I'm not so sure. I mean "help compensate" is kind of vague. The schemes that Westy used were so good a placing the right players in the right lanes, gaps, etc.

I'm not sure that we will ever see that kind of forethought by a replacement coach.

Here's hoping to be proven wrong. I think STs may cost us a game or two this year that they shouldn't.

it is nice to have it be a feel good story for once. no bullshit drama, no bravado, no positions being handed to people. if there were more people who could give an honest opinion there it would be great.

i am not completely sold on the defense at this point, lots of potential but i want to see guys like coples and davis and wilson do something significant before i anoint them. i also am worried about cromartie being his old self after a year, about harris being a step slower and the olb position.

on offense everything is a question mark right now... all we can be is hopeful at this point.

specials i expect a big step back, there is little chance the new kid even though he worked under westy can manage to do the things westhoff did. we will see if he can ask for and get the regulars to play specials. that was one thing westhoff did, he got guys who wouldnt normally play specials to play and to really play them hard and well.

but man it sure is nice to get some good news out of camp.

Has anyone heard any news on Ivory? Really would like to know how he's doing and if he practiced today.

Last year's ST wasn't exactly stellar. It was pretty horrible even for a normal standard. [Kickoff fumble returned for TD - shit like that happened with last year's ST.] So, if Kotwica happens to be half the ST coach that Westy was, there isn't much to lose. [Or that is my reasoning thus far.]

    Yeah... I know.

Funny thing, Westy already knew he was retiring. What makes you think the fall-off want Westhoff trying to give Kotwica a clue?

Rex had his scheme and handed it over to Pettine for a couple of seasons and it was a ghost of what it was under Rex.

Do you really think that Westy kept this guy out of the decision making? Knowing he was about to retire?

Actually, now that you mentioned it - it is a legitimate concern. Last year could have been the transition year [which explains the dismal performance from the ST.] Jets have a reason to worry, it seems. I agree.

Disagree, Westy and Kotwica worked closely together for some years and am 99% sure Westy will be in some kind of capacity, 'available' to him (Kotwica)

The other thing is that Westy was one of the best, if not the best ever STs coach in the NFL, so anyone coming in isn't going to be as good.

I too hope that STs doesn't miss him too much

Maybe they should start saying the Big Top in the Big Apple, just so we get our proper recognition.

What's funny is all these Jets bashing bozos haven't got a clue, and they're the ones who are clowns.

I think a lot of that was a reflection of exactly how talent deficient last years roster was. When Westhoff can't make it work there's probably a big problem.

I doubt Westhoff just suddenly forgot how to coach special teams.

    this.

we were picking guys up off the street to start for us some weeks, so i can only imagine how little time if any westy had to work with these guys.

i expect if we can stay healthy special teams will fare better than last year just based on coherence alone. its gonna take some getting used to not relying on a big special teams play to bring us back in a game...

We got many more years out of him than we were supposed to. I hope people appreciated him and don't just remember the disaster of last year.

STs are about more than just the return game but:

    1960-2000 w/o Westhoff(41 seasons, 620 games):

    KR TDs scored 10
    KR TDs allowed 15
    -5

    PR TDs scored 14
    PR TDs allowed 16
    -2

    total return TDs scored: 24
    total return TDs allowed: 31
    Overall: -7

In 620 games we had 24 TD returns, 1 every 26 games

    2001-2012 w/ Westhoff(13 seasons, 208 games):

    KR TDs scored 16
    KR TDs allowed 6
    +10

    PR TDs scored 3
    PR TDs allowed 3
    even

    total return TDs scored: 19
    total return TDs allowed: 9
    Overall: +10

In 208 games we had 19 TD returns, 1 every 11 games

Oh definitely. I thought we'd lost him years back and have looked at all the subsequent years as being a gift.

Wouldn't be too surprised to see Wilson take the other spot if the others don't step up

Haven't read too much about them tbh.
