The crazy thing was how good our offense looked in week one. I was very encouraged. Then the wheels of our offense seemed to fall off and stay off at the end of the first half in Pittsburgh, week 2.

That's because Buffalo game planned to stop the run. At the time the buzz surrounding the Jets was that they were going to have a juggernaut running game. Simultaneously, no one respected the pass. Sure enough, Mark lit them up.

Then teams realized that the Jets running game isn't nearly what it was hyped to be and that the key to shutting down the Jets offense was just to constantly attack Sanchez, and thats what they did the rest of the year.

Here's the thing that most people are overlooking:

Rex doesn't gaf about the offense. He doesn't sit in on the offensive meetings. He admittingly doesn't know the terminology of the offense. He's basically the DC with an expanded organizational role. That's why when Holmes and Wayne Hunter almost fought in 2011, and Holmes as taken out, Rex didn't even know that Holmes was supposed to be on field. In hiring Sparano, he was looking for an OC who would run that side of the team with a certain autonomy. That's why he brought in an ex HC. That's why we brought in another ex HC. Rex is looking to turn the offense over, along with the personell decisions. It's up to the OC to make the pieces fit. Hopefully "Morningwood" can use McKnight in some capacity.

This is good analysis and I think the only way Rex is a viable HC long term is if they can make something like this work in the next couple of years. McKnight should have been utilized for the last two years when it became clear that Greene was never going to be the same after injuries and essentially kept the running game stuck in the muck. Somehow I guess everyone in the organization like half of the people in this thread thought that his fumbling on special teams was equivalent to fumbling as a halfback. It wasn't.

If the new regime can find a way to work McKnight into a pass catching HB role it would be a good sign that they might be able to scheme effectively and make sound personnel decisions for the first time in....too long. Rex is about a year from having his vision for defense in place, if the same can be done on offense it could be a recipe for success. Still a lot of hurdles in the way though.

Where did you get the 6 fumbles from? I'm looking at his espn stats and I see 1 career fumble in 112 carries. If you are including his special teams fumbles, you really need to add each KR or PR as an attempt as well otherwise the stats are skewed. It would also be unfair to not include his catches either as attempts. As a RB Mcknight has fumbled less frequently than Shonn Greene unless espn has the wrong stats on their website. So Mcknight as a RB DOES NOT have fumbling issues. It's a myth!!! People are talking about only limiting him to special teams when he turns it over much more frequently on kick returns and rarely ever fumbles on rushing attempts.

He's also one of the top Kickoff returners in the league. He's had a few fumbles over the years, yes, but people are over reacting to it because they only focus on negatives. Funny nobody has mentioned his TD returns either. Hmmmmmmm. OMG he can't touch the ball without fumbling!!! Sky is falling!!!

McKnight isn't an offensive player he is a special teams guy. He has proven that over 3 full years.....I don't blame Sparano for not talking to him

I support Rex remaining the HC; but between Sanchez, Shonn Greene, and bringing in Sparano as OC he need to stay as far away from offensive personnel decisions as possible.

This man should have zero say in how the offense runs and in who should play on it. Having said that I support him remaining HC because players respect him and I think he remains one of the best defensive minds in the entire league. Getting rid of him will not serve us well long-term.

In case you didn't know, this is the case for nearly all head coaches. They are either defensive coaches turned head coach or offensive coaches turned head coach. How many head coaches in the NFL are actually great both offensively minded and defensively minded? Most tend to be ex-offensive coordinators which is why other teams have better offenses. We have one of the rarer ex-defensive coordinators which is why our defense is amazing no matter who is playing.
