You are really going to use THAT game as the basis of your argument? Sanchez only completed 12 passes, threw for only 100 yards and had a Quarterback rating of 60 that day.... It's a miracle the Jets won that game - and they won it with great defensive play and a solid running game. If the Jets had only 60 yards rushing like the Chargers did that game, they would've lost by 20 points... Stats don't tell the whole story but its pretty obvious to everyone who watched that game that Rivers played against a much better defense that day... Not to mention the 2009 and 2010 Sanchez is long gone. He's a shell of his former self and that former self wasn't that good anyway. I can't believe you are even making this argument. Rivers is not great but he's at least shown he's an above average NFL QB, something Sanchez never was and is far, far away from now. As for them choking in the playoffs? I think it had more to do with being severely out-coached and it didn't help that his teammates - namely LaDainian Tomlinson, let him down in the big games..
Ed Werder @Edwerderespn If Norv Turner to Dallas as OC doesn't happen it could be because he wants his own assistants coaches rather than inheriting staff. #Cowboys
I know you are a better fan than to just look at boxscores. He completed 3 huge 3rd downs, 1 that set up a FG, 1 that set up the punt that pinned SD inside their 5 where Rivers would throw the game changing INT and 1 on the TD after the INT where he bought time w/ his legs and made a tremendous throw on the run to Keller to give us the lead. If any of those 3 plays don't happen we likely don't win. Here's the dangeorus thing about looking at boxscors and not watching games(or remembering what you watched). You realize we were up most of the 4th qtr and ran it b/c of that while SD was trailing and had to throw. after we took the 17-7 lead in the 4th here are the plays that took place: NYJ: 8 runs, 0 passes SD: 12 passes, 1 run(QB sneak for TD) so up until that point Rivers had 28 pass attempts, sanchez 23 The circumstances of the game dictated SD had to stop running. we weren't running great all game long but we never abandoned it. Prior to Greene's long TD run he had 16 carries for 59 yds, 3.6 YPC. Jones for the game had 14 carries for 41 yds(2.9) so let's end this myth that we ran ont hem all game, our run game wasn't great outside of the 1 run. Rivers is a great fantasy QB which fools most fans, he is a terrible big game QB which means more than meaningless fantasy #s
hard to really give credit to Sanchez for completing a 3rd down pass where the end result was a punt followed by an opposing QB throwing an INT. of course Sanchez started that game going 3 and out 4 straight times and scored 0 first half points. the fg drive to start the 2nd half Sanchez went 1-3 for 4 yards and did not convert the 3rd and 5. He was benefited by a pass interference call on Jammer. He then got intercepted and got bailed out by a fluke INT by Revis, off VJ's butt. Then he completed that one 3rd down pass to set up a punt that you mentioned which set up the INT by Rivers, but again, i wouldnt give Sanchez credit for that. Regardless Norv is considered an offensive genius, but there were only 2 teams behind the jets this year in total offense by yards. One of those teams was the chargers. Rivers has had just 2 game winning 4th quarter drive since the 2009 season. He throws a lot of INTs and fumbles a lot in those situations. Do you guys not remember the 4th quarter of the game last year? the throw behind VJ where Revis got the INT, the throw right to Wilson to set up the final field goal? The final drive by the chargers where Rivers threw the ball out of bounds on 4th down and then asked what down it was? You don't want Rivers, you don't want Sanchez. I'd look at Matt Flynn. He may have some upside.
It was a HUGE play in the game on a great pass. if not there's no way we pin SD deep and the game completely changes. Not all big plays are 60 yd TD passes, many people fail to grasp this. we had a very conservative game plan, it was a low scoring game. If SD was scoring and we kept going 3 and out it would have been a problem. a PI which was the proper call, if not for the PI the pass is completed. after the lone mistake Sanchez made, Rivers threw that fluke INT where the best Corner in the game had Jackson blanketed and Rivers threw it up for grabs. Sanchez played much better than his #s, it's hard to see for most fans.
you can call any play of any game a huge play, especially in hindsight. The punter still has to make that kick and the opposing QB still has to make that throw (which was either the worst throw in football or a miscommunication by VJ or Gates). Sanchez did just fine that game and made that 1 mistake. He completed 12 passes. The game was called conservative. Not his fault, that was the gameplan. but that game was definitely lost by the chargers. So many mistakes starting with the opening drive with a snap over Rivers head, followed by a delay of game. 2nd drive, delay of game followed by a missed 36 yard field goal (a kick he hadnt missed in 2 years). 3rd drive, false start on 2nd and 10, next play, get 11. end up 4th and 4, get an unnecessary roughness call on the punt downed deep in jets territory. re-kick gives better field position. Then of course the awful INT deep in the chargers own end. The headbutt by Phillips to set up first and goal. The missed FG to cut the lead. Cromartie giving up on the Greene td run. Sanchez played fine. I wouldnt say he was as much a determining factor as Dilfer was back in the day. The defense and charger boneheaded mistakes won the game for the Jets that day.
w/o that 3rd down and 10 conversion we are at our 23 and no chance to pin SD deep. Our QB played better than their QB.
sure, any time there is a 3rd down conversion it alters the game in some way. In this case that 3rd and 10 completion turned out to be big because it set up a punt later on in the drive. Of course also using hindsight, the 3rd and 3 incompletion from the jets 45 yard line was also a HUGE play. Without it there is no punt and then no INT and then no TD for the jets.
Doesn't matter what happened in 09 or 10 anymore. We can't get to the fuckin playoffs with Sanchez at QB.
sure we can, he just needs help. we almost made it in '11 w/ poor talent around him but that talent looks like HOF talent compared to what he had this year.
The problem I see with Sanchez is that he regressed in areas where talent around him isn't the main reason why. His ball security was atrocious. Putting two hands on the ball is something you have to do. Being able to feel the pressure is another thing. Yes the reason he was getting hit was due to WR not getting open, but put 2 hands on the ball. He still made poor decisions and locked onto receivers. You could say that is partly because he doesn't trust his receivers, but at the same time he would have wide open receivers crossing the field and missed them. He would throw into triple coverage like in TEN that has nothing to with lack of talent. That was just not knowing the game situation and deciding where he was throwing no matter what. These were problems he kind of erased in his second and into part of his 3rd year. They creeped up at the end of his 3rd year and came into full blown problems in his 4th year. Sometimes you can bring a QB back after this, but Sanchez's confidence just looked shot and that;s hard to get back.
It's the clumsiness with the ball and lack of peripheral that I just can't get over. You can't ignore those two crucial flaws in his game, which seem to have gotten worse. I was patient with Sanchez, I defended him a lot. Time is up, the Ass-Fumble did it for me.
obviously history has shown that Rivers overall is the better QB. But his problems were practically identical to the problems that Sanchez was having. He was hit and sacked often enough he became shell shocked and even with a clean pocket and plenty of time would get happy feet and make poor choices or miss wide open receivers. Of course the potential of Rivers is more confidence inspiring than Sanchez, but I would doubt that the Chargers would get rid of Rivers. With no decent QB option in the draft, I doubt a new coach would want to go into training camp with Mark Sanchez and Charlie Whitehurst vying for the starting QB job.
Trust me, I don't want to give up resources for Rivers. I think his best days are behind him. Would I rather Rivers starting for us next year than Sanchez, absolutely, but I can't flip a switch and just have the QBs flip spots. I also agree that Chargers don't want to give up Rivers.
I agree w/ you but those areas that can be worked on, for me he's shown too many positives through 4 years to give up on a young QB already. It's hard to win in this league, it's even harder to win in janury, we have a QB we know we can win in January w/.
Good comparison, they are exactly the same, I remmeber all thsoe winning seasons in Houston, all the playoff wins, all the big plays late in games to help Houston win. They are the same player
The problem is, the last two seasons Sanchez hasn't helped us get to January. It could be argued he has held us back from getting to January last season and this season. It sucks that he regressed so badly. His fundamentals shouldn't have regressed, but they did. Also, the confidence thing is worrisome. I hope Sanchez does well, but it looks like his confidence is shot and that's tough to get back
I wasn't going to respond to you anymore but this was just over the top. Are you honestly that dense that you think I'm saying they're the same player? Think about it a little harder in the context in which it was posted and try again.
