He thought so highly of Tebow that he traded him for a cold beer and a handful of Cheezits before training camp. Remind me how many downfield throws Tebow had in his finest bed shitting when he went 6/22 and a pick against the Chiefs, in the last game of the season, with the playoffs on the line?
Which is probably precisely what a lot of people thought about Steve Young for a lot of years. And yep, a lot of those guys turn out exactly to be scrubs in the NFL. I'd bet there aren't a lot who went 9-7 in their first full seasons worth of games, though. 4 of his first 6 years playing professional football were in the USFL and with Tampa Bay, not behind Montana with the niners.
 Holy shit. Once again, you have no clue what you are talking about. Steve Young signed the largest sports contract in history, when he signed with the USFL's L.A. Express, straight out of college. His contract was bigger than any player in the NFL, in the MLB, in any sport. The USFL was attempting to go to war with the NFL. It was sick of being seen as a minor league football league. They started going after the top collegiate talent; Hershel Walker, Reggie White, Jim Kelly - all ex-USFL superstars. Nobody thought Steve Young was going to be a scrub coming out of college.
Neat. Let's just assume that he didn't complete any of them. That leaves him going 6/15 on short yardage throws. Wow.
Congratulations, you have once again completely misattributed words or context to someone. The quote I was responding to was: The common understanding of this sentence would be that someone came in with a lot of hype, didn't pan out, and is now considered a scrub. The common understanding of this sentence would not be that someone came in already being considered a scrub, with a lot of hype, and didn't pan out. Cool, especially since that isn't what I said or implied. I said: The pretty clear implication of what I said is that a lot of people probably thought Steve Young was a scrub for a lot of years at the beginning of his professional football career - when he was awful.
Why the hell are we comparing Young and Tebow? Especially in a thread about throwing motion, since the only similarities is they both throw lefty.
Young was brought up because he commented publicly on Tebow's "throwing motion" this year and said it was "natural." He said it was his lower body that needs more improvement. Then someone pointed out that Steve Young himself continued to improve for at least 6 years, so that point was relevant to rebut those people that think Tebow's work on his mechanics won't improve any beyond this point. Young threw for a low percentage early in his career, so that was another reason it was relevant. It hasn't been pointed out, but Young used to loop it low in college and as an early pro, so there's another reason it's relevant. Young used to take off and run if it wasn't there, and that tendency tends to correlate with bad mechanics. Young worked on his tirelessly.
None of those pictures show a particularly similar motion other than that they both throw overhand. You suck at judging angles and depth. Watch video of them throwing, they are wildly different. Young has a quick smooth tight delivery with great footwork, balance and body positioning. The ball almost never goes behind his helmet, and he never gets his chest in the way or his front shoulder too low. He also very rarely goes 3/4 like Tebow does. He comes clean over the top, not losing cotrol in the elbow and wrist. They could be good comparisons in the way that Young is the rare guy who dramatically improved their completion percentage, but Young always had great form.
Two things... one grabbing random screenshots you can make any two throwers look similar since there are certain positions that every QB from pop warner up hits during a throw. Second their body positioning even in your screenshots are rather disparate. If I really must break them down Young's right shoulder is more closed, the twisting at the ab area and the fact he is looking hard right suggest his lower body is angled to his right and he is throwing in that direction. Tebow is throwing dead forward, right shoulder has flown wide open, legs are facing slightly to his left. Probably the closest of the bunch, can't compare lower bodies, but look at the shoulder line, Young's front shoulder is above his back, Tebow's is the opposite. Tebow also has the ball closer to his body and where Young has his hand and the ball nearly parallel to the ground Tebow Holds both at about a 45 degree angle maybe a bit more. Tebow here is extremely back foot overbalanced (though benefit of the doubt he could be loading up for a bomb) But look at his right thighpad, he hasn't opened up like Young does. His arm is also extended much further back and away from his body (see how you can see his entire bicep? but none of Young's) Look at the front arm which he is carrying very high where Young drops his below the numbers. Again high front hand, twisted torso, over extended hand hard to tell but looks like his front leg is closed as well. Certainly hip pads make them look more closed than Young. This one they are throwing to totally different places, but: high front arm again for Tebow (also wildly inconsistent with his normal motion, fully extended) Curling the ball back to his helmet and rotating the wrist (look at Young, arm nearly vertical, ball held with point perpendicular to forearm, Tebow is almost 90 degrees from that. Tebow is very closed as he looks to be throwing downfield straight or slightly to his right. Young is open and by head position looks to be throwing to his left. That's an awful lot of difference I spotted just in a few still shots, not even broken down from the same throw, and done in less than 5 minutes. So yes they have very different mechanics.
Dude, no one ever said that the motions were exact carbon copies. Do you know what the word S I M I L A R means ? Or do you need it explained to you? And no, that you found a few differences given all the possible variables for mechanics DOESN'T mean that they aren't similar.
What is similar about it if almost all of the variables in the mechanics are different. if the foot position, leg placement, hip position, arm extension, front arm placement, shoulder plane, wrist angle, stride and release point are all different. Yes they are similar I guess in that they are mostly over the top throwers, but so are 99% of QBs. There is no reason to consider Tebow and Young more similar than basically any 2 QBs in the league right now picked at random (excepting Rivers). The similarities are in the most basic elements where most throwers are the same, but all the things that vary more QB to QB they are very different. It is even more apparent watching them on video since the pace, smoothness and length of their delivery is very different.
