I missed the fact where there were 32 elite qbs coming out in the draft next year guaranteeing the Jets get one
If the Jets are losing, let the other defense rape Sanchez. If Jets are winning, pull Sanchez in the 4th and let Smith build his confidence while gaining experience. In other words, Smith should get 0 games started, and maybe 5-6 games played next year.
There is only 1 good quarterback next year (Bridgewater). We're not bad enough to get the #2 overall pick. If we trade our next 3 1st round picks for Bridgewater, how do we surround him with talent later on? Oh, and there's no guarantee that the team with the #2 overall pick would even trade Bridgewater. St Louis was able to trade Griffin away because they already had a franchise qb in Bradford. The team with the #2 overall pick next year probably won't have a good qb which would allow them to trade Bridgewater away. The Jets need to keep drafting qb's until they find a good one. Geno fell into our laps. It was a great pick even if Geno ends up sucking
Cosign, and whos to say Bridgewater pans out? wasnt Barkley the center of attention a year ago? all the hype, plus he was on the #1 team. Bridgewater can fall just like Barkley did.
Start next season? Yes. To start the season? Ehhh. Face it, if the Jets are like 2-6 at some point, Woody will beg for Idzik/Rex to start Geno so fans start to come to games and there is some buzz around the team.
Right now we have 6 yes 6 QBs on roster.... at some point (very soon) that number has to change. My guess is this we go with 3. Obviously Smith is one and Garrard plus one other from Sanchez, Simms, McElroy and Tebow. Due to the cap hit its most likely Sanchez. Based on this I really don't see how going into TC that it would be a fair competition. As bad as Sanchez is he's still an NFL QB with experience. Personally I would like to see Smith get the nod and gain experience in this new WCO. But again I think this could very well suit Sanchez as well. The rest of our draft offensively was dire in terms of new weapons, so I'm wondering if we're done yet with bringing in new talent. This rebuild is going to be slow and painful I think, time to buckle up
Honestly it will be Geno, Garrard, Mcelroy or Tebow Thats what will happen. It is bad for the locker room to have Sanchez there with the rest now, hes really not welcomed anymore lol
As someone has said previusly, (xxxEdgexxx) Sanchez is mentally shot to pieces and the Jets did that to him with that 'win now' mentality. How the Jets treat him from now on will be scrutinised by the rest of the NFL, which worries me slightly with regard to picking up FA's. All to often we keep hearing how the Jets FO have lied, even Revis has said it lately. I believe in that old saying, "if you throw enough mud, some of it will stick.." and this is applicable here now. I do agree, Sanchez sticking around could be bad news for the locker room, but what exactly will the team do with him? He's not going anywhere this year, unless someone gets desperate at QB and makes a ridiculous offer for him, is there a team mad enough to do that.....ah yes Raiders ha ha. Nope, Sanchez is here this year. Tebow on the other hand will be cut within the next few days. There are already articles circulating this.
really? I was thinking the opposite, but who knows whats happening behind the scenes. if he's still here he's being groomed to be Genos backup i'd reckon. Garrad can't do it, simms certainly can't, and sanchez would be to depressing to even keep in the presence of his replacement. McElroy might be able to though. I'd say the hype around tim lessens with a rookie QB like Smith around than with mark last year. Got this picture of Garrard, Smith, Tebow, McElroy (maybe simms) for 2013 smith learning on the bench and that order minus DG for 2014. not sold on how accurate this thought is though so don't quote me. Just a concept rattling around, i won't commit to this being THE idea.
By the time the football season starts Geno will be the starting QB... Even if he isn't ready. I wish this kid went to a different team to learn behind someone b.c he needs it. His EGO and character cannot handle what is going on with the Jets. Hell Buffalo got a QB in the first and people are still ragging on the Jets. All they say in Buffalo is "Oh they surrounded that kid with lots of offensive pieces to help him out." They say none of that for the Jets. Only thing I hear about us is we have more QBs then offensive line...
We should start him so that we realize he is not the answer and we pick a real qb in '14 or trade for Nassib or Barkley.
The way I see it, our QB situation will go down like this. Starter: Garrard (vet QB who has experience in the WCO, is a fine stopgap guy to mentor Geno a bit while we have Geno sit to develop) Backup: Geno (No need to throw the rookie into the fire and kill his confidence. Let him sit, study, learn, and develop while we build an offense around the QB position itself) Backup 2: Sanchez (I think it really depends on if we are willing to eat the cap hit this year or not, honestly. If we aren't, he stays on as the third QB.) Wildcards: Tebow: Won't start for the Jets (or any other team, honestly). His fans need to accept that and move on. It's a possibility that the Jets keep him and convert him as a HB, but nothing is guaranteed. If Sanchez is cut/traded, it's POSSIBLE Tebow becomes the third QB, but I seriously doubt it considering he couldn't beat out McElroy (who is still on the roster). McElroy: Really nothing much to say here. He could stay if Sanchez goes and be the third QB, or he could be cut tomorrow. No clue. Simms: Do I even have to write anything up here?
Here's the argument against that. Having Sanchez around will raise the noise level considerably all through camp and into the season. The tabloids will have a field day with any Sanchez/Smith competition. The fans will line up mostly against Sanchez and stay there until he proves them wrong. A small segment of fans will line up against Smith and stay there until he proves them wrong. More fans will line up against Smith if Sanchez is still around because Sanchez does have his fans even at this stage of his Jets career. The Jets would be creating a larger anti-Smith contingent in the fan base than would naturally be there because QB competitions do that when the fans are invested both ways in the proposition at hand. David Garrard as the other QB just doesn't create that dynamic. If Garrard wins the competition and starts it isn't going to split the fan base. If Sanchez didn't look like a shell shock case at this point things would be different. If he looked like a guy who had some real upside and might have value down the road then maybe you could argue that the Jets should do whatever they could to preserve that value. Watching him just throw the ball up for grabs last December even after he'd been benched tells us where his frame of mind is and that's a place that does not help the Jets at all.
At this point, to avoid the media creating a circus, getting rid of Sanchez and tebow would be the best move. That would generate the least amount of media noise. But if we could, I would have an open competition with every QB on the roster this offseason. If you have to release a depth chart or whatever, Garrard should be on top until someone knocks him off
Only thing about Garrard is he has the tendency to get hurt. I just hope he stays healthy he is the only guy on this roster that can save and teach Geno. I sure as hell don't want Sandcheeze teaching him... Geno doesn't need to learn the Buttfumble.
Agreed on both points. Garrard is a proven vet of unknown worth at this point but still a proven vet. He should be on top of the chart until the day that Marty M tells Rex that Smith has passed him.
