I like Rex, but there's zero point to extending him long-term at this point. He's not a lame duck coach. If he were entering the last year of his contract, I absolutely would agree, extend him a year. But he's not. Let him earn it. Doesn't mean we need 10 wins, just to show improvement. Rex has had solid success for a guy with no quarterback. That probably won't change this season. However, if the bottom falls out, and the Jets are a joke this year, you don't want to have extended him for no reason. That's what got the Jets in trouble with Sanchez, though there is obviously no salary cap.
Rex should be allowed all the time he needs to grow into the position of Head Coach. Given that this team hasn't either appeared nor won a SB in the last 45 years shouldn't matter at all. As the saying goes: that was then and we were so close back in '09 and'10. There's no real urgency surrounding this team so why not let Rex continue to learn how to be a successful HC. It will take as long as it takes. I won't live long enough to see it but perhaps those of you born after 1995 might. Just look to the Detroit Lions or the Chicago Cubs for examples of an even worse Championship drought than ours. If you keep in mind that winning the SB isn't the goal but simply the cherry on top a playoff run, it will make you feel a lot better. Anything else and you run the risk of being a SOJF or even worse yet, a Darksider. Give Rex a open ended contract and let the good times roll.
He's done nothing in the last 3 seasons to warrant an extension. Let him coach for his job. You tend to see the best out of someone when their backs are against the wall.
THIS IS A JOKE, RIGHT? Extend Rex Ryan's contract NOW????? That would make about as much sense as guaranteeing Mark Sanchez for 2 seasons after he royally sucked the previous season (oh that's right, we did that). Didn't you watch/read anything about Rex and his jets last year. While Sanchez led the league in turnovers AGAIN Rex kept chirping "Mark gives us the best chance to win!" ESPN still runs Sanchez and his embarrassing butt fumble every night and people still are laughing at Rex 's main man Sanchez. Any coach who stuck with butt fumble that long shouldn't even have his job this year, much less get an extension! He constantly plays overpaid vets like Eric Smith, Bryan Thomas, and Bart Scott while he benches much more talented younger players. Make Rex prove himself at least this year and probably in 2014 before you extend his contract. Or maybe Sanchez can loan him part of that $8M that Tanny FOOLISHLY guaranteed Sanchez before the 2011 season. "Phenomenal motivator?" HA! Looks like Rex hasn't motivated his $8M QB who, of course, "gives us the best chance to win."
What happened for 45 years should have nothing to do with what this team does. Obviously the Super Bowl is the goal, but is the best option firing your head coach every 3 years if he doesn't win? That's what franchises like the Lions do.
I was born early enough in the 20th century to have seen a Jets Super Bowl win. I won't live long enough to see the next one. That being said, With our present ownership and FO in place, I would like to think someone knows how to drive this train. Being a Darksider, I will always have my doubts until this team actually WINS something besides the headlines. Rex Ryan is perhaps, second to Belichek, the brightest defensive mind in professional football today bar none. Unfortunately, that's where the platitudes should stop. He is offense challenged and that probably will not change as I believe people are hardwired to excel at things, and not be that good at other things. If Woody Johnson is more concerned about the body count on game day rather than immediate results, then maybe Rex walks the plank. Idzik so far is re-contructing the Jets FO. Stocking it with His guys. It's only a matter of time before Rex comes up for evaluation. While they won't "release" Rex during this upcoming season, his chances of staying past 2014 depends on the W/L count pure and simple. He wins, he stays. Can't get simpler than that.
Repeating the same thing expecting a different result is the definition of insanity no? Rex has shown that he is a great mind when it comes to defense. His acumen comes into question when it involves the other facets of the game. Rex's defense will keep you in the game. Rex's offense will eventually lose it for you. Rex's quotes will keep you relevant but perhaps for the wrong reasons. At some point, the decision has to be made by Idzik if Rex can ever be successful at being more than just a glorified DC. If Woody doesn't mind a really long learning curve, and all the nonsense that comes with Rex, then yeah, give Rexy the open ended contract and pass the popcorn. Maybe Buddy Ryan isn't a roadmap into Rex's future.
great d.c. but maybe he can't be a h.c. they were saying the same thing about the hoodie before brady came along. just sayin
The only way Rex doesn't get an extension is if the team tanks. I personally love Rex and would hate to see him go.
That's exactly right. Perhaps Rex one day will have the same success Belichek has. Just remember how many years it took for Belichek to finally become successful and if it was for Tom Brady, most think he would have been fired in NE. Not that I'm trying to compare Sanchez or Smith to Brady, but Brady saved Belichek's career in NE. Again, w/o a championship in the modern NFL era, there's really no hurry as this team, on whole, isn't close to a SB run. Why not give Rex the same amount of time that Cowher had, that Dan Reeves had, to learn how to be a HC. What's another 10-15 years considering we're already 0 for 45.
I love Rex as a coach and hope that he coaches his ass off this year to get this team to a more respectable level. I'am not expecting much but if we get to 8-8 i think it'll be key to saving his job. We have seen what Rex can do back in 09-10. If Idzik can put some talent on this team the sky's the limit.
yes, exactly... what Rex did last year was completely disgusting a giant slap in the face to the fans. he threw away any shot we had at making the playoffs by demanding sanchez start. if he lives and dies with sanchez again this year, he deserve to get the boot just like mark.
Yes. A Coaxh (and a QB) should get 5-6 years to develop, and absent an absolute disaster, success should extend that period. The Jets survived with zero offense whatsover, winning six, under a guy that isnt even a coordinator, and no skill depth whatsoever. This teams problems are greatly overexaggerated.
