How many snaps did Revis play last year? Why would anyone assume he is going to be HOF quality this year? It's not just that he wanted to be paid franchise QB money. It's not just that he didn't play last year do to injury. It's not just that the rookie pay scale changed making high paid players over all less valuable in the team concept. It's also about the team rebuilding. There is simply no need to tie up all that cash in one position on a team that isn't going to a SB in 2013. I'm not saying this is a great move. It may well be that over paying Revis will get us more value than the replacement parts we bring in. If that turns out to be the case Idzik wasn't taking this team anywhere with or without Revis.
Well fair enough. I feel like I will eventually come to terms with it but Revis was by far my fav player in the league (still is) so I'm still feeling kind of raw from it still.
It seems that there's some idiot article out there claiming Kyle Wilson replaces Revis & half this forum is reading it blindly. No matter how much you hate this trade, how is it possible to view this as Kyle Wilson replacing Revis? I'm truly baffled at this connection some posters are making. Also, I totally agree with you that Kyle is an average #2 CB. CB is not a HUGE hole that will tear down this defense.
Not to mention our passing defense wasn't bad last year and we had a relatively crappy pass rush. So if we improve our pass rush this season that should have a big impact on our pass defense. Probably not off-set the loss of Revis level impact but still will help a lot. I agree with you on the compensation though.
I don't get it either. Cromartie is replacing Revis and Wilson is replacing Cro. It's obviously worse than Revis/Cro but compared to the rest of the NFL it's not bad. It's average to probably above average if they stay healthy.
The Jets have no QB. The only way to even compete for a SB is with an ELITE defense. How does trading away your best defensive player accomplish this? So we can draft Tavon Austin? A guard? It accomplishes NOTHING.
What would you have accomplished with 2 years of Revis negotiation? He wanted to be the highest paid defensive player in the league. That's it. Would you have spent those 2 years begging & pleading for a home-town discount? He took ZERO guaranteed money to collect 16M a year. There's only one way to keep him. Offer 16M a year & guarantee some of it.
Hahaha an elite defense isn't making up the deficiences on offense right now. And how do you have an elite defense without safeties or an OLB? Also how do you sign safeties and that OLB if 13% of your cap is going to one of your CBs. Then with that elite defense, how do you make the offense manageable? The quickest way to getting that SB would be through the offense, not building an elite defense. This pick is another player we can add while addressing offensive and defensive needs in one swoop in the first round. This is a new team, we weren't having an elite defense this year with Revis and he was leaving anyways after this year. You go all out on Revis if we were contending for a SB or thought we could. You don't go all out on a corner when you don't have an offense or pass rusher. A corner can't be the best player on your team if you are hoping to win the SB.
According to Football Outsiders the Jets ranked 5th in the NFL last year against the opposing #1 WR. That's a tribute to Cromartie having an excellent season and of course to Rex's schemes, which make his CB's better. Now, if Kyle Wilson had been a hole you'd have expected the Jets numbers against #2 WR's to be pretty bad. That would stand to reason since Wilson usually covered the #2 guy after Revis went down. The Jets were 12th best in the NFL last year against the opposing #2 WR's. That's not what you would expect to see if you thought Kyle Wilson was a hole, right? Ok, so let's go a step further that that. Let's suggest that maybe Wilson was covering somebody other than the #1 or #2 guys, who were well handled and so the other WR's numbers are more reflective of his true contributions. The Jets were 16th best in the NFL last year against all other opposing WR's. So at the absolute worst Kyle Wilson was a slightly below average CB last year. In fact though he covered the 2nd WR more often than anybody else and he appears to have been an average to above average CB while doing that. Is this because he plays in a Rex Ryan defense? Does it matter given who he is playing for next year? The thing to take from all of this, BTW, is that Rex is a major weapon for the Jets. Darrelle Revis was on the Jets for 6 seasons and the 4 seasons the Jets ranked well on defense were with Rex running the show and Revis wasn't even on the field for most of one of those seasons.
PFF rated Kyle Wilson pretty highly last year, so to say he's an abysmal #2 CB is an assertion with no factual basis.
Everyone expects our corners to be like Revis and Cro when in reality Kyle is like most other #2 corners in the league. The difference is most #2 corners don't have the best CB in the game and a top 10 CB in front of them on the roster. I think people who think Kyle Wilson is the worst corner in the game, don't watch other football games. There are some really bad corners, worse that kyle that start on other teams. He's not amazing, but he's solid and not getting burnt left and right like everyone likes to portray That doesn't take into account if potentially this year we can generate a pass rush without blitzing. That can only help the corners out
Kyle Wilson does in essence "replace" a Darrelle Revis in this defense though. It's not so black and white in the secondary - CB 1, CB 2. etc. It's not like QB or kicker where the same guy always does the same job or you have a defined depth chart for the position. Kyle Wilson takes a much bigger role now covering recievers. Depending on the matchup/situation, he will be covering the opponent's top reciever. (scary I know) I also don't think it's a safe bet that Cromartie will be the same player he was last year. He's been up and down his whole career, not consistently at that level. If he was a stock and I was trader, I analyze last year as the anomaly and I'd be selling right now. Either way, the secondary which has been the strength of this team in the Rex era, just took a huge hit anyway you look at it. I think people take for granted just how good a guy like Darrelle Revis was. Most of the NFL teams have their secondaries get torched on a weekly basis. The Jets will now fall into that category. Considering the have little other strengths, and no firepower offensively to keep up - they will be at the very least bad in the short term with a bigger uphill battle in the long term.
Why would the Jets have had to guarantee some of it? Tampa didn't and he signed... The contract he signed is actually favorable to Tampa, as Revis is betting on himself. If he signed 16/m per with no guarantees - he definetely would've signed say 13-mil per WITH some guarantees... that's a more player-friendly contract. Revis just wanted a better contract and he got it, but there's differant ways to write that up... I think he would've taken less money per year with guarantees - no body wants to play without guaranteed money.
How much of this takes into account opponents playing conservatively against us basically knowing as long as they didn't turn it over a ton they would win? let's look at run vs. pass 2009-2012: 2009: 501 pass attempts, 420 rush attempts 2010: 531 pass attempts, 408 rush attempts 2011: 507 pass attempts, 451 rush attempts 2012: 494 pass attempts, 495 rush attempts do we notice any trends? that's almost 100 ore rush attempts from our peak in 2010 to the abysmal 2012. Our O was incredibly bad last year, I would take any info about our D and basically throw it out b/c it tells us very little. I agree we are not lost on defense, we have a brilliant defensive mind, we have some building blocks up front, a top 10 corner in Cro but last year doesn't tell us a lot.
That's only your opinion. My opinion is that Revis laughs at 13M per season. 16M no matter what ... that's the deal. No home-town discounts. If he wanted 13M per season with guarantees then he would've negotiated that deal with the Bucs.
