You are a GM...what will you trade for Revis?

 at position that no one gives a shit about anymore. Everyone says it's a passing QB league. A good CB is vital. The reason Revis is expendable is because of the elevated play of Cromartie and Kyle Wilson, not because nobody gives a shit about the position.

I'm so sick of hearing that "you don't need good corners" and "it's all about the front 4."

People reference the Giants all the time. How did that work out for them this year? That defensive line has gotten hot at just the right time for two lucky Super Bowl runs. Their secondary has been bad for a while, and they haven't really been able to stop anyone consistently.

Osi, Tuck, JPP, Canty, Kiwanuka, Joseph, Bernard, Marvin Austin. All this capital spent on building the front and the Giants only had 4 more sacks than the Jets. Let's not forget that Super Bowl winning Giants team last year was a 9-7 team that was being OUTPLAYED BY OUR JETS, who missed the playoffs, until Cruz's 99 yard flukey TD. The got hot for 4 games in the playoffs. They didn't dominate all year.

The point is that neither extreme is the way to build a team. It's not all about the front, it's not all about the secondary. You need good players every where, at all levels of the defense. You look at some of the playoff teams and they have exactly that: Ravens - Ngata/Suggs, Lewis, Reed. 49ers - the Smiths, Willis/Bowman, Goldson/Whitner/Rogers. Seahawks - Clemons/Irvin/Mebane, Wagner, Browner/Sherman/Chancellor/Thomas.

When teams slow down the Giants front four or when their front four is banged up, the Giants' secondary gets eaten alive. And then with the Jets, even great corners like Cro and Revis will eventually get beaten when guys like Pace and Thomas are your pass rushers and can't generate consistent pressure.

It's exceptionally hard to find a true #1 CB in this league. Revis is so far and away the best at his position. Why give a player like that up? I'd do everything in my power to keep him. I'd trade Cromartie and sign Revis for 16 million. Revis is definitely twice the player Cro is. It's much easier to replace Cro and find another #2 CB than it is to find a #1 CB.

How many truly #1 shutdown CB's are there besides Revis? Bailey used to be but is past his prime. Patrick Peterson is on his way to being one. But Nnamdi? I don't think so - he was exposed big time in Philly considering the reputation he had in Oakland.

Everyone knows how great Revis is, but when was the last time he played in the Super Bowl? Huh? Oh you say never. Exactly. You can get to the Super Bowl without Darrelle Revis on your team. 12 different teams proved that since Revis entered the league.

I know it's a financial move that will most likely need to be made by the JETS (unless Revis realizes finding a way to make a career in NYC will pay promotional dividends off the field for a longtime), but the thought of parlaying Revis into a: Kyle Wilson, Dustin Keller, DeWayne Robertson, Vernon Gholston :eek:hmy:, and not to mention the years of other bad 1st rd picks this team has made over the decades is enough to make one cringe......... if this plays out, my best hope is for a proven player. The Skins lost on the Champ + pick - Portis deal, but at least it wasn't a bust, and worked out for both sides somewhat......

Champ Bailey, Nnamdi Asomugha, Darrelle Revis. That's the best CB in the game over a spread of years ranging from 2001 to 2010. None of them have played in a Super Bowl game. Not none of them have won a Super Bowl. None of them have even gotten there to try.

What do they all share in common? They're all very highly paid on the cap alongside their high level of play.

Sometimes addition by subtraction is the only way to go.

Another argument I've been making for three years.....passing is about a 65 pct play on a good day. 11 targets, 7 catches....maybe.

but is it addition if they lose one of the best players in franchise history for a bum & some cap space for marginal players?

It's not that you don't need good corners. It's that you don't need great corners and the cap punishes you for allocating space to great corners.

This isn't hard to understand. What you need at CB is a guy who won't get beat a lot. You're going to give up plays now and then with anybody you put out there. What you need is a guy who doesn't do that often.

If you're putting together a defense and your only choice is between Darrelle Revis and one of the worst corners in the league then you're kind of forced to take Revis because that bad corner is going to kill you. Revis cap hit is going to hurt a lot but the bad corner is going to kill you because he's going to get picked on a lot and beat like a drum.

What you really need though is a guy who can hold his own without getting megabucks against the cap. That's where you have a real strength at CB.

Well, if the Jets can't find a replacement corner who is at least average and if they can't find a good player with the compensation they get for Revis and if they can't take advantage of the cap space they free up to promote a more talented overall roster? Then subtraction is just subtraction, but if all of those things are true then having Revis here wouldn't matter anyway.

The Jet's records with Darrelle Revis on the field:

    2007 4-12
    2008 9-7
    2009 9-7
2010 9-5 (and losing to the Pats when he left in a game they won afterwards)
    2011 8-8
2012 2-0 (and losing to the Fins when he left in a game they won afterwards)

His presence hasn't made them a dynamic team except in 2009 and then only because Rex Ryan unleashed a horde of blitzing maniacs on NFL offenses who were not ready for that.

Obviously there have been issues with how the Jets assembled talent in Revis time on the team but that's kind of the point here.

Yes, I stand by that. You can get away with having cheaper corners in this league. It is a passing QB league and we can't pass. THAT'S why we don't win. There are plenty of teams that play worse defense than the Jets and win. Yogi Berra would tell you that you just need to score more points than the other team.

I agree with most of what you said, but Revis is not twice the player Cromartie is, nor is he twice as valuable to the team. Revis being out, barely affected our passing defense numbers at all and Cro put up Revis like numbers this year. Unfortunately, trading him is our best bet to help fix the cap situation and rebuild through the draft. I don't think there is any real choice. I think it's way more likely that Landry is on the team next year than Revis. Our new GM is smart enough to realize we have way too much money invested at CB.

That is the best answer to this point. Yes, you dont need Revis if your QB is Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Big Ben etc....if Mark is your QB you might as well pack it in.

On the subject of money, why isnt Mark taking a paycut to equal his performance? Exactly he wont, I dont blame Revis for the money aspect but at a certain point when is it enough?

Then the answer is to stop looking at superstar CB's and do everything possible to get a superstar QB. Nothing should get in the way of getting that franchise QB.

Superstar CB's are just a distraction from the primary task that every NFL team should be on every day of every year until they find their guy. Championships follow great QB's with an occasional detour to a great defense that is never sustainable.

Sanchez isn't going to take a paycut because nobody gives up guaranteed money without getting something back in return and the Jets have nothing to offer him right now. He's probably going to be a cut at some point this year and with that reality comes the fact that he hasn't got any reason to give the Jets back any of the money they guaranteed him.

    My ideal scenario:
    • Cromartie gets traded for a 2nd.
    • Revis signs for something like 12M for 5 seasons & guarantee 50M.

Unfortunately, I think Revis is gonna demand a contract bigger than Mario Williams. 16M for 5+ years. No way Jets should dish out anything like that.
