give him that chance. Sent from my LG-VM670 using Tapatalk 2
sanchez was not helped by having rex as his hc & the sh*t at oc before this year ... however he pretty much is who he is at this point ... expecting any type of drastic improvement from him year 5 is really unlikely. MM will decide if Geno is ready to handle the load to start the year (and the preseason game against the Giants should give us a good indication as well) ... he's a good person to have make that judgement ... and if delaying his time to come in will better serve his long term success then expect the 2013 season to be sacrificed for better long term odds. i personally am thinking we will see Geno come in midseason during the bye week
It would be more about Sanchez not being able to show he's improved than anything. All Geno has to do is show he's ready. NO ONE is going to consider the Jets a joke because they don't start captain headband. Well, maybe some delusional Sanchez fans would. You honestly think the Jets would be considered a joke if they didn't start Sanchez this year? I mean honestly?? ROFLMFAO! The jets owe Sanchez nothing more than his bloated salary!
Geno showing he is ready really is the key. There is absolutely no shame in a 2nd round pick QB not being ready to lead an NFL team to victory from week 1 of his rookie season. The Jets don't owe Sanchez anything. Doesn't mean they shouldn't utilize him until Geno is ready. Putting Geno in before he is ready is akin to playing with fire.
Young QB's have rough starts. The odds are that Geno is going 1-3 or so whenever the Jets choose to start him. If they make that choice when they are already 2-5? Well, that's their bad.
I know you believe he needs a one shot evaluation right now, but I believe that's a very short sighted way of developing the most important position on the team. If he doesn't pan out in his rookie year, then we draft another QB who may also very well bust... further, Geno may move on and succeed. It's happened before. You can't put all your eggs in one basket. Confidence is a major part of Sanchez's issues and that has to do with the roster management and the fact that they expected him to be a Super Bowl champion from day 1. He came damn close, the Jets let the roster deteroriate around him, and simultaneously expected him to elevate his game to elite levels to compensate. This is Madden video game management, not professional organization management. If you could paralell the Sanchez scenario into a normal run of the mill business, the management involved would be enjoying a well deserved vacation in the form of a pink slip. Tannenbaum did get axed but he was scapegoated to give the fans something to feed on. I believe strongly that the Jets need to not repeat the mistakes of handling Sanchez with Geno Smith. There is no rush to get him in there. Further, no matter what Geno Smith does, there is absolutely NOTHING precluding the Jets from investing another high draft pick on a QB next year IF they feel that player is the best available player on the board at the time.
No doubt. The purpose of preseason evaluation... So lets evaluate our unknowns (Geno). Sent from my HTC6990LVW using Tapatalk
he can, but i think its gonna be tough for him. mark hasnt played horrendus up to this point. he has made mistakes, but he has overall looked better than last year (not saying much but its a start). if geno cant play better than mark has, then what is the purpose of forcing him out there? our beloved jets have not had a great run at developing qb's, especially since we just happen to throw the young guys out there for the most part. might as well let this one learn and set him up for success rather than failure. its a down year for us anyway, and since we are not a win now team and wont be for a few years, why not bring geno up the right way instead of the trial by fire way that hasnt worked for this organization.
Agreed. Evaluate & develop Geno the right way. If he's ready play him but if not...take your lumps w/ Sanchez. Jets have 7 picks in the top 100 next draft. They will be loading up on "BPA" types. Given the way the draft class is shaping up they'll be some points where a suitable QB prospect will be available to them. Even if Geno steps up & is definitely the long term answer...they likely still will be looking at QB's as Sanchez & his contract will be shown the door. No need to sacrifice the future for short term success. Especially short term success tied to a rookie QB who looks like he needs another 6 weeks or so of coaching/development. Sacrificing the future is what got the Jets in this mess to begin w/.
Gabbert, Weeden, now Vick all named starters this week. I won't be surprised if the Jets blow it and do the same with Sanchez. By blow it, I mean allow fans to still wonder how good Geno is compared to Sanchez.
Sanchez doesn't deserve nothing. The Jets are already considered a joke around the country, and Sanchez is part of the reason why.
I hope the jets aren't making decisions based on what the fans are wondering. If there's no way geno is going to be ready to start week 1 then just go ahead and name headband the starter. If he has a shot to win this thing then give him an opportunity to do that.
Being in the sit Geno for a year camp, I say let Headband take the pounding for the first 9 games and should he come out of that in one piece, spot start Geno but all the while, keep Geno's head in the game and let him learn what to do and knowing Headband, what NOT to do during a game.
