His footwork, his timing, his accuracy, his consistency, his ball security, his mental makeup, and his confidence. Now confidence/mental makeup + footwork might lead to better consistency and then better accuracy. But that's not a given. Even when was the most mentally strong (2010), he still wasn't very consistent as seen in all 3 playoffs games and most of our regular season games. You see why nobody is really excited in seeing Sanchez play more? He can get better, it would be great if he got better, but he dug himself such a hole last year that he has to improve tremendously to stay on this team, otherwise he just becomes another QB that couldn't cut it on the Jets. I would love if he just can flip some switch and become a franchise QB but he was in a position to do so in year 3 and he went backwards against NYG, PHI, and then MIA. He was in a position to do so this year and he went backwards even more. He looked like a rookie in his 4th year, and his stats are very similar to his rookie year than his 2010 or 2011 season. Basically we need to start over on Sanchez, after giving him a big contract and now not only are we starting over, we are starting over from a QB who looked like nothing like the 2010 or beginning of 2011 self. It's going to be a tough, uphill battle for MM. If he cane make Sanchez serviceable, that's great for next year, but we are still going to be looking for our franchise QB next year.
again how does competition impact basic footwork? Seems to me the more QB's you bring in the less time the OC can spend with the best QB to improve him.
I see why but a lot of what you say is because of the circumstances and again the answer to a new QB is not on the Jets roster. Look at the breakdown of plays the guy did on the Houston game and I think that is Mark in a nutshell makes some great throws misses ones he should make. To take a step up you need help and Sanchez just did not have it last year. Again, I think Marty will fix the help part with good coaching and a well defined game plan (I hope). Mark needs to work on his mental make-up when things get bad he needs to not let the NY media get to him. He never recovered from the butt fumble mentally he needs to. It is alot easier to throw the ball accurately when you are not thinking you have to make perfect throw for your receivers to catch the ball. Mark needs to work on his short passing and get the easy throws to get into a rhythm.
I'm talking about coaching, fundamentals. Point out the flaws and correct them. MM brings that to the table. You bring in further competition to raise the level of play in practice. Players will improve when they are being pushed for a job. The Jets are going to go with what they have right now without ruining the cap completely.
Hey that's such a great article! Somebody should have made a thread on it! Good thing you had me pegged as somebody who doesn't look at stuff like this. :breakdance: in b4 "Rabble rabble stfu dolphins fan rabble rabble"
It is not only fundamentals but philosophy. get the ball out quick and on time short routes that should be open. Not alarm clock on-time like Sparano- I think this killed Mark alarm clock off throw the ball no matter what. I am talking timing on time between the receiver and the QB.
He beat Peyton Manning in Indy in the last minute...he beat Tom Brady in New England...he played pretty well in Pitt. How was he 'not consistent' ??? How many of this year's/last year's playoff QB's were markedly better ????????? 1980: Richard Todd, 30 interceptions. 1981, 1982: Richard Todd takes NYJ to playoffs.
No problem with the coaching. I don't buy into players at the pro level improving by being pushed by competition especially in this case when all the competition is below the standard we need to have a successful franchise.
We scored 0 first half points on the Colts and 17 2nd half points. Against NE, we scored 0 first quarter points and Sanchez didn't get going ( he was in a rut) until he backpedaled and hit Braylon. In Pitt, we scored 3 first half points. It wasn't consistent play, but it was enough to get us wins in IND and NE where we held the opposing team to 16 and 21 points. In the first half of our 2010 playoff games we put up 0,14,3 points with 2 RZ trips getting 0 points (IND and NE) and a fumble going for 7 the other way (PITT). In the second half of our 2010 playoff games we put up 17, 14, and 14 (2 for a safety) including a RZ trip with 0 points. In the regular season of 2010, our best year under Sanchez, we had games where the offense put up 0,3,6, and 9 points. The defense gave up 9, 45, 10, and 10 in those games. He played well for us, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was consistent. Not sure why Todd was brought up. I said it is possible Sanchez turns it on, but it just isn't likely. Hence I am a fan of bringing in other QBs to hold over the position until we find a new QB. I would love it if Sanchez was our QB, but went into year 3 and year 4 thinking that and went 8-8 and then 6-10.
do 2nd half points not count? talk about nitpicking, two of the greatest wins in franchise history and then almost leading us back from a 24-0 hole at Pitt and we are nitpicking about when the pts were scored.
I mentioned second half points, reread the post you quoted. I don't think you understand my post (and you clearly didn't read part of it). The point was whether or not Sanchez was consistent, and he wasn't. It's why we started so slow in Pitt and IND and the first Q of NE, Sanchez couldn't get going. And against Pitt, we dug one hole too many to escape from. There were two different QBs playing in the PITT and IND games. 1st half Sanchez which did nothing to help the Jets and even hurt them. Second half Sanchez in Pitt and 4th Q Sanchez in IND which protected the ball, made better throws, and got going. He's a streaky, inconsistent passer. You really want to argue that?
I agree 100% IF it's a fair competition. There's nothing Sanchez does better than Garrard. On a level playing field there's no way Sanchez can outplay him. Other than health, the question will be, does Garrard really get a fair shake or does Rex's love for Sanchez plus his ridiculous contract tip the scales in Sanchez's favor? Even if Sanchez gets the nod, by Week 5 Garrard will be starting because we'll likely be no better than 1-3 and trying desperately to salvage another lost season. Unless of course the few Sanchez supporters are smarter than the other 99% of the football world, and Sanchez magically stops turning the ball over and becomes the complete opposite of what he's been for four years --- a turnover machine. I won't hold my breath.
In Pitt he barely had the ball. Pitt opened w/ a 9 minute TD drive and held it for 11 mins in the 1st qtr. That's not a recipe for early success. He and the O struggled early in the other games, we also didn't run it well- is that his fault too? we were establishing our gameplan, you don't have to score on the 1st drive or even in the 1st qtr. We set up the rest of the game and had success. He got blinsided in Pitt, any QB would have fumbled and I still don't believe it was a fumble as his arm was moving forward. He had one bad TO in 6 playoff games and it wasn't that bad of a TO in SD. He has been very streaky in the reg season, he has been really good in postseason. if we had postseason Mark in the reg season we'd be set.
Player #1 - 2,281 atts, 54 INTs, 61% Comp%, 85.8 Rtg - 1 INT every 42 atts Player #2 - 1,867 atts, 69 INTs, 55% Comp%, 71.7 Rtg - 1 INT every 27 atts Player #1 - 380 rushes, 44 fumbles, 4.6 ypc - 1 fumble every 8.6 atts Player #2 - 125 rushes, 43 fumbles, 2.7 ypc - 1 fumble every 2.9 atts If both players are healthy, who would you trust to take care of the football and move the offense? I'm going with player #1
Except, a fair reading of the analysis, puts positives at 60%', non negative at 70%, and a few of the negatives while attributed to Sanchez...actually we're catchable... So, a minor improvement even on that basis....puts him as a better than average, pretty solid QB.
so both sets of #s were w/ the same playersa round them in the same situation? how many playoff wins does player #1 have? In 2 playoff games Garrard has as many INts as Sanchez in 6 playoff games, in 2 playoff games Garrard has as many fumbles as Sanchez in 6 playoff games. mark is a better QB when all things are equal.
You can be good in the postseason and inconsistent as Sanchez was. Not sure why you typed all of that out, it had nothing to do with Sanchez being streaky/inconsistent which he was.
