I think you're absolutely right, which is what makes this all so strange. If you think Tebow can play in your offense, you play him, since Sanchez is costing you the season. If you think Tebow can't play you activate McElroy for the same reason. If you think Tebow can be effective in these spurts he gets, you design actual plays to take advantage of that. What you don't do is exactly what they've done - make it pretty much impossible for either Tebow or McElroy to possibly save the season. If Rex has done it voluntarily he's just not cut out to be a head coach; if he's been forced to do it by Tannenbaum that's a perfect reason to fire Tannenbaum. If he was forced to do it by Johnson it's hopeless.
Personally, I think Tebow being backup was forced on by Tannenbaum. Woody might have wanted Tebow, but wasn't it leaked that he wanted GMac to start against Jacksonville? Woody may not have much football acumen, but I think even he realizes that Sanchez is done and the controversy Tebow brings is not worth starting him...
Tebow is not starting, be ause he has more trade value being hidden. Secondarily, this is the axe over Sparano. Say, hello Norv, and a second round pick.
Wow talk about skimming the truth out of a PC. Dressed 6 WR's because Clyde Gates wasn't cleared until late, and Edwards had a hammy, new to the system. He completely was trying to deflect the pressure of why we brought him in, and he never said that he was a good competitor and that is why he won't start. He believes that McElroy is the best for the Jets right now (almost a direct quote) If you are going to recap, please don't do it to fit an agenda.
Pretty devastating but dead on. I'm hoping that Woody clears up the mystery surrounding Tebow and then takes accountability for it if it really was on him. Having your results is part of learning from them and the Tebow/Jets story is going to leak eventually no matter what happens. As you say if Rex was dressing him but not playing him much of his own volition, well that's a bad situation given the way the Jets season devolved. The other two scenarios you describe are also true although Woody's way back in that situation is just to own up to it in a way that makes it clear he learned from the fiasco and is not likely to repeat it again. This is a bad place to do this but I'll put it here anyway. Woody Johnson has been the Jets owner for 13 years now counting the 2000 Parcells caretaker season. He has hired 3 head coaches in that time and all 3 of them have made the playoffs. That's not the record of a hopeless Dan Snyder case. It's a record that Jerry Jones would be proud to have. The idea that what ails the Jets right now is primarily Woody's fault just isn't borne out by the record of what has happened during his ownership. He's certainly at fault to some extent. The owner is the most important piece of the puzzle in any NFL franchise. However if he was really a hopeless promoter of himself and the franchise at the expense of actual results the Jets record over the period of his ownership would be much worse than it is and the guys who coached for him would not have had the opportunity to make the playoffs the way they have.
Rex is a fucking Bufoon. Time for a new coach that can be a motivator and a realistic evaluator of all 3 facets of the team.
Rex never answers any damn questions. Maybe he wants Mac over Tebow because he knows if Tebow lights it up the last 2 weeks, the media and fans will be all over him, asking him why he didn't put Tebow in sooner. If Mac struggles, it actually makes Rex look better because he can say, "hey, I told you Mark gave us the best chance to win." The man is a liar and dissembler who has no remaining shred of credibility.
Rex was intent on playing Sanchez, that is why McElroy did not suit up -- he wasn't needed. how many times was Sanchez benched in favor of Tebow? a big fat zero. for Rex, he never intended to bench Sanchez, so Tebow suiting up is completely irrelevant. Rex brought in Tebow to run some gimmick plays every once in a while simply because he was handed a high profile player and had to do something with him every once and while, likely to appease his boss so he can say "I tried." but he was never a threat to be the QB, and the Jets never attempted to develop an option offense for him to run. so why would they try to create an entirely new offense just for the last two games of the season rather than see what McElroy can do in the existing system and if he is better than Sanchez? whether Tebow can run an option system is irrelevant, and the wins it may generate equally so if the Jets do not sticking with it next year.
Did he make any mention of trying to catch a chicken when he was a kid? If so, I'm guessing there isn't a chicken alive that Rex couldn't catch...
One of the best posts I've read on the whole QB drama. Analysis of Rex vs. Tanny vs. Woody is perfect.
It's just possible they traded for him and where absolutely shocked at how bad he actually is. Maybe they had no confidence in Mcelroy so they kept the roster spot for Tebow who can play special teams knowing that neither guy was an option if Sanchez went down. It's just possible that as much as we see Sanchez sucking on Sunday he is still miles better then Tebow and Mcelroy and the coaches see it all week.
i like this theory the best. someone like rex couldn't take the leap of faith to put tim in based on what he saw in practice. denver had it a little easier when they were 1-4 since the worst that could happen was they ended up winning the suck for luck sweepstaks
To be honest, that's pretty much what I was assuming for the first half of the season (although I still find it hard to believe that they couldn't come up with something better for Tebow all year). But I don't see how we can still think that after the game against Arizona - it seems to me that McElroy provided more than enough evidence then that he can conduct an NFL offense without the comically awful plays Sanchez was making game after game. I can't think of a single good reason that he wasn't out there the next two games, or even available.
I can't listen to Rex at all. All I want to do is punch him in the face. I don't know who's worse, Rex or Tanny?
Now, I love ripping on the Jets just as much and that's guy. Actually even more than the next guy. But the reason why he sounds at loss for words, is because there are no words that he can say publicly on the radio. Hes not gunna come out and bash Sanchez and say he sucks. and as far as McElroy, the fact is Tebow was only the "#2" quarterback for the Jets because of the value he brought in other areas then actually playing quarterback like as a fake punt guy and as a wildcat quarterback. They have probably looked at Tebow as the #3 quarterback for quite a while in regards to playing the position full-time. But of course he's not going to come out and say negative things about Tim Tebow publicly either. So he's just got to do a song and dance and search for words that he can say that wouldn't cause a PR nightmare. Trying to "coach speak" as best as he can...
It's really not that strange or mysterious at all. McElroy's active spot on gamedays would contribute nothing all season unless Sanchez got hurt. Meanwhile, Tebow could pickup fake punts and contribute in short yardage situations, and possibly more, with that same roster spot. If Sanchez got hurt in a game, they were willing to risk that and having to finish a game in the spread option in order to get more production from that roster spot.
