No clear answer to the question as often the two go hand in hand. First off your Brees argument holds no water, teams only been under .500 2 times in his 7 years and 3 times over 11 wins. Meanwhile Flacco has never had a season where's he's thrown more than 12 picks, and only 1 season where he's thrown fewer than 20 TD's. Flacco Isn't a top 5 QB, top 10 yes. Flacco is an example of the type of QB who compliments a Defensive based team, he takes care of the ball and puts enough points on the board to lighten the burden on the defense. However, put Brees with a Defense like the Ravens, or the Jets of '09, '10, and you get a team that likely goes unbeaten. The greatest QB can't win if the rest of the team is bottom of the duff, but a bottom of the duff QB can win if the rest of the team around him is top 10, he just has to not fuck up much. The simple answer is no, an elite QB does not guarantee a playoff birth. If you have a crap defense and a crap running game it's hard to make the playoffs regardless of who you have at QB. Once every decade or two a Trent Dilfer will slip in to the by taking care of the ball and riding an elite defense and running game. But there's a reason elite QB's are paid more than any other player, an Elite QB can take a so so team and turn it in to a contender, a QB who doesn't take care of the ball can take an otherwise contender and make it an also ran. There is one truth, win's and losses are team stats. Just like in baseball a pitcher can have a 1.27 ERA, but if the defense behind him is giving up 2-3 un earned runs a game he ain't gonna win. Give me a Peyton Manning any day of the week coupled with a good to great defense...
Never said it was, I was a Sanchez supporter after 2011. But using Juncs logic we should focus on wins and losses and we were 8-8. How is that a good season?
For someone that is a context connoisseur as yourself you sure is missing the context in this one. RG3 was playing with a messed up knee he shouldn't have even been out there. Like I said you'll literally say anything to prop up your boy.
so what? mark was playing hurt late in the 2009 and 2010 season. He missed a game b/c of a knee issue in 2009. I love what Griffin did, he has a chance to be special but it's about WINNING.
What they forget with that argument is that Sanchez with his lack of ball control severly limits the Jets ability to make the playoffs. He almost blew the 2009 season, and he played absolutely horribly in the last 1/4 of the 2010 season. It's nice to win in the playoffs, but you gotta get there first.
he didn't almost blow the 2009 season. he had a rough 2-3 game stretch in 2010 where we went 1-2 and the 2nd loss Holmes dropped a wide open TD that was the difference in the game.
The poll question in how it is phrased is a little grey. Both matter. If we are looking at a RB, an Olineman, or a defensive player as example: we assess them based on how their individual efforts, and sometimes just presence on the field, contributes to the teams chances to win. We don't simply compare Super Bowl rings between players of those positions. I understand QB is the most important position on the team, but it really should be the same standard of assessment in my opinion. So essentially i look at the individual within the results of the team, which probably doesn't answer the poll. I chose individual, as this was the closest thing to my opinion, although not 100% accurate.
Marks injury was not as severe as RG3's. Once again propping up your boy. The Jets almost became the first team to miss the playoffs with the number 1 defense and number 1 rushing offense thanks to Mark. He was dreadful that season, he was just cut some slack because he was a rookie.
Not even close. Team accomplishments, because while the QB gets the lions share of attention, the simple truth is hes the biggest cog, in a larger machine. I think you will see that this year. Sanchez, will light it up. In that scoring drive he pulled the team out of holes 3 times with plays of over 20 yards, including the strike to cumberland. I already predicted he would have a career year, but admittedly, thats not saying alot. He will be close to, if not, a top 10 QB, in this offense.
No, you will do anything to knock Sanchez. If RGIII shouldnt have been on the field that is shit coaching. What Jets QB ever scored more TDs, tnan Sanchez under SCHITTY. heck, what QB ever? In Bradfords career year, he went plus 8, scoring 21 TDs. Sanchez put up 32 under Schotty, 9 more the Favre did, and went plus 6. Context is your friend.
It's tough -- a QB plays decent and the team wins the press will say team wins in spite of so so QB. QB plays amazing and the team loses and the QB isn't clutch or can't come up big in big situations. For Sanchez the team seems to like the guy, lineman like blocking for him, and no one has really said he is anything but a good teammate. This year if Sanchez wants to keep his job he has to take a step with a legit OC behind him. He has to complete over 60% and have a 2:1 TD:TO margin as a worse case scenario. He needs to be put in situations to succeed - running back must be a weapon catching the ball and the running game has to be better than last year. Team has some spots in the schedule to win some game and be competitive so if they can get out of September at 500 and Sanchez is playing decent it will be his job for at least 4 more weeks.
The guy turned it over way too much. But he put up 32 scores. If Teblow doesnt go 90 plus yards, its 9-7, and say what you will, the defense took the field with a lead at the end of that game regardless of how the scoring went.
Help me put this in context. How come he has a new OC and QBC and still threw for his usual 56% throughout TC? Why did he throw a pick 6 to DL in his first preseason drive?
The Tebow game hurts, but losing to the Raiders earlier that year really showed me that this team wasn't going to make the playoffs. EVERYONE was turning the football over - we couldn't tackle, we had no poise. Eagles game, let's not even get into that debacle. Those games to me hurt just as much as Tebow. We turned the football over at an alarming rate as a TEAM. btw fuck this poll. You can't choose one or the other, I do agree with that Hobbes.
These hypotheticals are not realistic. It's highly unlikely that you are going to find a team that has both an elite top 5 QB and a great defense. With a hard salary cap you have to choose where to make the big investments. Great QBs, like Brday, Manning and Brees, are rare commodities. You can't just go pick one up at your local Walmart. If you have one, that's great. If not, you try to get you one all the while still trying to win in whatever way possible (i.e., strong run game, defense, special teams...etc.). The overwhelming attention that is paid to our failure to secure an elite QB too often overshadows the success we've been able to have without one. Since Rex, we have probably been one of the most successful teams outside of the top tier teams with elite QBs.
I give Sanchez credit when it's due. There has hardly been much to give Sanchez credit for throughout his career. You love propping up that 32 score season but he had 26 ints. He was turning the ball over while hardly making any big plays. He was mostly crap that year. Well lets see what Bradford does this year.
I am discussing facts, you are trying to use excuses. Mark did not hold us back in 2009, the D and STs blew just as many games as he and the O did. You know in 2010 the great Philip Rivers had the #1 offense and SD had the #1 defense yet he couldn't get them to the playoffs?
