Revis has a 9mil cap hit in 2013. Trading him brings the cap hit to 12mil, as past bonuses given accelerate up to the 2013 cap. Then they need to sign guys they got picks for, accounting for roughly and additional 2mil. They do save money in 2014 by trading him now, but it cost more cap money in 2013. I'd still trade him if value was right. Just pointing out the intracacies in this decision.
More of what Idzik hasn't done... Just letting this all boil up without saying anything, without speaking to Revis' reps, letting him hear about these rumors from the likes of Rich Cimini, not firmly denying them (even if they are true). But granted, he did not make these issues so he is not the highest on my list of Jets Management blunderers. You want to talk about reports...I have never heard Revis say that he wants Mario's contract, that is also speculative, all I've heard him say is that he wants to be a Jet for life. Yes he has held out, and yes that is frustrating as a fan (believe me I'm his biggest fan so I suffered through that last hold out), but players hold out all the time in the NFL...rarely does it turn into this type of media circus and charade...that is my problem. Granted, when it comes to Revis, I prob have stronger concerns than most Jets fan...but being as objective as I can, I still cannot seem to understand the lack of class and integrity with which this organization operates. Maybe this isn't the thread for this post, I apologize...been holding this all in lately. Hope it all works out in the end, though I seriously have my doubts.
^Dude, grab a hold of your nuts. It's a fucking business and Revis wants a lot of the business. I will be the first person to say that I <3 Revis and want to him to play many more years as a member of the Jets, be captain, raise the Lombardi in a Kelly Green Jets uniform and one day applaud his achievements in Canton. Unfortunately, this is not going to happen the way I would like it to. We signed a piece of shit, scrub named Holmes to a bullshit contract with oodles of front loaded moneys. We basically told Holmes, "You are going to be a star." Holmes, decided that the, "star" part wasn't really for him, but he likes the money and wants to keep it anyway. Now, what do you do? You have a bunch of scrubs on your offense and little cap room to make a move. Laron Landry still wants to be a member of the Jets, awesome. You have Cro, 1st rd pick Kyle Wilson and Revis. Our secondary, looks pretty damn good when everyone is healthy. You trade Revis. You resign Landry, you have cro and wilson and now 2 awesome draft picks and maybe a 3rd. With Wilk and Coples looking to be a solid future tandem find a MLB now for good value, OLB and DE, get pass rushers that will make Brady shit his pants and wilson, cro and Landry can have a field day. Finally, deal with Holmes for one more season (restructure if you can, but no extensions please), fix the right side of the offensive line and LG, pray that Sanchez finds accuracy and awareness, and get a running back that can restore the good faith of Ground 'N pound. it is 99.99999999% likely Revis is no longer with us, embrace this. Let's see what last gift Revis can give this embarrassed organization. Fuck you Holmes
You sound like a Revis fan and not a Jet fan. The Jets are not inclined to Mevi$'s or Any other player's agents while they are trying to scout talent at the combine. Only to have the agents bitch to the press the the team is snubbing them. They already denied it, even Rex. They also said they would listen to all offers on everyone. And it has been stated he wants to be paid like the top defensive player in the league, not just the top CB in the league. hence the 16M+ per yr (MW's deal). You're media sheep and gullible, i'm sorry for that.
Why would they say they were? March 12 is two weeks away, should they give leverage to jack up the price. If you are a GM that was one great corner from winning the Superbowl, and could get Revis for 31 and 34 overall..... You tell me.
Yes this is true, but done correctly there is no reason they won't want Revis. They will still have a number of mid round picks this year, plus not all of those guys are going to be getting huge deals. They are trading away Alex Smith so his salary will be off the books, They have another 1st round WR that can should develop in AJ Jenkins if Michael Crabtree becomes too expensive, they still have Mario Manningham for a few years, and drafts to supplement their players. Yes I agree you can't expect to retain your entire defense but no one ever retains their entire defenses forever, and it's smarter to put your money where it will be the most valuable. They will be able to go without players like Ahmad Brooks just because of their overall depth, and because of how much stronger Revis makes a defense on his own. If Colin Kaepernick continues to develop as they expect he will become the driving force behind their offense, and they are clearly a smart enough organization that they won't back themselves against a wall with the cap down the line by being desperate for playmakers etc.
This is the same team that got 2nd rounder + extra for Alex Smith. Niners are way too smart to trust. I'm sure they'll speak with the Jets before draft day. However, I disagree with the common theme that Jets have a shot & Niners 1st and Chiefs 2nd rounder. Revis is a rental only (and he's coming off surgery). I think more realistic package for Revis is Chiefs 2nd rounder & 4th or 5th rounder. ==== As far as racking up picks, I think Jets can get more out of the Niners if they dangle their #9 pick. With all the picks Niners have, I see them giving up 3 or more picks to get #9. It gives Niners chance to add high quality prospect & doesn't wreck their salary cap which lets Niners keep their core together when contracts are ready to expire. Also leaves Niners with enough chances to add fresh/young talent through their own draft.
they are lying. all 31 teams are interested in him. thinking about the Niners D with Revis on it scares the hell out of me.
If he can trade him and actually get something in return he shouldn't hesitate one second in getting it done. You can bet your farm Mevis will walk so fast when this season is over all you will hear is a rush of air. Then they get nothing but a comp third.
I just read that Idzik and Woody snubbed Revis' agents at the combine. why not meet with them and discuss some kind of extension?
Not really going to get into a tit for tat. Been a jets fan my whole life living in LA, devoted as they come...but that's neither here nor there. I'm far from a media sheep, and if you think Rex's denial in that press conference did anything for anybody then please.... If anything Revis wants to be paid market value. I can't blame him, do you settle for less at your place of employment? I understand that the organization is backed into a corner, and that is a separate issue...but lets not chastise someone for asking for fair compensation. You guys can get excited and just go on raving about how we can draft Barkevious Mingo or Gio Bernard with this extra pick and you may well be right, so by all means. But my opinion is that five years from now there won't be any debate, this will be viewed as a disaster. Perhaps it is the only choice at this point, just peeves me is all. Agree with the post about Holmes and his uselessness, epitome of everything that plagues this organization. Overpaid, unproductive, and has the organization by the balls.
They save money this year by trading him. You're not accounting for the 6 mil going out the door. His cap hit if cut this year is 12. 9 plus 3 mil prorate. But 6 goes out the door reducing this years hit from 9 to 6. It's next year where we take it on the chin.
Hey all...Niners fan. Thought I'd check in to discuss a possible trade. First off, if you are thinking the Niners will give up #31 and #34....AND another pick, that won't happen. Niners just don't operate that way. I see what you guys are saying about how they have been close 2 years running now and may want to go "all in" with those picks to get them over the top...but I really don't see that happening. If they were an aging team then I think that might hold some water. They are in a position right now to be really good for a long time and will probably have multiple shots at a title. The only core player they have who they need to look at replacing due to age is Justin Smith and DE will be a priority in the draft (and one of the reasons they won't spend those picks on a one-year rent-a-player). ...and it would HAVE to be a on-year thing for them. They can't pay what Revis wants any more then the Jets can. They are in a fairly good position in terms of the cap right now but they will likely have to look at resigning Crabtree next year as well as probably extend Kaepernick (and if he trends the way he has that might be a BIG one). I'm as big a fan of Revis an anyone whos not a Jets fan. I'd LOVE to see him patrolling the secondary. It just really isn't Baalkes MO to give up huge $$$ or picks for one guy no matter who he is. What they USUALLY do is extend guys really early to what end up being below market contracts in order to keep them together. Thats why Bowman has ALREADY been extended. My guess is that the 49ers might go as high as their #2 pick and maybe another #4 or #5 and I think that will not be enough to get it done. Now...if SOMEHOW they could extend Revis to something substantially lower than what he's asking for...THEN I could see it. Then again tho...if that were the case he wouldn't be on the block in the first place.
Because the first substantive discussions the two sides have will probably be the last substantive discussions they have. There's no reason to close doors at this point and also no reason to believe that the Jets would make Revis any kind of substantive offer that he might accept before he's proven to be healthy. When you have a conversation before you that is as likely to close avenues as keep them open it makes sense to delay that conversation as long as possible. Can you imagine the media reaction to leaks that the Jets and Revis agents have met and are at an impasse on the terms of an extension?
Seems to me that both of us have similar views on what Niners are willing to offer. I thought the max for Revis is that Chiefs 2nd rounder + 4th or 5th rounder. You think the max is the Niners 2nd rounder + 4th or 5th rounder. What do you see Niners offering for the #9 pick in the draft? It would give you the chance to draft a highly prized CB (but it won't be the top CB prospect because he'll be gone). I think this is something Niners would pay more for. You're team is so good that it won't get draft pick this early for years. Also, you still get full control of your salary cap.
From everything I've read it seems that teams see players #5 through 25 as almost the same in terms of talent. As such, I don't see them using a ransome to move up that high. I think the 49ers are more likely use that first pick on a DE/Safety, trade down from that Chiefs pick, trade a few of those picks for picks next year (and get BETTER picks by doing so), and use the lower rounders to move up from their spots in rounds 2, 3, and 4 to get the guys they want. Trading for picks the following year is part of how they got so many picks to begin with. The issue here is that the 49ers don't have many holes. They effectively redshirted nearly their entire rookie class. LaMichael James only saw playing time because Kendall Hunter was hurt. They could also be in the market to go get a vet like Revis, but Harvin is a possibility as well.
With our luck, we'd ship him out and have to face him in the Super Bowl, and down 6, it would be like that game against the ravens with Herm yelling to Lamont " no Ed Reed don't throw it"
