Keller is a great talent in my opinion. I think it'd be a mistake to let him go. He's the best tight end the Jets have had in a long time.
Tell that to Favre - and see if he agrees. I'd take his opinion over yours any day of the week. And twice on Sundays.

Only the Jets fans overrate his talent. I cannot see him getting real big money. He is not even a tight end
Keller being friends with Sanchez should hold no weight in deciding if he stays or goes..... Coles was a friend of Pennington, but that didn't mean he wasn't productive when Chad was dumped for Favre ..... The tight end position as we've come to know is dead! None of the modern day tight ends coming out nowadays are great blockers. The one's who are don't have the speed/athleticism to hit the seam & make plays downfield. It's fashionable to bash Keller for being a poor blocker & not being a "complete" tight end. But the reality is...the "complete" tight end doesn't exist anymore. Keller has been a solid Jet from his rookie year on.Is he a hall of famer?No he's not.But he gets open, makes big plays & defenses respect him. If he leaves he will be missed.
The only reason I attached Favre discussion in Keller consideration was simply because Favre has been a WCO QB all his life - and a damned good one at it. Countless many have asked what Keller would be like if he had top QB throwing at him - without realizing that actually happened in his rookie year. While his stats are not 'impressive' per se (for a veteran TE) he did more than damn fine as a rookie. With WCO now coming in as the new offensive system, how can anyone ignore such a key piece of information? If Sanchez holds him back - that's another problem. Keller will not be the misfit that many people here proclaim he will be in this new system, to say the very least - keep that in mind.

+1 Tight Ends that can block, run and catch at a high level are few and far between..... Gronk, Vernon Davis.....Jason Witten? There aren't many that excel at both responsibilities. Keller has the speed and ability to make plays, I would like more consistency from him but if we can sign him to a reasonable number Im all for it. Sorely mistaken. Jay Novacek was a road grater that Dallas Clark is. The root goes way back to the days of Coryell Offense - where Kellen Winslow Sr. would spring lead block after lead block on opposing DLs times and again. That's how he got into HoF, I shit you not!
That was five years ago. I don't see how much guide that is for the next couple of years, and it was, after all, Brett Favre who despite the haters for him here and the fact he was only here one year, will go down as the best Qb to have played for the Jets since Namath.
What's the max you'd be willing to pay for him? It's easy to say, "keep everyone" but it gets a lot trickier when dollar amounts need to be thrown out.
Yeah I remember Novaceck during that Dallas run in the 90s.....he could block his ass off and was a reliable weapon in the passing game (similar to Pittsburgh's current TE, Im drawing a blank on his name)......but he wasn't a guy with big-time speed for a TE or anything like that......Winslow was before my time..... But I was talking about current NFL players, not past and present. There just isn't more than 3-4 guys tops that have a big impact as a blocker and also has that game breaking speed to be a huge threat in the passing game. That was my point......you usually have a top speed, receiving threat or a very good to great blocker at TE You would be hard pressed to name more than 2-4 TEs that can kill you in the passing game with size and speed, and also kick ass as a run blocker in today's NFL.....Gronk and Davis are the only 2 I feel comfortable saying they can dominate in both the pass and run game. I'm still mad at Keller for dropping that goal line TD against the Steelers in AFCG. It was a tough catch but do-able. If he catches that...
I'm still mad at Schotty for that sequence and not running the ball for 3 out of 4 downs at least with the ball on the 2.
I'm still mad at Wayne Fucking Hunter being too damn lazy/tired to put his hand in the dirt before the ball was snapped. Basically putting a big sign on his head that a pass was incoming ON THE GOAL LINE. Of course he got a contract extension and was Jets starting RT for an entire season afterwards.
Keller's a decent TE and nothing much more than that. At a bargain rate of say $2M a year he'd be a plus. At anything more than that the Jets might as well try to find a real plus player who can do it all instead of relying on a guy who is an average receiver and below average blocker. The position Keller's skills would be really good at is the off-TE in the spread. He'd do just fine as an option for Brady as long as that's all he had to do, be an option among many. He's also going to be 29 in September. Guys with his talent level generally don't have long careers after they hit 30. They're competing against younger guys with upside at that point and even if the injuries don't get them their lack of upside knocks them down the ladder some and then off of it completely.
