the NBA playoff rules are a little strange. I've heard of this before, but while a division winner is guaranteed at least a 4 seed, home court goes to the team with the better record. So why bother calling them a 4 seed if they're not assured home court? I don't get the point. Could happen with the Clippers this year.
because if they didn't give the division winner the 4 seed at a minimum, you could have a division winner as low as the 8th seed or even miss the playoffs if you simply seed by record. but the NBA wants to reward the division winners as one of the top 4 seeds in the playoffs, regardless of whether they have home court for the series.
I guess, but it would be pretty unusual to have a division winner finish worse than 6th in the conference. I don't think it's ever happened. Either way, they could've said division winners have to be top 5 and it'd be the same thing, since being the 4 is no better than being the 5 in this case.
Dallas had an outside shot of passing Utah and the Lakers, but they lost by double digits at home to the Suns :lol:
Yeah, I've always disliked that as well. Last year with Atlanta and Boston I believe that happened. Atlanta was the #5 but had HC advantage because Boston had a worse record, despite winning the division. To me, it seems like they might as well just give em the #4 seed, but I guess the better seed # gets you into the better bracket in most cases, but that's where the advantage ends. I think another part of that is because they don't reseed each round, they keep the brackets set in stone, unlike the NFL where the highest seed always plays the lowest each round.

I hate the seeding in the NBA. I love the playoffs in the NBA a lot more than how the NFL does it, but seeding wise, the NBA's doesn't make sense.
NBA challenge always has lopsided questions tonight: Who will have more points at the end of the first quarter, Carmelo or JR Smith? Well, on one hand you have the league's leading scorer. Lakers win by 2. I only caught the last few minutes but HUGE FT disparity in LA's favor. THey are 1 game up on Utah for the 8 seed as Utah also won tonight. Curry's last second 3/4 court heave almost went in to win the game. After he threw it up he did a couple step backpedal, that backpedal when your shot feels good, but it didn't fall. Lakers sneak away with a win, but Kobe's health is in question.

Interesting things in the East. With a win or IND loss NY clinches the 2 seed. Brooklyn can still steal the 3 seed from IND if IND loses out and BK wins out. Atlanta is now .5 games up on Chicago for the 5 seed. So for Deathstar, if he could pick his bracket it would be BK/ATL/MIL and leave NYK/IND/BOS/CHI in the other half. Would be interesting if Miami's path gets even easier if BK stays in the 4 but ATL grabs the 5. From a Knicks fan perspective, we want BK to grab the 3 and then ATL to slip to the 6 giving us BK/ATL/BOS in our bracket while sending IND/CHI into a first round matchup with the winner taking on Miami. Chicago plays @MIA, @ORL, vs WAS. Atlanta plays vs TOR, @NYK. So if both teams win out, they tie for the 5th seed. Then based on NBA tiebreaker CHI grabs the 5 seed because of their 2-1 H2H record over ATL Realistically, I see BK staying in the 4 seed and CHI grabbing the 5 seed.
Thanks for the tidbits Displaced. As a Bucks fan, (by force, home state) all hope is lost. Everybody in WI agrees. That 1st round match up with Miami is seemingly what they want. They can't beat anyone, and it's going to be one of the biggest 4-0 beat downs in recent playoff memory. Pathetic, and exactly why I can't root much for them. As a Thunder fan, I'm feeling good. Locking up the 1 would be huge.
