He is asking for his outright release; the 49ers are not going to release him and get nothing in return. Too many teams need quarterbacks and someone will offer a trade. If the Jets want him they will have to work out a trade.

Probably, but only if I knew we were going to focus heavily on offensive skill players in the draft. Smith isn't worth much to me, especially w/that salary.

I thought i was safe to assume we were discussing players w talet beyond just age...thought that could be an assumption.

The goal is to get to a SB. Harbaugh has already concluded that Alex Smith isn't the guy to do that even with a great D and running game.

Can't see any reason to even consider Alex Smith.

I rather take my chances with Sanchez for one more year to either turn it around or complete his implosion. Just 4 years ago Alex Smith was Mark Sanchez minus 4 playoff wins. A good OC and the WCO saved his career; why can't it do the same for our down and out QB?

49'ers 34 - Jets 0, and if it weren't for Alex Smith, it would've been 48-0. Just ask Kyle Wilson.

    No thanks.

Sanchez is salvageable but he's not likely to be good enough even when salvaged and he's burnt with the fans at this point. He hasn't had a lot of help the last two seasons but he has also played like an idiot at times and a frightened idiot at that.

His upside at this point is below the level the Jets need to win a Super Bowl. That's not because the talent isn't there but everything else has gone so far south it is hard to see him recovering.

I lived through Richard Todd's resurrection, I don't need to see it again in the form of Sanchez.

No FA QB is coming here until Rex has that shit lasered off his arm. As long as Mark is here, he will start.

I don't care about giving SF a Superbowl next season.

That's what 49ers fans thought about Smith in the 2009 off-season. Now he's our savior.

exactly. It's not like the Jets are going to be competing for a championship next year unless pigs start to fly.

Just say no to Alex Smith. Even his "ressurection" he's been a mediocre QB. The only things he brings to the table is ball control and protecting the football, which is great if you have a top 5 defense, a very good O-line and a solid running game.

But he can at least hit the screen pass consistantly so that's a plus!

    This season, before getting injured:

    70.2% completions
    13 TDs only 5 INTs

    So mediocre.

That his head coach, who was a QB himself, took the first opportunity to replace him with a guy who was not proven yet.

I wonder if he would have made the move had Alex Smith not been injured...

It had to be on his mind at the time. He said afterwards that Kaepernick was the starting QB but not due to the injury. That it was a permanent change.
