This is more a question about the rule than anything else, but as multiple people have reported, the new CBA allows for each team to designate 2 players as "June 1 players" which means if they are cut before June 1, the cap hit for the next season is reduced. I searched and couldn't find the answer, but maybe it's been posted and I missed it...

What would our actual cap hit be if we cut Sanchez before June 1? And as a follow up (depending on the cap hit), would you rather eat the money or hold on to him and try to trade him with the risk of having to keep him and pay him his full amount?

Edit: Costello says the hit would still be over $12 mil, but I don't exactly trust anyone from the NY Post.

The cap hit would be somewhere around 17 million dollars, I believe.

I think the cap hit if he's cut is only around 8.3 million. That's the guaranteed money for 2013. I think the $17 million is the salary if he's kept (and yes, would go against the cap if he's not cut).

This is what I'm not sure of. Is the cap hit reduced off the $8.3 million or is it reduced off the $17 million? Costello says the latter, but again, it's the NY Post.

Instead of a $17 million cap hit, it would drop to $12 million.

It gets confusing between cap hit, salary, bonuses, guaranteed money, front loaded, back loaded................ It's way too much however they figure it.

I think any guaranteed money over the course of his contract has to be "paid off" when he is cut. So if they guaranteed him 5 mil this year, 6 mil next and 3 the year after, that is a 14 mil cap hit if he is cut. I don't think we have to give him the money, but it counts toward our cap...but I'm not sure.

Sanchez total cap hit if cut is around 17 mil. Pretty sure the "June 1" cut just allows the cap hit to be over two years instead of being accelerated

I would cut him immedietly. id rather take the17 million and eat it all in 2013, which at best is an 8-8 season with all the change and turnover we will have as opposed to spreading it out over 2 years and taking a smaller hit in 2014.

I want as much cap room as possible in 2014. get rid of all the dead weight this year, and look to rebuild for 2014, not retool for 2013.

His hit is 13 mil in 2013 and 4 mil in 2014. My understanding is if he is cut prior to June 1, the hit is absorbed in totality in 2013.

Wait one... don't we have extra cap room this year? Can't we restructure and pay him off now for next year? :)

The hit is $8+ Mill in 2013 and 4+ mill in 2014. I have never heard of the June 1 player rule, but I will research it.

They should be able to make a deal with him. Instead of paying him 8 million and having him go to camp and sit on the bench, they can give him 5 million and he can leave and sign somewhere else for more if he can get it. But either way, for the 5 million he never has to show up for work with the jets again.

Nkt sure why he would agree to payout. Jets owe him the money whether he plays or not.

They'll try to re negotiate his contract and keep him as a higher priced backup Sanchez knows he's God awful and also knows his open market value is basically nill so he'll be a good soldier just to stay in NY and go clubbing every night.

No teams cant adjust future cap hits to the current year when they may have space.

    You are wrong.

    http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html

His salary due is 8.25, his cap number is 12.8, but the cap number jumps to 17.1 if he is cut or traded.

I read somewhere that if he is cut after June 1st the cap hit drops back down to 12.8 but I'm not sure how accurate that info is.

would be great if he would restructure somehow but i have no idea what the rules are for that and would he and his agent go for that.

assuming a change of scenery is on the table, they just might.

So can't they just sign someone - so they don't have space?

I'm really just asking because you seem more knowledgeable about this than me.
