Perception is reality with most people who follow sports. Our beat writers seem to cater to other fans moreso than our own. I wouldn't expect a Giants or Pats fan to be up to speed about our GM interviews and whatnot. However, guys like Cimini, Mehters, Myers, etc...write articles that use the word 'circus' over and over and over again to cater to those other fans. I know the team sucks right now, however I'd rather look at articles that assess that and discusses how one can fix it. Instead, it's fucking 'circus' over and over. Some good questions the press COULD ask: Rex, for the last two seasons, your team has lost the final three games to close out the season. Why is that the case? Rex, how have your rookies (notably Hill) progressed this year so far, and what can be done to bring them more up to speed? Rex, have you felt that your defense has stepped up without Revis around? Instead, it will be: REX, SHOW US YOUR TATTOO REX, WHY DO YOU HATE TEBOW. REX, WHY DO YOU HAVE A FOOT FETISH REX, WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE
It's curious how the same media that absolutely loves Rex and all the talking points he routinely gives them seem to be trying to take him down. If they polled beat writers, they would vote 'Covering the Jets' as the best gig they could possibly dream of. Never a dull moment. Even the 'Mr Dull Himself Mangini' regime was loaded with drama with spy gate and all. Seems like the media is trying the kill off the best thing they ever had.
why would they ask that when he never answers those questions... he will say again and then tell us the defense played well and mark gives us the best chance to win and then say again.... again. now that they have heard that for a year and a half why would they even bother to set themselves up to hear it all over again? at this point why not grill him on some stupid shit, they probably think its fun to watch him squirm after all the bullshit he has fed them over the past few years. again...
^^^ All of the above plus you don't hear BB saying "We're going to kick their ass" and "we're going to the Superbowl." RR brought the media on himself... begged for it. You can't blame the media for covering the Jets Clown Show.
The media has been incredibly unprofessional and incredibly consistent. The main problem is that there are two audiences for their yellow journalism; fans of the jets and fans of other teams who believe all the negativity and take it all as gospel. As Jets fans we follow the team and know what's bullshit when we hear it, others don't. My biggest fear however, is that the team will let the media's perception affect their desicions. After all, the media loves to pretend they represent US (when it's mostly fans of other teams that eat their shit up) I think as fans we owe it to the team to rebel agaisnt the media and let these hacks know we don't stand for their BS. I think we should start a petition agaisnt the media and spread it to the others jets' sites. If we succed in getting the attention of the team or media we could Put an end to this terrible coverage or at least bring attention to how terrible it is. My account can't start threads but somebody should start a thread on this petition.
the problem is not the media here, it is the Jets. lose the ass clownery, get serious and start focusing on football. Then, win football games consistently, and convincingly. Problem solved.
I agree with the OP. I love how Francessa started his anti-Jets campaign immediately after they stopped going on his show because of their ESPN affiliation. He never admitted to this being the reason but it was so obvious and to me it made him look like an amatuer. Now you got all the beat writers (Cimini, Canzanarro, etc.) and radio people with their panties in a bunch because the Jets decided to postpone their end-of-year press conference. They tried to get the Jets fined or whatever and complained to the NFL. They can't write an artice to save their asses so they just whine about how "unprofessional" and "cowardly" the Jets are...and that why they are so unsuccessful, and so on. It's a joke.
But we won the most games that year. Rex can't have a little fun with his brother coming to town? That's REALLY the problem with the team, RIGHT? Actually that picture is pretty funny. You can tell they cut out the Browns logos from paper and taped them to the shirt and hat!
Rex can act like a whackyass and have all the fun he wants- it's just that when you essentially beg for media attention in the most unprofessional manner possible for a couple of years, it is not then reasonable to expect the media to then stop paying that attention all of a sudden.
It's not about the media stopping paying attention. It's about them stopping making up half-cooked stories and running front page for 2 days with crap irrelevant to the team's future. They are supposed to report news, not create it.
I wish I still retained some of this youthful optimism... Unfortunately, in my experience, shit like this doesn't work.
Stop blaming the media for what our NYJ have become. If it appears they're a soap opera, it's because they ARE a soap opera. The only agenda in this scenario is the agenda imposed by owner Woody Johnson who has wants the attention... Jets fans shouldn't ignore reality and deflect blame to defend the team they love.. They should become angry at those who created this reality.
I totally agree that the media has conducted itself in an unprofessional manner, but of course, that is nothing new. The modern American media is one of the most dishonest, disreputable, and spineless institutions in world history. Having said all of that, Rex's loud-mouthed, clownish persona is still the root cause. With a prototypical, tight-lipped coach, the image of the team would be entirely different. We would still be getting killed in the media (and deservedly so), but the criticisms would be predominately based on what actually occurred on the field (as it obviously should be).
There are 2 sides to this coin. The team clearly gives inside information to reporters that give them good press and retaliate against reporters who don't. It's not easy to be objective when you are covering an institution like a team. Objectivity isn't always going to get you through the front door. As unprofessional as fat bastard is to the Jets, it was equally unprofessional for the Circus to exclude him.
