It's not blind faith at all, I wouldn't back someone unless I believed they can do the job. I will root for whoever is our QB and if geno proves to me we can win big w/ him I will defend him just as much in 2 years when the rest of the board wants another new QB. But they didn't, let's look at the wins and losses: Hou: D was outstanding, O was very good. NE: D was outstanding, O was good Ten: D was decent, O was decent, STs were good NO: loss is on Mark Mia: loss is on D Buf: loss is on Mark Oak: team domination Mia: STs blew this one Jax: loss is on D NE: team loss Car: D led Buf: D led TB: D led Atl: equal blame to O and D, low scoring weather game where D was great until the end when they blew it. Ind: D kept us in it until backups came in Cin: team domination so just 2 losses were primarily on Mark. I agree he was carried at times by a good ground game and D but in postseason he was excellent, he was not being carried by anyone. he was a big reason we won 2 playoff games(Not THE reason but a big one). Clearly he was never as consistent as we wanted, even in his good years. That was always the best step until last year when the bottom fell out. all we need to know is: 4 years as starter winning record 2 playoff apps 4 playoff wins(franchise record) 2 div rd wins(only QB in Jets history w/ 2) 2 title game apps(only QB in jets history w/ 2) 4 road playoff wins(at time was record, now he is 3rd all time)
My point was there's really no reason to rush Geno into it. All those asking for him to be the week one starter are part of what's wrong with this franchise. I really think everyone should take a look at what the Niners did last season, It seemed to work out for all parties involved. If Geno can't clearly beat out Sanchez who has regressed since his rookie year according some here why does he need to be thrown into the fire? Let him sit and learn how to be a QB in the NFL. TL;DR: Geno is Sanchez' Kaepernik. A. Smith is now a starting QB in KC.
If Geno shows he is capable of starting week 1 he'll be the starter. Mark's chance to save his carer here will come if Geno is not ready and he takes off while waiting for that to happen which would be the best case scenario for the franchise.
I'm going to see if my wife has any pretty headbands laying around - maybe I'll wear it tailgating.. It wouldn't be girly- it's supporting our (backup?) QB. Next Sanchez will be fraying the ends of his jersey. Maybe he'll stop wearing socks so it will look like he's wearing capri pants. Are you allowed to wear flip flops instead of spikes in the NFL?
I read your post and my response is what I said. You're afraid that if the Jets start Geno that his career will mirror Sanchez as a guy they threw in the fire from day 1. If Geno proves himself in TC (so far so good) and preseason then he should start.
I bolded the part that you should have paid more attention to the second time reading. I'll put in caps this time. IF GENO CAN'T CLEARLY BEAT OUT SANCHEZ ( who has regressed since his rookie year, when he wasn't nearly ready to be in the league ) I'm afraid if they start Geno before he's ready his career will mirror Sanchez'. How can you say Geno is ready to start if he can't clearly be better then a regressed, terrible Sanchez?
I read your bold part and this is what you are not getting. The Jets want to move on from Sanchez. So all Geno needs to do is prove that he is capable enough to start. Btw Sanchez is the one that needs to "clearly" outplay Geno. Not the other way around.
If Geno isn't ready to play he shouldn't start. That doesn't mean he has to clearly beat out Sanchez to start. You have it backwards. Sanchez needs to clearly beat out Geno to start
You're not understanding, The Jets CANNOT move on from Sanchez this year. The Contract dictates that. The Jets are not in win now mode. If Geno doesn't show that he's clearly ready to lead an NFL team you don't put him out there cause the NY media will eat him up just to prove that they were right about him not being a franchise QB. If the talent level / competition is even close, the smart thing for the franchise to do is give Sanchez a shot to redeem his value at the beginning of this year so we can offload him for draft picks next season rather then cut him freely. I'm sorry the hate of Sanchez around here blinds people to these FACTS.
Everybody knows the Jets can't unload Sanchez this year. But it doesn't mean they have to play him if there is a better option on the team. Sanchez is only here because of his contract. After this season they'll probably try and trade him, if no one bites then he'll be released and his cap hit won't be as bad. The Jets are in rebuild mode so you might as well see what you have in Geno this year. If he doesn't show enough this year the Jets have the option to wait it out for a few years or draft a QB next year. Sanchez will not be on the team next season so you might as well play the rookie and let him get his experience. Obviously if Geno isn't ready then Sanchez should start. But so far Geno according to reports have been outplaying Sanchez.
You can see what Geno has this year without starting him. Like i said, Everyone needs to take a real close look at what the Niners did with Kaepernick. They eased him into the Pistol role while still allowing him to throw the ball and get in game experience without much pressure. No reason we can't do the same thing with Sanchez / Geno. If we give Sanchez the start and he stinks it up, We put Geno in mid way through the season and he's the savior, Regardless of how he plays. If we put Sanchez in and he tears it up ( far fetched as it may seem ) The franchise is in a great place to trade him for value and Draft another QB to compete with Geno. If we start Geno right away and he flounders there's a chance he will not be able to deal with the scrutiny. All rookie QBs don't need to start right away, And if there's a valid reason, and no obvious advantage to him playing he should hold the board and learn from Sanchez' mistakes. Another obvious advantage can be seen in our schedule. 2nd half of the season he'd start by playing CIN, NO, BUF, MIAx2, OAK, CAR. That's a significantly easier schedule then he would face at the beginning stretch of the season. - TB ( w revis ), NEx2, ATL, PIT.
Honestly, I feel if Geno can show he won't turn the ball over, we should put him out there, regardless of all other stats. Turnovers are huge in football, it's not like basketball where it may cost you 2 points then you get it right back. Turnovers change momentum and put extra pressure on the defense. They win and lose games. You can't win games when you average 3+ turnovers per game, even with the best defense in NFL history. I'd rather punt nonstop and let our D take care of business, than constantly screw the defense over with TOs. Our D is good enough that we don't need to have a stellar offense to win games. We just need to limit turnovers. The amount of turnovers over the past 2 season is unacceptable. Cut them in half and we make playoffs both years. I don't care if we waste 8 million on Sanchez, it's better than simply playing him to redeem himself and watching him hand games away again. I hope Rex is taking picks and fumbles VERY seriously this year.
Same could be said about sacks to a lesser degree, Which Geno has been prone to in camp so far ( without getting the snot knocked out of him every time he slips up there ). Wait till they start really lighting him up on the "Sacks" and his helmet gets turned sideways, we'll see how well he holds onto the ball and if he starts throwing the ball where he shouldn't. If there are any flaws at all that can be worked out in time we should do that while we have the time and opportunity to do so. No reason to rush him into being ready to replace a QB that we're paying 8mil and plays at a similar level. Let Geno grow naturally, Pump up Sanchez for trade bait. Only hate of Sanchez can deny this,.. Gotta look at the bigger picture.
I have to laugh every time I see someone thinking Sanchez is somehow going to become trade bait. He would have to play lights out to become trade bait in which case the Jets should try to sign him instead of trading him. It's extremely unlikely that he becomes trade bait. Sanchez lovers can dream though.
No one is trading for Mark, someone may trade for geno though which is why the best case scenario would be for Mark to take off and earn his job back long term and in a year or 2 we could trade Geno.
Honestly if Kaepernick was ready in 2011 he would have started. The 49ers coaches evaluated him and saw that he wasn't ready yet, so they went with Alex Smith. They utilized Kaepernick's ability to use his legs as a change of pace to Smith. The 49ers knew Kaepernick was the future Smith's injury sped up the process. However the Jets situation is different. The coaches have evaluated Geno and have been impressed with how he's progressed as far as his footwork, WCO terminology, standing under center etc. Based on all that the coaches feel that Geno is ready enough to compete for the starting job. If the coaches thought he needed more time then Sanchez would be the guy that we'd be hearing is the favorite to start by now. If the Jets start Geno and he flounders then good we have a vet QB that can step in when necessary. That is all apart of Geno's learning experience. If Geno needs to be pulled that will show Geno that his job isn't safe and mistakes and terrible play will not be tolerated. After that its about how Geno handles it. He could handle it like Eli did after getting pulled for Warner in that Ravens game. By learning from it and going on to becoming a good NFL QB or he can be a bitch about it. Based on what I've seen from Geno he looks like a guy that works hard and wants to get better. Maybe if the Jets had made Sanchez accountable for his mistakes early on he'd probably be a better QB today.
We gave up a 4th and a 6th for Tebow. Sanchez > Tebow. If he can show he has command of a WCO and plays event decent this year, Someone will trade for him. I'm sure there are plenty of coaches and personel departments that can see the same mistakes we did in his development. He's only 26 years old and is a gifted athlete. Most QBs don't even get their shot until they're that old.
