He's back. The worst punter we ever had. Click on link for video http://deadspin.com/5982131/the-jet...nce-got-doinked-on-the-head-by-a-botched-snap The Jets’ New Special Teams Coach Once Got Doinked On The Head By A Botched Snap John Koblin Before there was the buttfumble, there was this, from 1993: Jets holder Louie Aguiar hilariously getting knocked in the head by a Roger Duffy snap on an attempted field goal. The ball was recovered by the Redskins. The play was so ridiculous, so Jetsie, that it elicited an "Oh my" from Dick Enberg when Dick Enberg wasn't handing those out every five seconds. This was just one sad play in a sad, ugly game. The Jets beat the Redskins, 3-0, their last win of the year before an inevitable collapse that sent them to 8-8, one win shy of making the playoffs. Aguiar, the Jets' punter, fared no better in this game: On six punts, he averaged 30.5 yards per. Two of his kicks were partially blocked. So, I guess it should surprise no one that the Jets have hired Aguiar to become their assistant special teams coach. If you can't exorcise the demons, you might as well ask them to coach. http://www.nytimes.com/1993/12/13/s...-up-storm-over-punting-and-place-kicking.html
I don't think Louie was the worst we ever had. That Wash game wasa 3-0 game, maybe the worst football game I have ever seen but the article incorrectly states Dick Enberg called the game but it was Bob Costas and Mike Ditka on the call.
Also if I remember right the Jets DID make the playoffs that year losing to Houston in the wildcard round. Their previous game or following game(can't remember) was against the Pats in which the game was just as ugly..Jets won 6-0
We played Houston the last week needing a win to get into the playoffs, we lost 24-0. The 6-0 game was a couple of weeks before the washington game. We did face Hou in a WC game but that was 2 years earlier in 1991.
With that I say 'meh.' Just because he wasn't the greatest player it doesn't mean he is/will be a bad coach. Plus he is just an assistant coach, if it doesn't work you show him the door.
That game was horrific. But this season's 7-6 win vs. Arizona was just as bad. Two truly awful football games.
I remember someone saying how " Lou was great to have around for the card games " I am not sure if he ran the card game or gave his money away,,,,make no mistake he was terrible on the field
'93 Wash was worse, at least the Stadium got a jolt of energy when McElroy came in and we saw 3 different scores.
The 1993 season was a strange one and unfortunately will be remembered for several huge blown leads, strange plays such as the snap to the head, and for the Jets having such a feeble offense toward the end of that season after routinely averaging over 24 points a game during the first part of the season. However what most people don't remember was the outstanding effort the defense brought to the table. I think the 93 Jets were the first team to post back to back road shutouts...and kept the Jets in every game until that last one....that game best known for Buddy Ryan's fists.
Keeping him as a punter ruined the JETS punting for almost 20 fukin years! I have never let this one go.... we kept the aging scrub and let go of a stud punter we drafted!
Craig Hentrich was at camp and booming punts,,,,caught my eye immediately. I could be wrong but I believe they kept Louie over this guy but then again Woody Johnson can probably kick it better than Louie and they would have cut him also,,,,,simply amazing how long Louie stuck with this team
I'm pretty sure my first memory ever of the Jets is pulling into the parking lot of Giants stadium (my father driving not me) and seeing a sign in the back window of a pickup truck that said "Louie Aguiar Sucks!". If only I know how close of a parallel that was to being a real Jets fan. That might be my first "at the game" memory, since I think the Jets beating the Dolphins to go 8-8 and lose to the Oilers happened before that...
Damn I don't remember this Lou guy. The first punter I can think of for the Jets is Brian Hanson. I believe that was back in 94, or 95.
Junc: You're right, it was Costas and Ditka. I remember the game was so bad when they broke for a commercial in the 4th quarter Costas quipped: "They're not saving the tape of this game for Canton."
My first Louie Aguiar memory was during a preseason game and the commentator reminding us that he was't the former Phillies Shortstop Luis Aguayo... because we are too stupid to be able to read and hear apparently. I could be wrong but I do believe that somehow Aguiar made a pro bowl with the Chiefs. I'm still trying to figure out WTF this guy used to do with the ball by pulling at it before he kicked. I always remember him trying to stretch it.
It wasn't a botched snap. It was a bad snap, or an early snap. The holder is the one who botches a snap, not the snapper. In conclusion: botched headline.
