Updated!! Added Geno Smith, Sheldon Richardson, Dee Milliner, Stephen Peterman, and Chris Ivory. The red names are draft picks.
Lot of solid free agents still out there. WR - Robinson, Edwards, Lloyd, Gaffney TE - Clark, Boss, Winslow, Cooley, Heap S - Rhodes, Woodson, Clements, Elam OLB - Barnett, Boley We have needs and Id love to see one of each position on our roster. Starting to really have confidence in next season.
I'm waiting to hear that Edwards was signed. I always loved Edwards. He is solid depth and has experience on this team. I hope they bring him back
Claude Davis and Cliff Harris updated. Both were released after being charged with possession of Marijuana.
The old philosophy is that it is always better to be an UDFA than to be a 7th round pick because if you are stuck with that team that drafts you in the 7th round but as an UDFA you can study the current roster of a given team and in the case of the Jets if you are a TE have to know we are weak in that area so you might be more willing to sign as an UDFA with us than say want to be drafted in the 7th by the Pats if you are a TE.
Player is free agent & can go to any team that issues an offer/invite. That's why those late round picks aren't totally useless (even in the 7th round). It can give franchise an opportunity to force those some of those UDFA level prospects into your training camp. As for many really late draft picks, it's better to be undrafted & receive multiple offers from teams. Amongst the invites/offers, UDFA should be choosing team where he has the best chance to make the roster. Maybe he gets really lucky & gets to join a team that is desperate for talent @ his position. Example: -- Rontez Miles has better shot of making NFL roster in 2013 as UDFA signing with Jets (who are weak @ Safety) than drafted really late by some team with solid Safeties in starting lineup. Of course Rontez Miles will still be expected to be Special Teams contributor wherever he winds up also.
