I can't remember what triggered Mangini's exit but he definitely was not media friendly, uncommunicative and on the whole not very likeable. Rex is the opposite, and in doing so he must have won over Woody. He also is a players coach. If the majority players ever turn against you and stop playing hard, you're done. So he has been given the benefit of the doubt. From my own personal experience it's better to be liked than to be right. It's not fair but that's life for you.

the jury is still out on Rex for certain. he has had two very successful seasons (and anyone claiming that making it to the AFCCG does not equate to a successful season knows absolutely nothing) and two poor seasons. the two poor seasons don't have more weight than the two successful seasons, so it is hardly unreasonable to give him the tie breaker season next year to see whether the first two were a fluke or the last two.

unless you are absolutely certain he is a bad coach, and none of the detractors can do so, he has earned another season. that has nothing to do with continuity.

I think that's at least 3rd on the list behind "he doesn't pick the groceries"-type arguments, and the "winning teams don't rebuild every 3-4 years".

The reality is that with the cap the way it is and no real help coming from the QB position, who the hell cares if the defense takes a step back next year? I think most of us expect that the Jets will be about 8-8 at BEST and that's with some help from the offense and the defense not taking a step back. On first glance the schedule is pretty tough, so a 6-10 repeat may not be out of the question as a best case either. It is entirely possible that they Jets could sink to 5-11 or 4-12.

I don't see much hope for next year, but I am ok with that.

The problem with keeping Rex, to me, is that the Jets are doing it to save money so they don't have to pay him for TWO years instead of one. It's almost a foregone conclusion that he's out if he doesn't make the playoffs, and what realistic chance is there that it will happen?

So if your coach isn't ready for primetime as a head coach by many accounts, and the only thing he brings to the table is a good defense but you know he's out anyway after next year unless he pulls a miracle, why wait???

    Typical Jets logic.

The problem with this is that none of the supporters can prove he IS a good coach either. For every argument supporters make, detractors can twist it to the opposite, and vice versa.

plenty of good coaches, and even some great ones, have had 6 win seasons. but how many bad coaches have made it to the conference championship game, nevertheless made it twice?

you ignore the evidence that sides with him being good, but that doesn't equate to nobody pointing it out.

I can think of a lot of reasons to wait. First off the Jets may well be able to salvage the 46 even without Rex if they have a year to get the defensive staff minus Pettine up to speed. Hopefully Dennis Thurman has the DC role this year and the Jets can retain him in the event that Rex is fired.

Secondly, if Rex was as heavily involved in drafting Quinton Coples as he appears to have been I'd really prefer he was coaching him next year. The Jets can't afford to have another 1st round pick bomb out because nobody knows what the heck is going on around him.

I'm thinking it's going to take a lot of work to make Wilkerson and Coples both great in the same defense. They don't really fit together in a 3-4 or a 4-3.

I never said anything about his record. I think he's in over his head as a head coach based on his game decisions, his lack of any kind of common sense when to comes to the media, the fact that the team is often unprepared and comes out flat - it's a long list of stuff that isn't related to the record directly.

I'm not ignoring evidence - I'm simply telling you why I think he should go. If he was trending upwards and I was saying this, then I could see you (and others) saying I'm ignoring the good. The fact of the matter is, he started out good and, figuratively, has crashed and burned since then.

So what's the real Rex Ryan as a head coach? The guy who started out strong or the guy who seemingly has no handle on what he's doing?

Our defense doesn't suck because of Rex! Mangina sucked at every aspect of coaching! He'll, he isn't even a good commentator. All his hype on this board came from his days around Belichek, and he even sucked as defensive coordinator under Bills wing. Rex is at least way above Eric so stop any nonsense in regards. Rex isn't an offensive guy as coach we all agree, but it isn't his fault that our offense sucked. I don't care who he hired as o coordinator, it isn't his fault. We hired him and accepted him knowing he was d minded so why the change all of a sudden? The Sancho defenders just want Rex lynched, cause he screwed our season being the worst Qb ever! If we get an o guru, and a Qb we will compete at a high level again!

I just thought of something (I actually read it somewhere else):

People says Rex knows shit about offense. That's odd to say since he's so good at defense. Wouldn't that mean that he knows about most opposing team's offenses since his defenses are always in the top 10?

those were the qualities I loved most about Mangini, him not having anything to say to the media was great for me. Let the team speak for you with it's play on the field. I am sure Brett Favre tanking on us had a lot to do with his departure, but seeing the type of person he is, I doubt he wanted Favre. I imagine that was the owner again stepping in and getting involved in football moves when he shouldn't. Mangini was similar to Coughlin to me. Strick no nonsense, and was looking for cerebral players who were mature enough to commit to a system. Ala a military training style brainwashing. He obviously wasn't given a chance to succeed because he was not here to have drinks with the media. The team was well on it's way to establishing a foundation for long term success when the the owner screwed us over with Ryan and several quick fix options that are now proving to handicap our future.

We went 1-5 to end that season right? We didn't adjust our offensive gameplan due to the weather in games or due to Favre's lack of production/injury. The only game we did manage to win was a gift from Buffalo who fumbled it away to us. The collapse was pretty pretty bad.

Now looking back, firing Mangini forced the new regime, Rex's to choose a QB in a QB weak draft. Something that we need to avoid doing this offseason interestingly enough

When was the last time we had a HC who made adjustments on offense or who knew how to run a 2 minute drill / utilize timeouts properly or knew how to use challenges or make in game adjustments ? Was it Weeb ? Parcels? Because Rex can't do it, Mangini was soso and Herm was horrible / Dick Curl could not help him,,,,,,,the list is long

Baahahahaha. Everything I said is factual and can be verified. What you say cannot be. That's all that matters in this conversation. It's obvious you don't care about wins, win%, making the playoffs or anything else that directly translates to the field. Pittsburgh DID execute better. Do you deny that? Like I said, everything is verifiable and accurate while you just speculate and blame it on things like preparation while completely ignoring things like halftime adjustments. Your excuses are pitiful and laughable, but we'll keep it at that.

So Broom, tell me why you think the GM of General Electric should step down?

Broom: Well he went on vacation during the same month when sales were the lowest. He was wrong in predicting increased profits this year, and showed a downward trend this year. He also got a tattoo on his leg and lives in PENNSYLVANIA! I mean who wants a guy like that?

I should note that the numbers say General Electric has had much success under him and became a billion dollar corporation. The company has been more successful under his watch than anyone else in the history of the company.

Broom: I don't care about the numbers. Only 1 year matters and that's this year. Profits were down. He should be fired. The guy lives in Pennsylvania and enjoys deviant classic rock music. His favorite TV show is Dexter!!!! How can you trust him? He doesn't hold his management staff accountable! His employees don't respect him and he eats Taco Bell!

He fired somebody a few weeks ago for falsifying their time sheets? What do you mean he doesn't hold staff accountable and they don't respect him?

Broom: Sure that action might indicate that, and I don't have evidence, but I've watched the reports every quarter!!! Anonymous sources say he doesn't hold anybody accountable!!!!

What is it that you think Rex did to contribute to any victories?

Benching Sanchez for McElroy won us the Cardinals game. I'm pretty confident in that. What did he contribute to the losses?

The biggest reason to keep Rex Ryan that comes to MY mind is that I'm frankly not interested in seeing some moderately successful coordinator getting his first head coaching gig in New York and then needing to "give him time." Again. On the other hand, if I heard the name of a coach with head coaching success and an interest in the job, I could easily be convinced that it's time for a change. But this all seems so familiar. Again.

In the end, it may be that this morning's NYPost article about ripping mad PSL owners looking to challenge the team has more to say about Rex's future with the team than anything else.

    You're a pisser.

You and I went back and forth about benching Sanchez ...week 9 or thereabouts.

You were adamant that Sanchez should remain the starter.

Care to admit now that you were wrong?

I supported Sanchez mainly because of our contract obligations. The original plan was for him to stay our QB next year, so my thing was about getting him more snaps and chemistry with the young receivers. More recently it was about using his benching as motivation. Obviously that plan changed between then and now. At least I think it did, since we took him out of the lineup as soon as we were eliminated from the playoffs. When we were discussing this, we still had a shot at making the playoffs, and Rex had only benched Sanchez once. Either way our discussion back then has nothing to do with what we're talking about now, which is the coach. I feel Rex did the right thing with Sanchez, considering the circumstances.

This was near the end of October. He had not been benched yet, but the regression was in full effect. And yes, we're talking about the coach. He's the guy that should have sat Sanchez for the good of everyone involved.

Now Sanchez is damaged goods. His trade value is nil. His confidence is shot. His game is gone. There's your chemistry.

Rex Ryan has regressed right along with Sanchez.

hahaha, Barcs admit he's wrong? I can almost guarantee that his response to you will have nothing to do with what you actually said and will paint a picture of you as an irrational person.

He's gotta be a lawyer, this guy.
