Between sanchez and tebow. How much is that on our cap next year? Does anybody know? and how are we gonna have mcelroy start and 2 high paid QBs on the team also?
Sanchez salary next year is 8.25 million. His dead money if cut is 17.15 million. He's not getting cut next year. If he's traded he's got a 8.9 million hit coming against the cap immediately in the form of prorated and other bonuses that must be paid. The salary would be paid by the acquiring team if they were willing to do that. It's kind of ugly no matter how you look at it. Sanchez would have been replaced weeks ago if the cap ramifications were not so bad heading into a year where the cap is bad for the Jets anyway.
Between the two of them they cost 15.44 million against next year's cap. Cutting Tebow gets it down to a bit under 14 million. Cutting Sanchez takes it up to 19.7 million.
I think this thread solidifies how I felt before starting it: do whatever we can to make Sanchez look better for an offseason trade, even if we eat some of his contract, its better than all of it and being stuck with him for another year.
It's very hard to see a scenario where trading Sanchez does not give us maybe a 12 million hit on the cap. That would be in the good situation where some team was willing to pay say 5 million of his salary and we were only responsible for the 8.9 million in dead money and 3.25 million in salary. It really is a nasty situation. We're kind of stuck unless we find a team looking to help us out. Sanchez has become a toxic QB choice that drives a substantial part of the fanbase nuts. On the other hand we can't really ditch him due to cap concerns. Can't play him and can't get rid of him. Ick.
Agree totally. It'd be rough sledding to find a way to get rid of Sanchez. The whole thing sucks and Tanny should be held accountable for it.
Maybe renegotiate Sanchez' contract so that he gets guaranteed money over the next 3 years instead of 1/2, then eat part of that cap figure and trade him to another team. Could that work?
Suckchez is a sunk cost for next yr. keep him as the back-up and use a mid-round pick on another qb to develop.
Everyone (including Tanny) knew it was a bad move at the time he was only restructured because Tanny has a fetish for deferring money, making it guaranteed, and screwing over the Jets' future salary cap situation at all costs.
nobody would pick up Sanchez contract. it's a shame, I would have traded Sanchez/Holmes and a 3rd rd pick to Zona for Fitzgerald.
You could probably trade him for a bag of footballs, but those balls would be banged up with their best days gone.
Cut Sanchez and eat the cap hit. Go with McElroy for this season and in 2013. But only if Sanchez shits the bed in the first half of the Jags game.
People - let's not get ahead of our selves here. It would be great if one of the three QB's could develop into a franchise QB. For those that think McElroy will be a franchise QB, put the pipe down. He may, however unlikely that is, but banking on it is ludicrous. It is more likely for him to fall flat on his face next week should he start. This is typically how it happens: 1) 1st string QB who is having a NIGHTMARE performance. These performances by the 1st string QB are generally the type that lead people to wonder how this QB is getting paid by the franchise. 2) Replacement QB enters the game. Because of a surge of emotion from both the fan base and team, team picks up their play. 3) Replacement QB does just enough that by contrast to the 1st string QB seems impressive to the fans. Coaches are in a tight spot. Choose the hot hand? 4) Replacement QB starts the next game. 5) Energy, excitement, and team-wide motivation that helped replacement QB succeed in previous game no longer there. 6) Replacement QB is exposed and fails. 7) It can be seen why the replacement QB was a replacement QB in the first place. 8) Fans now hate replacement QB. I'm not writing McElroy or any QB on this roster off. People clamoring for McElory are just a out of it as are their Sanchez counterparts.
only way to offload Sanchez is like the Rams offloaded Smith to us. You agree to eat/share a good portion of the cap hit, and don't ask for much in return. Or you keep Sanchez on the pine as the most expensive backup in the league, but at least some insurance for injury.
Just had another thought: could we potentially hold the threat of cutting Sanchez and eating the cap hit over his head as fuel to make him completely re-do his contract with us or be cut and maybe not play at all next year?
Sanchez will be here next year holding the clipboard for someone. 2014, they will cut their loses. I can see him being a career NFL backup (ala Carr), he looked really comfortable on the sideline.
