Play Rex Ryan for a minute. Most teams use this week of practice plus 3/4 of the 3rd preseason game as a last effort to gel as a team and prepare for WEEK 1. What would you do?
If Geno's throwing ankle is still bad enough to negate any practice time this week with the 1's, then I guess Rex has no choice but to call it a wrap and go with Sanchez, giving him as much prep time as possible including 3rd pre-season game.
Because it hasn't been announced and Geno is Idzik's QB. Me? I'd nut up and make the call Monday and go with that for the rest of pre-season.
Really am not sure where you are pulling that from.... Sanchez did nothing tonight to separate himself.. Had a good first drive but then after that, more of the same shit. This is not a normal preseason circumstance where teams already know their starting QB. This will play out through the 4th preseason game with the announcement coming the week of the Buc game.
I am just using past knowledge. Think about how Rex started Mark through much worse last season. Geno is hurt. Still does not grasp an NFL offense or have the reps. In the end, Mark will start Week 1. Everyone discussing it is just wasting their breath or typing.
I should have added those. Picking Sanchez is picking the guy a bit more prepared for the speed of the game but also a guy that you live and die by every week. Can he be serviceable with a better o-line, better running game, and a new OC? Picking Geno guarantees moments of greatness with a lot of rookie growing pains, but may be the way to go for the future. I could live with either.
Where do you get that Geno does not grasp an NFL offense I mean Marty hasn't even implied that He just hasn't gotten a chance to prove it on the field since Rex gave Mark an extra series week 1
That is why he needs to start against the Giants. We all know how Sanchez will look against the Giants, already. Give Geno a shot. If the Jets don't, I can only assume it is because he is not grasping the offense fast enough since everyone wants him to start. Yep. Includes me for sure. I can't help it.
A rational NFL team would cut Mark Sanchez at this point, realizing that he was not the guy that was going to get them over the top and that every minute he was on the roster he was causing a veil of confusion to be lowered over the process of finding that guy. I'll admit that I don't see somebody else on the roster that I am 100% sure about starting for the Jets this season. However I'm only about 2% sure that Mark Sanchez can provide what they need and so the fact that I'm not willing to anoint Geno Smith yet or vouch for Greg McElroy's durability doesn't make me want to keep a worse option than either of them around for opening day. The problem of course is that the Jets are really going with a big decision by committee approach in John Idzik's first year and there probably is not a strong enough consensus in the organization for them to release Sanchez at this point. All it takes is Rex Ryan being strongly opposed to the move and the Jets are kind of hamstrung in their ability to move on - even though that is now long overdue.
The point of the poll was to decide how important continuing the competition was compared to choosing a starter and giving him the max reps heading into week one. The clock is ticking.....MM wanted this settled 'sooner rather than later' just for this reason. If Geno's throwing ankle is up to the task AND he's still in serious contention for the job, then go ahead and play him week 3. But if it's a fore gone conclusion that Mark's the man then just end it now and give Mark and his starting offense the max practice as a complete unit. The decision is above my pay grade!
