"I was thinking a different play in my head, (so it was) just a mental error there. So as soon as I realized there was nobody to hand it to I started to run toward the line and tried to cover it up and just get down"

"I was thinking of a different play" could just as easily mean I was thinking of the right play, And the RB wasn't there as it could mean that he forgot the play.

Tough call but there's the link for you, I'm still leaning towards Sanchez covering up for someone else botching the initial play call.

Just freeze the clip, at 4 seconds. What does the blocking tell you?

Remember, the LOS is the 31 yard line. Moore's ass is at the 31½...

There ain't a player "7 yards" downfield...that would be the 38 yrd. line.

After watching this again I'm almost positive that Greene ran the wrong play here.

Sanchez see's hilliard coming and holds the ball back, Hilliard then smashes into the first LB at the line, leaving what would be a GIANT hole into the 2nd level. Once Sanchez realizes Greene is not behind Hilliard he tries to get anything out of the play by scrambling forward. Everyone on the line is run blocking including BOTH TE's ( Keller on left Cumberland on the right ). Everything about this play screams run up the middle. Greene's the only one thinking sweep here.

I am inclined to say the same thing.

Blockers all sealed the defenders off the right side B-gap, with a lead blocker running ahead with full steam. All that is missing in that picture is a RB busting through the gap. And Greene flashed to the left - and took himself out of the play (there was an OLB keying on him there.) Sanchez fails at busting through B-gap, but he's actually the kind of a leader you might want, [in terms of the leadership quality, not in terms of play quality] who doesn't throw his teammate under the bus, and instead takes the blame squarely on his shoulders. [Remember "I'm trying to be a good teammate here, Ok? Let's just say the protection wasn't very good today." bullshit?]

Sanchez turned out left instead of right and missed the hand off to Hilliard. After Hilliard is past him Sanchez is holding the ball out and immediately starts to run where Hilliard was supposed to go.

If this is all just Sanchez covering for Greene then we have some really crappy players and coaches since not one of them has come out to back up that theory.

    LOL. And,

-He got extra hammered because they gave him nothing but cheap hootch to work with. I mean, Schlliens Whiskey?

Mark forgot the play and screwed up; it's over with. No need to chew our steak twice rehashing that fiasco.

Ok. 5 yards down field, though thats nit pocking, Mangold,The FB,and the LG, are still blocking after Sanchez coghs it up. Greene is the only player in those photos, that thinks its a screen pass.

Look at Greene in the first photo, look at the blocking in the third.

    Greene blew the call.

That doesnt absolve Sanchez for giving the ball away, but damn, at least people shouldnt use him manning up for a teamate as a brickbat,

Sanchez does not turn out left. Hes facing right. And pulls the ball because he is expecting Greene to be behind the FB. He had the ball out to the right, and the FB runs right past him, and HIS HANDS NEVER TAKE A RECIEVING position. The you tube is a page or two back.
, the fullback never reaches for the ball, he charges into the hole, and clearly is blocking on a designed 2 on 3 see photo 3 above.

Look at the photos Acad posted.

Mangold, the FB, and the LG, in a 3 on 2 straight up run block, Greene running a screen route.

If you cant see that, there isnt much more to be said.

Greene was thinking screen, but otherwise thats exactly right.

The worst part of it os, if Greene hits the hole, and the FBs outside shoulder, see pic 2, hes in a footrace to tje end zone with a db.

I was thinking it was "Tackle Over - Fake HB Flip" circa Madden 2013. Except the play that was actually called was HB Iso.

    ( page 378 - Jets JUMBO )
Which he most likely would have lost, cause it's Shonn Greene,.. Anyone else to see Ivory and Goodson this year haha?

Hobbes, truth be told, I was only playfully trolling by blithely saying in effect: "look we all know Sanchez screwed up, can't we just move on?" nothing more, nothing less. I mean, this thread's pretty much every one spinning their wheels at this point.

Are you watching the same play? Sanchez doesn't turn out left?

We are veiwing the play from the right side, so I'm not sure how you think it is possible to see his back like that if he didn't turn out left. Also not sure why Rex would say he turned out the wrong way.

The FB's hands never take a receiving position?

Why is his arms in a position that is shaped like a "C" then? He is either trying to make it look like he is getting the handoff, or he really was supposed to get the ball. Based on the comments of the players that say he was supposed to get the ball, I'll go with that.

I don't doubt that Sanchez is expecting Greene to be behind the FB. Sanchez admitted that he was thinking of a different play. Why would the FB fake a handoff if the RB was supposed to follow right behind him? Greene said the ball was supposed to go to the FB... Mark himself said the ball was supposed to go to the FB... Rex talked to his assistant coaches and said it was a mental mistake and a mistake on the handoff by Sanchez.

If it wasn't Mark's fault and he is just making all of it up to cover for Greene why would the other players and coaches just go along with it and make the leader of your team look like a clown? All to cover for a RB that the team wasn't going to resign at the end of the year? Yeah that makes perfect sense.

I have a much simpler explanation that lines up with the video. Mark screwed up! He is telling the truth! Greene is telling the truth! Rex is telling the truth! But don't let common sense stop you from looking at pictures and videos and coming up with your own conspiracy theory.

Bahaha. Sanchez's defenders are now at the point where direct quotes from multiple players AND the Head Coach are being called "cover-ups"?

The irrationality, regarding Sanchez, exhibited by a couple of posters here, is on the verge of reaching Tebowish proportions.

    Seriously, this is UNreal.

Careful Testaverde....you may have to go live in a Russian airport.

You have to give it to Hobbes...not only was the worst play in Jets history NOT Sanchez's fault, he's actually a hero, as he took the heat for the player that should be blamed.

    Now that's "spin".

Out of curiosity does anyone have the link to the full interview? I don't remember Sanchez explicitly saying the play was supposed to go to Hilliard. Also don't remember any other direct quotes from players that totally placed the blamed on Sanchez. I've already brought up that I really don't think Rex has a great idea of what plays are being called or what was supposed to be run at any one point.
I think the biggest thing for the team was to move on, Not try and figure out exactly who was to blame just give the media answers and move on from what was one of the most embarrassing games in recent memory ( even before the butt fumble, as there were 14 other points scored in the <5 mins surrounding that play and were just getting handled )

Regardless of all this I think we can agree that people fucked up this play. Not "person". I think a lot of people have a hard time distinguishing between Jets Fans and Sanchez Defenders. While the guy wears Green and White I'm going to back him up. And while i'll admit theres a good chance this was on him, and he did just run the "wrong" play in his head.. He still was a complete professional and never even tried to deflect the blame.

It really was just a bad play that got worse as it went. That 3 seconds of "football" should not make or break someone's career. The same way you can't take stats from 6 playoff games and say someone is a successful QB.

It sucked, Sanchez took the blame and moved on, It's not his fault that ESPN fans, media and NFL would rather not. If Sanchez has a bounce back year ( Which I think he can ) this will be something we all look back at and laugh.

 I do!.....Not live in a Russian airport but give it up to Hobbes. :) I love His optimism and his zeal for Sanchez. It is just so ridiculous and comical.

I posted the link a few posts up. Sanchez was asked point blank who the ball was supposed to go to and he said the fullback. There is another article where Greene said the ball was supposed to go to the FB. I'm not sure how you can blame anyone else other than Sanchez just by watching the play. If you go by the quotes of the players and Rex and watch the play it is pretty clear who was at fault.

On a play of that magnitude that makes the QB look really bad, the Jets would have done everything to get it out there that it wasn't Mark's fault if that indeed was the case. Instead they come out and back up what Sanchez admitted. That he forgot the play and was thinking of a different one in his head. It is pretty simple stuff.
