it's a small sample size. Any team that gives a big money long term contract to a QB based on one postseason run is foolish. How could you risk it based off of a few games? We have hundreds of games showing him not to be an elite QB, but you think he should be paid like one just for one postseason? He's 28. He's not young. He doesn't project to improve.
Sanchez proves your point Yis. Tannenbaum has already did his mea culpa on this as well as if this needs a finer point on it.
yeah I was thinking of Sanchez earlier. I'm sure Tannenbaum regrets that idiotic contract. A guy needs to prove he can play at a consistently good level before you give him a big long term deal. Common sense, really. Paying him now when he just won a Super Bowl is ensuring he's overpaid. The Ravens need to rebuild, with their defense getting old (Ngata 29, Reed 34, Lewis retired, Suggs 30, etc.), and this contract is a killer.
He's a career 2/1 TD to interception guy. Decent stats in the regular season, but among the all time leaders in playoff wins. In back to back years he has gone to the AFC championship game, and won a Super Bowl in one of them. Active QBs with more playoff wins than Flacco's 9 include just Brady and Rothilsberger. The vaunted Bree's and Rodgers, who are both better regular season and stat QBs, have only 5 playoff wins. No Flacco is not the best QB in the game, but he is the most recent to land his big payday. You can bet that on Rodgers next contract he will get more if he wants it. Joe just happens to be the regaining Super Bowl MVP, the new face of the Raves with Ray Lewis retiring, and play the position that pays the most around the league. I'm honestly shocked that so many of you think he got too much. It's what franchise QBs get now days. Joe has proved he is a franchise QB in the most important way, winning.
You rebuild by drafting young, cheap players. The ravens already started this process with guys like Upshaw waiting in the wings to assume starting roles. You also have to keep in mind the cap number does not go above 14.5 mill till 2016, there is plenty of time and room to maneuver before the big hits come into effect.
I think that contract is going to bite them in the ass down the road and that Flacco's not up there with the big boys (Brady,Rogers, etc). But as to the idea that Flacco's a one playoff run wonder, just to play devil's advocate, Flacco through no fault of his own came very close to winning the last two SBs. The year before as a 7 point underdog on the road, he outdueled Brady in the AFC Championship game with over 300 yards and a pair of TDs. If Lee Evans simply falls to the ground with that game-winning TD in his mitts, Flacco ends the game with 320 yards passing and 3 TDs. The Giants (Eli-Manningham) pull out another miracle over a pretty much Gronk-less New England thanks to the Brady-Welker clinching misfire at the end. Giants-Ravens instead? Who knows. The point is that Flacco came pretty close the year before.
Not quite. And Rodgers has been far better than Flacco. Flacco has a career YPA of 7.08. Rodgers 8.13. They're not even comparable.
.... And where did I starting lining up thier regular season stats? No where in that post. I only pointed out that Flacco is a good regular season QB with those numbers. I also stated that Rodgers is due a big raise over his deal signed in 2009. Nice that you ignored both the Flacco has by far more playoff wins and that his cap number does not climb above 14.5 mill for 3 years. Your ignoring the facts of the matter and only looking at the sensational parts of the story. Over the next three years he is going to average under a 13 mill cap hit. Obviously this is a horrible deal. :breakdance:
You also incorrectly described Flacco's stats. Who cares who is due what? Based on the current QB contracts, Flacco is grossly overpaid. It's not about the next three years. It's about the entirety of the contract. Nice that you're ignoring the facts and focusing on number of playoff wins. I guess Sanchez is also not overpaid, considering he's second to Flacco in road playoff wins, I believe. I'd be surprised if the Ravens are back in the AFC championship game anytime soon, but hey, at least they overpaid Flacco when they had the chance.
If my stats are so incorrect, give me the good ones if your not too lazy to find them. Yea I'm focusing on his playoff success, because when it comes down to a QBs pay scale and legacy, that tends to be the driving force behind both of them. How exactly has Sanchez been doing lately? Seeing as he has not even made the playoffs lately he should not be in the discussion. Not sure why you bring him up except in a poor attempt to make a snide comment. Most Sanchez supporters bring up his four playoff wins when attempting to argue for him though. Why? Because playoff wins for a QB matter to people. It is only about the next three years. THe chances of him not getting his contract reworked before his cap charge jumps to 28.5 mill your kidding yourself. Joe Flacco gets to go on TV and say its about respect. He gets to bank his security on over 50 mill guaranteed. Lie all NFL contracts the rest of the earnings are there in spirit, but can always be tinkered with to create cap room if needed and in this case they will. Funny how Ozzie Newsome is always held up as a great NFL GM, but suddenly is now overpaying for a QB. That or your opinion is completely full for shit.
I don't need to do your work for you. I just pointed out that the stat you did post was factually incorrect. Way to completely miss my point. The point is that judging QB solely by playoff wins is inane. Completely inaccurate. Enough with the attacks. Obviously you know you're wrong, so just admit it rather than resorting to childish insults.
It's not about beliefs. If you look at career stats or yearly stats, they ARE better. Looking at ONE post season run is not enough. Drew Brees broke the all time passing record last season. Flacco's QB rating last season was 87.7. ranked #12. Yeah he had a good run in the playoffs, where he has usually struggled, but I don't think it's smart to give him the biggest contract in the history of the league, when the team and its wins also rely a lot on defense. He hasn't done enough. Tom Brady has 3 rings and doesn't make close to that. He was better than Flacco last year and pretty much every year of his career. Flacco only had a 57% completion in the playoffs this year, despite the high 117 rating, 11 TD, 0 INTS. In 2011, Eli Manning had 65% completion with a 103 rating, 9 TD, 1 INT In 2010, Aaron Rodgers had 68% completion with a 109 rating, 9 TD, 2 INTS In 2009, Drew Brees had a 70% completion with a 117 rating. 8 TDs, 0 INTS I don't see Flacco's recent run as being any better than any of the other recent super bowl winning QBs. 11 TDs and 0 picks is really good, but 57% completion is noticeably weak compared to the rest. Flacco is not elite. He may be really close, but having one good post season run does not equate to paying somebody the highest money EVER in the NFL. We can revisit this in a few years and see what happens, but unless they luckily draft another Ray Lewis, they will certainly take steps back over the next couple years, especially with a lot less money to pay FAs now. Remember when Revis held out in 2010? We gave him a big contract and subsequently lost a large chunk of talent after the season. I see something very similar happening with the Ravens.
So with no proof you say the stat is incorrect? I say your full of shit. Winning QBs get paid. Flacco has had the best possible timing of Any QB coming into a new contract. He is the face and leader of his team now. This deal represents a 3 mill a year bump over last off-seasons offer. So the Ravens have always felt like he was worth big time money. TE playoffs sealed the deal for this contract. It is only about the next three years. This deal is about 50 mill guaranteed, Joe being able to say he is "respected" by his team and the highest paid QB in the league. If you think money is not going to get shifted around before his cap hit reaches 33 mill then your being silly. You make claims with no backing and say I'm being childish. Your the one crying like a child. Back up your arguments or move along kiddo.
Your right about it not being too much better, if better at all. The 11 TDs to 0 picks i believe was only reached once before. Brees makes 20 mill a year, only slightly less than Flacco. He also got 60 mill guaranteed, more than Flacco over a shorter contract. Rodgers contract is starting to become a story itself. He is getting paid around the same as Kolb for perhaps the best QB in the NFL right now. The contract was done before the 2009 season and vastly underplays him at this point. There are rumors swirling that the team has started working on the framework of a new deal for him. I would be willing to bet it surpasses Flacco's deal, even if only by a little. Tack on an extra year and its a 140 mill contract instead of 120, much like Flacco did to get ahead of the 100 mill Brees got. Eli also signed his deal before 2009, getting just under 100 mill over six years. His base salary goes from 13 this coming season, to 15, to 17 mill in 2015. talent wise of the three I see him as closest to Flacco. His cap hit in these last three years is around 20 mill a season. There is not much need for the giants to try and restructure this deal yet. I'm sure Eli would love to get a talks going and get some long term security. Again I think Flacco's deal has set the bar moving forward. As these guys you mentioned will all surpass this in some way on thier next contract if still playing at a high level. The Rodgers deal which is reportedly being worked on very quietly should be the first one to over take it.
