Landry wants 5-6 Million, which is realistic, Revis wants $16, which isn't. (Well I guess it is realistic, but I wouldn't pay it)
Landry was a stud this season; but with our current cap situation, there's no way we can afford to keep him.
And regretted the deal almost immediately. Philly in the three years before they signed Asomugha: 30-17-1 with three playoff appearances. Philly since deciding to go get a franchise CB to play alongside their existing good CB's: 12-20, no playoff appearances.
If I'm not mistake, they've also had some pretty inept defensive coordinators. Didn't they have an OL coach turn DC?
Yes but he was fired and replaced by Todd Bowles mid season. Bowles is an excellent secondary coach and even he could not get Aso playing even close to his pay level. It was a ridiculous contract that will haunt Philly until it is cleared off the books. You build a franchise around a QB, not a CB.
NO MORE DUMB CONTRACTS. Pay a player what they are worth, not what a foolish team is willing to overpay that player.
The difference is Aso was never anywhere near as good as revis. revis is far and away the best corner in the game and it's not close. Does that warrant making him the highest paid defensive player? Maybe not but bringing up Aso isn't a good comparison.
If anyone signs him to a big/long deal, they are making a mistake. Last year was a typical "play for pay" situation. As soon as he gets his contract he'll slide back into mediocrity and will probably struggle with injuries again. That Jets need to move on if he wants a long term deal. They got good return on him last year and that's nice but it should end there. Plenty of comparable safeties can be had for far less. He was a little overrated this season anyway, IMO. Too many bonehead penalties and he struggles in coverage.. I'd sign Bell before I signed him. If they give Landry a big contract but trade Revis, they might possibly be the dumbest organization around.
he got a big deal in 2010 and after battling some early injuries was back to his great self. If he's healthy he's going to be the best in the league, I don't worry about motivation w/ him. oops: my mistake, I thought you were talking about revis.
I think that would actually be a smart move, considering the cap space and the effectiveness of our passing defense last year with the same crew. You can spend 16 million for a marginal difference overall and reduced safety play, or spend 6-8 to keep the same crew as last year and you save the 6 million hit for Revis this year and a 9 million hit for next year with the risk of Revis intentionally leaving and screwing the Jets with that 2014 cap hit. Landry actually pays for himself if we trade Revis. If I were Idzik, I'd tell Revis, either fire your agent or we're trading you. No more of this bending over backwards for player demands. Revis's 2010 contract crippled the team, and a new one next year probably does the same. Realistically we can't keep that kind of money at CB without turning the offense to complete dogshit.
You may be right on the injuries part, but somehow I don't expect his play to slip. The guy has been a ferocious hitter whenever on the field. In fact, the thing I dislike most about Landry is his tendency to miss on easy INTs because he's looking to blow up the receiver.
No one will dispute that Revis is far better then Aso but the reason Aso is relevant is the numbers in his contract.
The issue is not Revis agents. He went to get the guys who fit what he wanted to do. His uncle Sean Gilbert ran circles around NFL teams also. Revis is a merc looking for his best payday, that's just what it is. There's no T-E-A-M in Revis. That's ok though, the man is a gladiator selling his future heath at the highest possible price. The Jets just can't buy into that and go anywhere with it unless they want to change the franchise name to the New York Revises and try to get the NFL to change the championship formula to whoever has the best CB wins. Even then we'd be losing to Patrick Peterson in a year or two.
He has also sucked since going to Philly. If he played at a revis level the last 2 years philly would have won a lot more games and maybe justified the contract.
Did a good job this year. He's still injury prone....let him walk for 6 mil. If Revis is back after preseason....trade him for draft picks. Unless a draft pick is a guarantee starter the Jets should start trading down to get more picks.
If anyone should want a monster contract, it's Landry. With his injury history, this may be his last chance at a big contract. You could say that about a lot of players, but Landry more than most. And he's still young enough where he can claim potential to be good for a number of years.
