Yes i understand but im saying we should to the same mentality. IMO i think Geno should start because he is our best chance to win. You know wants Mark steps on the field he is going to get boo'ed and he loses confidence
he should sit for one year. let garrard or mcelroy start, with the other guy as backup. get rid of the turnover machine, and tebow if m.m. does not think he can operate the west coast offense. eat about $6 million of el taco's contract, and trade him for picks in next year's draft.
Seriously, the best thing the Jets could do for Geno in preparation at this point is to throw the whole playbook at him. Everything. Kitchen sink. What he needs is something hard to master. He needs to feel that he is on top of it all and has done something really substantial to get ready for the season. Coddling with partial playbooks is for guys that you believe are bringing a lot to the stage and you want to make sure they get their feet on the ground by displaying their natural ability in a somewhat limited setting first. Geno is going to sink or swim based on the whole package. He's not a great enough athlete to overwhelm the field with his prowess. He's not an enormous personality who is going to cow the NFL, like Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck, and succeed that way. He's not an amazing change athlete like Dan Marino or RGIII who is going to change the way people look at the QB position. For Geno it's going to be everything cumulatively adding up to a great QB if he gets there. Part of that is going to be him knowing the Jets playbook better than Marty M knows it in 3 months.
I think he was pointing out that we should slowly add in plays for him early on if we do start him from day 1, be very vanilla and then adding some sprinkles and fudge and dip through out the year but again all this depends on how he looks throughout OTA's, rookie camp, mini camp, training camp and preseason We have a long way to go it'll be very interesting
This is also a good point maybe that might work Geno has the mentality and skill set of a big time QB just gotta put it all together
exactly! rodgers sat for 3 years behind favre at gb. we don't have an offense anywhere near that, so let the next draft supply the receivers. fix the lines first. doesn't matter who is back there unless you can protect him. at least guys like mccelroy or garrard will take sacks instead of turniing the ball over and over again like el taco loco does.
Final thought on this topic. Difference between Sanchez and Geno at the beginning point in both of their careers is that Mark essesntially only had 1 seasons worth of passing stats over his entire careeer. Meanwhile Smith has around 1500 attempts in college, he's experienced. But he has question marks and didn't come from a pro styled scheme. So who should start this season on game one? Whoever wins the offseason battle to start, who ever does better, whoever jells the best. Period. Smith, at this point, is the future..but let's not make the mistake that was made with Sanchez and annoint him the starter from day one. if he starts the season as the starting QB let it be the same way that Wilson won the job in Seattle, through a legitimate and honest competition without a pre-chosen winner. If he doesn't win the starting job out of the gate, let him work in to it the same way many other QB's have worked their way in to the starting lineup, including Brady, Favre, Collin K. and many others.
Not w/ a project guy, unfortunately he will be eaten alive by the fans and media if he struggles as a rookie. That could ruin him. We have upgraded the Ol and at RB which is good but what about the WRs/TEs? we are counting on Holmes to be completely healthy- is that fair? will Hill take big step forward? are we getting Braylon back?
Absolutely correct. It might be better for Smith's career were he to sit all season, but it makes no sense whatsover to enter next year's Qb heavy draft not knowing what they have in Smith. He will either sink or swim this year, or imo the Jets as an organization have no idea what they are doing. That doesn'e mean he should be handed the starting job, but he MUST see significant playing time or the Jets risk entering next off season without the knowledge they need.
Geno's game is not nearly ready to play, and he's simply not mature enough to deal with the pressure of starting in the NFL at this point ... let alone dealing with the heat of the NY media and fan base. If he starts he will be torn to shreds by mid-season.
What's wrong with starting Gerard this year and if QB is the BPA when the Jets pick take him and let him compete with Geno. Now that there is a rookie salary cap the risk to having to many good young QB's is much less than the risk of having not enough quality at QB. Next year the Jets will be in a salary cap position that allows them that luxury. The only high draft picks we have had previously were Clemens and Sanchez. Both look to be back up NFL QB's. Smith clearly slipped for a reason in a weak QB draft class. He isn't costing us a load of money and we certainly can afford to bring in another QB next year via the draft.
You know Junc...what I find amusing...is that the Sanchez sucks crowed is hysterical to cut him...how about we go to training camp, and see if the boy wonder can beat him.
What I find amusing is a guy who has some basic insight thinks a QB competition with a new OC is a good idea. The smart move is to start him or start Gerrard and let him sit. The Jets clearly have no intention of resigning Sanchez. He is essentially a lame duck QB unless you think the no talent bumbs on O are going to be enough to make him suddenly great this year?
I say start him. What's the worse that could happen, a 2 and 14 record and a chance of getting the number one pick for Bridgewater?
