The Jets are interviewing this guy.

Popp is the general manager of the Montreal Alouettes and has had quite a bit of success up there. He's had 10 championship appearances and 4 championships as a GM - he's also coached the team. He's in the "sports hall of fame" and was the 2011 "executive of the year".

So the guy has had a ton of success in the CFL ... not sure if it will translate to the NFL. Their are probably a ton of variables between the two leagues.

    Thoughts?

Great, maybe we can try for the arena league next.

He's been interviewed by other NFL teams for GM positions. It's not like he's just some schmuck that only the Jets considered. The guy has been tremendously successful up there.

God forbid we try out a guy from the CFL. I believe he was getting serious consideration from other top level organizations earlier.

Yeah I know, I'm sorry. I'm just so disillusioned with this team.

Popp impresses me because you have to keep in mind that the guy has to have a very good eye for under the radar type guys because that is what the CFL is all about.

He has been the GM for a very long time and the Alouettes are a very good team almost every year because of the keen eye that Popp has for re-tread players.

People got to understand that it is very hard to stay good in the CFL as a team because the talent pool is so low, so for Popp to keep his team constantly flowing around the top is impressive to me.

If he can find a lot of those good players that have been shoved to the CFL because they weren't exactly good enough in the NFL, I think he could absolutely have success in the NFL, drafting players and building a teams roster.

I think instead of people just looking at the fact that he is from the CFL and actually researching the guy a little bit, they might feel a bit impressed too.

I mean if you're looking for a "breath of fresh air" this guy certainly will bring that to the table. I just question whether his knowledge will translate.

As long as the guy we hire can do the job and do it well I do not care where we find him,,,,,,,,,,I just do not want a figure head or yes man that is just going to carry the title of GM ! I would rather a guy that has done it before and a guy that many teams have an interest in .

Players like Cameron Wake come from the CFL. It's absolutely worth the look. Not a bad idea.

I think the breath of fresh air I'd like to see the Jets go with would be a candidate who works within the NFL. I know you can't have it all, but a good talent evaluator/cap manager would be nice. Certainly someone not previously involved with the Jets in any way.

This guy could be great, but as you said, the concern would be whether his knowledge translates.

I think he interviewed for the Indy job last year and was supposedly the runner up.

This would be the type of move where if NE or the Giants made it they'd be hailed for being trend setters and ahead of the curve but if we made it we'd be bashed and laughed at for hiring a CFL guy.

    Jim Poop? Really? That's horseshit.

*The above was intended as a lame joke by poster and should not be considered a serious response or opinion of said poster. Poster has no knowledge of Mr. Popp's qualifications for the position of Jets General Manager and was merely trying to have some fun with a name that sounded a lot like Poop. Please do not judge poster and take into account that poster avoided making fun of those who believe Poop would be "a breath of fresh air".

I actually wouldn't mind this hire.

But if we made a hire from the CFL, the media might physically explode.

If college recruting can translate to the NFL so can CFL talent assessment.

Yeah, but if he maintains his Canadian citizenship the team could save a boatload on his insurance costs ;)
