it's a big deal to lose home playoff games especially w/ a bye. Upsets happen and no team will win them all but to have a losing record, to have so many one and dones and so many home playoff losses is not a good thing. Peyton is 6-5 in home playoff games Montana 10-2 Brady 11-3 That is a HUGE difference
Having the most playoff wins in franchise history make them special, being the only QB in franchise history to play in 2 title games makes it special. You guys act like we are the Yankees an have a million championships to choose from, we don't. Getting close is all we have for anyone not old enough to see SB III and no QB got us closer than Mark sanchez. I feel bad that you guys couldn't enjoy those times and it's not easy to win in postseason as we have seen w/ a much better QB in peyton that has played on much better teams.
I don't ignore the last 2, I have said a million times he was horrible last year and ended 2011 horribly. I have said a million times I don't know if he can ever recapture 2010 here in NY. My point all along has been I don't want to give up on him yet and he deserves a chance to try to earn his job back. I really don't see why this is a big deal but everything I say on here is a big deal to some folks for some reason.
Of course I enjoyed those two runs. Unfortunately Sanchez wasn't/isn't good enough to sustain that type of success. Sustainable winning begins with the quarterback.
He's getting that opportunity. I don't think there's anyone internally at Florham Park who believes Sanchez is the answer long term.
Yes I realize that. I've conceded that Manning isn't better than Brady or MOntana. Actually like I've said I agree with you. What should impress you the most is the amount of home playoff games those three qbs have had.
you should specify peyton manning. because eli manning winning 2 championships does not make him an elite qb, he had 25 ints that one year and missed the playoffs a couple years too. sooooooo the playoff wins matter when we choose for htem to matter, otherwise they dont matter. but they dont matter for favre or namath either. but stats are fantasy stats, unless they fit his position then they can and will be used. but not when the qb rates as low as sancho in completion percentage at or behind hte los. those are FANTASY stats. 1 bad year, but it was the rest of the teams fault. 4 playoff wins, 2 vaunted afc divisional round playoff championships. on a side note hobbes should be around any time now to tell us it was all brian schottenheimers fault. 2 guys have double handedly made this thread thousands of posts longer than it should have been.
You skip past all that and sum it up like this, his decision making with the football has was atrocious last year and has been suspect his 4 years in the league. That poor decision making plus poor consistency leads to random fluctuating play and not knowing what you are going to get from Sanchez from throw to throw. Not really. Clutch throws you could usually lean on Sanchez for in 2010, but since then he's been quite terrible when the Jets have needed a throw or a play. Not a perfect stat for a flawed discussion, but Romo had 5 fourth quarter comebacks and 5 game winning drives last year, Sanchez has had 5 of each in his last 2 years combined. Hobbes is learning. Once people realize winning and losing is a team stat, the QB discussion starts to become more about the QB which is the key.
Playoff wins are so misleading to judge a QB on. First, well, wins are a team stat. Second, it leads to silly hypothesis like Flacco is equal or better than Aaron Rodgers at the QB position. Or Eli is better than Rodgers. Or Sanchez is better than Matt Ryan. You take these 5-6 careers of QBs, then narrow it down to a 5-10 game sample size depending on QB, then judge the team stat of wins and losses. Best bet to figuring out QB play is to look at QB play. But that requires looking at game stats for comp %, yards, TDs, INTs, INT%, TD%, etc etc. It's just much easier to say this QB has so and so playoff wins, this QB has this many, watch this QB faece this QB on Sunday even though they'll never step on the field at the same time except for pre game chatter and the post game handshake.
And you brush off our two deep playoff runs, something 95% of Jet fans have never seen before in their lifetime. A life time of frustration, disappointments, heartbreak and broken belongings around the house. The last two years have been more of the same as we Jets fans have become accustomed to. Most on this board thought we had turned the corner, sadly this franchise has yet again neglected certain positions. Fans look to blame and that's their right as customers. To blame Mark Sanchez, who shoulders his fair share of the blame via poor play, but let the organization off is criminal. Give him some fucking weapons and we are instantly a playoff team, I guarantee it.
That's always a pet peeve of mine. NBC, for example, hypes the shit out of the Denver/New England matchup as if Brady and Manning are going to throw 7 on 7s all day. Nope, they play against the other team's defense, but that's not nearly as exciting
The problem with your first comment about how most Jets fans haven't seen that type of success... We don't play against our team's history, we play against the rest of the league. Yeah Sanchez has the most road playoff wins, but he hasn't played at a level to get us to the playoffs. Those 4 playoff wins haven't helped him. I appreciated those two runs the Jets went on, but Sanchez and the team surrouding him ism uch different than 09 and 10. Yeah but it's how you get people to watch. The QBs are the stars of the league unless you are ridiculous at your position that year like Watt or AP last year. Otherwise, it's QB, QB, QB.
You know Eli has missed 3 of the last 4 postseasons, right? Ben 2 of the last 4 Rivers 3 of the last 4 Romo 3 of the last 4 could they sustain? and all those teams had MUCH more talent around the QB. That's ok, if they decide he's not the answer I trust the evaluation of trained professionals much more than Jet fans. Most top QBs get a lot of home playoff games. We can compare Peyton's 6-5 record to others: Troy Aikman 7-1 Terry Bradshaw 8-2 Dan Marino 7-3 Jim Kelly 8-1 John Elway 11-2 let's compare to all modern HOFers(what the HOF calls modern) George Blanda 8-3 Len Dawson 1-0 Dan Fouts 1-2 Graham 8-1 Bob Griese 4-0 Sonny Jurgensen 1-0 Bobby Layne 3-0 Warren Moon 2-3 Joe Namath 1-1 I think the postseason records at home effectively group these HOFers To be elite you need to be great in the reg season too, you can't just have a few good postseason games or we'd call Mark Sanchez elite based on his 2009 & 2010 postseasons. When a QB has SB caliber talent around him his entire career and is 9-11 in postseason that tells us something. We can excuse games here or there but he's led his high powered Os to less than 15 PPG in playoff losses. Let's compare that to playoff losses of other top QBs of this era: Aaron Rodgers 29.6 PPG Ben Roethlisberger 26 PPG Drew Brees 24.8 PPG Tom Brady 17 PPG It would be one thing if peyton was doing all he can to help his team win but he's folding w/ each loss. In postseason the teams are usually fairly close, the difference is usually the play at QB so postseason performance tells us an awful lot. MUCH more than beating the Jaguars 2 times a year and playing 8+ games in domes every year. Starr Staubach Tarkenton Tittle Van Brocklin Waterfield Young
Our expectations are a direct result of our teams history. Maybe the success we had in 09 and 10 elevated these expectations, I sure know I have been very disappointed these past two seasons (specifically the lack of a playmaker or mauling lineman). People on this board give waaay to much credit to Mark Sanchez for the playoff runs and waaay to much blame for the debacles of 11 and 12. We all need to understand that he is one part of the team (the team starts with Woody and the Gm) albeit a very important part. Mark has to play better, I fear he won't this year as the FO yet again fail thus far to bring in some real options (cap strapped from other bad decisions). This team is in true transition mode that's for sure
I agree Junc. But don't you think he is once again put in a position to fail? I like the additions at tailback, but with Holmes most likely starting on the PUP and no other real talent at WR/TE and his confidence being shot..he'll never really get that chance..
Holmes is expected to start camp on the PUP list, I would expect he'll be ready to go week 1 but we'll see. Basically he is in a position to fail but if relatively healthy we should have much better weapons than a year ago when Holmes, keller, Hill were all banged up. I think our run game will be much better which should help, I expect hill to take a step forward, I like Kerley, Cumberland has a year of playing experience and we'll see what Winslow can do plus the OC change should help. He'll have a chance to succeed, he doesn't need to be Brady or Rodgers he just needs to give us a chance to win. Limit TOs and make good decisions which he didn't do last year.
We will have to wait and see a out Holmes, I doubt he shows anything before week 6 at best, but that's just speculation on my part (based on the fact that he is a self centered malcontent, who has taken plays off in the past). How do you think Mark will have much better weapons than last year? I don't see a one legged Holmes, Hill, JK, and Cumby/Winslow as a huge upgrade if any. I do agree with the running backs and OC improvements. My prediction is you see defenses stack the box and dare Mark to beat them. Beat them with a bunch of receivers that can beat press coverage (I hope Hill really worked on this on the offseason), and can seem to run the correct routs (again I hope MM gets the best out of each guy). Mark Sanchez is set up to fail in NY
