I'm sort of confused by the rationale that has taken the fanbase by hold recently. Why is it that, the closer we get to the season, the more people think Geno Smith isn't ready to lead our team as quarterback? What's the obsession with him 'sitting down and learning'. I'm confused. What attributes about him make him less ready than say...Russell Wilson or Ryan Tannenhill? From what I can see in college, he seems to be at least equal with both of those prospects and probably a little better than Tannenhill at the very least.
No one here knows whether Smith is ready or not. The rationale isn't that he isn't ready, its what to do IF he isn't ready. If he is ready, then great, wonderful, let him kick ass. If not, then don't burn him with a shit receiving corps like the Jets currently have. The Jets need to be developing his weapons and it would be a disservice to Geno Smith to throw him into the fire IF he's not yet ready to handle it.

Tannehill played under the same oc in college. Wilson beat out Flynn. The only knock on wilson was his height. He played under center on college.
I have 3 gates that need to clear before Geno should be playing. 1. The OL needs to stabilize with the new additions, be it Colon, Peterman, Winters, or Aboushi. Let's not put the rook out there to get killed. The vet earning far too much money should take that beating. 2. We need some sort of offensive playmakers to step up. Maybe the combo of Ivory/Goodson can settle into that role and take some of the heat off the QB. Same with Holmes. He may or may not be ready for the opener but he will miss some time in camp, which could very well limit his knowledge of the playbook for a few games. 3. Weeks 5-9 of our schedule is the hardest by far (@ATL, NEP, PIT, @CIN, NO). If Geno gets a starting nod it should come in week 11 after the BYE @BUF. He gets more time to prepare and its on the road so he doesn't have to deal with the Jets "fans" at home.
Great points, especially 1. I'm sure the Jets will at the very least make sure the o-line isn't going to get him killed before putting him out there.
That is quite literally the opposite of what I've been seeing here and everywhere else. When he was drafted, everyone was saying to sit him and let him learn this season. Now everyone seems to want him to start.
That's why we should have drafted a TE or WR in the first round, but no same old defense for Rex routine.
Right now the fanbase is invested in Geno (even more than they would normally be invested in an 2nd round QB) because as soon as he was picked a bunch of front office personnel in the league anonymously said in the press, what we already knew - they passed on him because of character concerns (whether or not they were valid). So in the eyes of the fanbase, he cannot be allowed to fail. Well, you can't fail if you're not playing. So they'd rather see him on the bench doing nothing than on the field potentially validating these other NFL execs' comments and their own fears.
There are wheels within wheels going around on the Geno/Jets/attacks front. I'm actually really glad that the attacks have been on his character. Very few people have suggested that he isn't an NFL caliber talent at this point. It would have been much more devastating if the attacks had been on the Geno sucks front. People tend not to make obvious attacks where results may quickly prove them wrong.

Ryan Leaf can't even clear his throat in this discussion. He came out of nowhere to be a top pick. Literally out of nowhere. Off of his junior season he was barely draftable and then he had a good senior season, not a great season but a good one, that pushed him into the 1st round and then to the top of it. If Geno Smith had been a mediocre QB until his senior season and then suddenly had a good year out of nowhere then potential character concerns would be a real issue. Geno Smith had 3 good years in a row and he had a good 2nd year after his team changed offenses and he had a better 3rd year after his team changed conferences. There's just no comparison between Leaf and Smith that works. Smith is much closer to Peyton Manning on the talent scale than he is to Ryan Leaf.
He doesn't have any serious character concerns beyond being perfectionistic, thus kind of hard on himself. hes not a diva don't believe that BS media spin.
He's more ready than Sanchez was coming out of college. Sanchez had 1 season as a starter, Geno had 4 seasons as a starter. But only time will tell if Geno is ready for the NFL. Russell Wilson wasn't being talked about as a starter until he won the starting job in the training camp pre-season period where he showed he was ready. And that's the way it should be. If Geno shines in TC and Pre-season let him start. but unlike When Sanchez was crowned starter from the day of the draft let whoever starts this season EARN it.
