if the Cheifs win there was clearly no reason not to play, since they were capable of doing so despite the suicide. and if the Panthers win, it would be hard to argue that they did so because the Chiefs were too upset to perform considering they have only 1 win to begin with and aren't very good.

the Chiefs are already the worst team in the league. should the league really postpone the game because they are concerned with the Chiefs having an advantage of getting a higher draft pick than the Jaguars or Eagles when they are already in a position to do so anyways? that is just a silly concern.

I remember being sicken by people reaction to what Chris Benoit did. People were so sympathetic towards him. Coming up with conspiracy theories. It was crazy. I found it so weird. He was a monster. Jovan Belcher was a monster. He get's no rip from me. He get's no sympathy from me. He's a murderer.

I'm more sympathetic toward the people who were close to him and had no idea this was coming than I am to Belcher himself.

Obviously, the most sympathy goes with the woman and her family. R.I.P. Kassandra Perkins

Or perhaps both of those guys took a shot too many to the head and it drove them insane. Unfortunately, shit like this happens, seemingly more often with pro athletes. I do think suicide is a cowards way out and that the crimes are heinous, but questioning the mental health / stability of the individual is legitimate. It's not being sympathetic, it's being realistic. When you look the people's lives as a whole, that one moment of rage / insanity is very often not the person they once were. Difficult situation, the real victims are the families, here, especially the child that lost both parents.

And to you, this sounds like the actions of a sane person? I'm interested in how far he would need to go to be considered mentally unstable in your book.

Sad really sad. Is there a donation fund for the kid? Find one and get me a link.

To the debate about his mental problems, let me just raise this and get the fuck out of this thread....

To assume people have ethical standards and have control over those standards, we must first assume that people have free will.

There was this really interesting book that just came out by somebody I can't remember the name of titled "Free Will" it argues that essentially if you were replaced with Javon Belcher... atom for atom, environment for environment, and upbringing for upbringing... you would do the same thing, because those are the three things that dictates what a human being is. We're all products of our brain chemistry and environment. When you call this guy a monster you hit the nail on the head. Monsters can't not be monsters. So you really can't be outraged. Well I guess you can, because none of us really have free will and because of that you will be outraged simply because it's your nature.

Unless of course you believe in nueroplasticity and cognitive therapy than all that goes out the window.

It's an interesting read, and an interesting concept. We spent a lot of time on it in my philosophy class. If anybody really cares I'll go fish it out of my manpurse and let you know the author's name. But really just search "Free Will" in Amazon. You'll find it.

Again, this is very sad. No matter what you believe.

Too soon, but I did laugh.

Nothing was on there, just Tamba Hali listed as Questionable because he wants to come to New York.

whether someone is insane is not dictated by whether they commit heinous acts. sociopaths can be sane, and commit far more brutal acts of violence than this.

First of I want to say this is a tragic incident. These type of acts are becoming more and more common. I have not read every post in this thread so I cannot directly comment towards any of you.

IMO the NFL and sports media should be ashamed of themselves. The true victim here is the girl who was shot and murdered. It is a tragic ending for Belcher as well, however, his suicide death does not give him my sympathy. I have yet to hear anyone in sports media address the girl or her family. They have a baby who will have to grow up without parents. The entire situation is tragic, but all I seem to hear in sports media and from the NFL is how sorry they are for Belcher, which shows neglect on their part.

    sociopath

    noun, Psychiatry.
a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

Nah, sociopaths aren't insane, just psychopathic. The guy tried to post it as if him shooting her 9 times somehow proved he was not insane. So, if he only shot her once or twice he'd be less sane, or what? It's just not a very compelling argument, that's all. My point was that it's not unreasonable to question the sanity of somebody who pulls an act like this. Some people were arguing that it's being too sympathetic to even mention.

that's not true at all, unless you are making up your own fantasy definition of insanity. your own post would possibly be indicative of insanity -- an inability to distinguish fantasy (your definition of sociopath) and reality (the actual definition of sociopath). the issue would be whether it is caused by mental illness or not.

Legal definition of insanity: 1) mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior.

sociopathic behavior is anti-social behavior, not a mental illness. Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is described by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fourth edition (DSM-IV-TR), as an Axis II personality disorder characterized by "...a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood."

that isn't particularly caused by mental illness and an inability to tell fantasy from reality, or an uncontrollable impulse behavior. anti-social behavior can be deliberate and planned, hence why not all acts of violence are rationalized as acts of insanity.

Oh my bad, it's a personality disorder, not a mental disorder. Personality has nothing to do with the brain or sanity. Psychopaths are sane and rational. I'm not saying you have to be bat shit insane to commit heinous acts, there are obviously different levels of insanity. I'm saying it's legitimate to question the sanity / mental health of somebody who acts that way. It's not like a war general committing genocide in an attempt to free his people, or whatever, because there is a a reason behind the madness. Look at a sociopath like the Virginia Tech shooter who was clearly mentally fucked. No matter which way you slice it, sociopaths are not mentally stable. If you want to call that legally insane or not, I really don't care. It is a mental problem, bottom line.

barcs, please stop pretending that you know anything about jovan's mental health of lack thereof and the legal definition of sanity he's just another dirtbag murderer/domestic abuser/loser. insanity has a precise legal definition which you are clearly not aware of. More importantly, this is very sad for Kasandra's family which includes Jamal Charles' wife.

completely irrelevant. someone choosing to commit a heinous act does not reflect a mental illness that prevents them from controlling their behavior. otherwise all violent criminal acts would simply be the result of insanity. our medical and legal system does not see it that way.

insanity is a specific diagnosis based on specific criteria. your continual insistence on mis-using the word is your issue, and doesn't contradict the facts of the definition and diagnosis at all.

Originally I was onboard with the psychological issues but the more and more that comes out I think this is a case of a guy who obviously had some anger issues and took the cowards way out after committing a terrible crime.

His reasoning apparently is that his girlfriend was at some party and slept with Trey Songz who is an R&B singer. Whether or not that is true we will never know but that doesn't give the guy justification to shoot her 9 times with the girls mother and the 3 month old baby in the house.

If it turns out he doesn't or didn't have mental health issues he is a scumbag and a coward. Not that having them gave him an excuse either but they could have contributed. Essentially this guy is Rae Carruth but unlike Carruth this bastard just killed himself to avoid prison.
