By working in the front office under a GM - not working across from him as an HC or other position.

While there is exposure between the jobs, no one in thier right mind would think Tanny could take a coaching position, even something as simple as assistant DL coach

I like the idea of Billick acquiring talent on the defensive side of the football and in the running game, Which is what a REX RYAN team should be built for.

This is an article from February regarding the possibility of Billick's return to coaching:
    http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/41659/billick-doesnt-expect-to-coach-again

I'm not sure if that article is more damning than it is supportive of him, but I thought it was interesting to hear his thoughts on GMs' and HCs' roles in organizations.

This isn't about rebuilding. Maybe you should follow your own advice and chill out.

As I mentioned before, GMs make mistakes; it's unrealistic if you expect otherwise. I'm okay with mistakes, but when there's a pattern of mistakes over a lengthy period of time, then maybe it warrants questioning the GM and considering a replacement.

Tannenbaum has repeatedly traded up for players despite the fact that depth issues and the need to play JAG's at key positions has killed the Jets in the past.

He has repeatedly allowed LG to be manned by people better suited to be backups or out of the NFL.

He has repeatedly allowed players to be drafted based on their combine performances as opposed to a balanced reading of their entire resume.

He drafted Vladimir Ducasse in the 2nd round out of UMass!? That school never produces great football players and is rarely drafted from but the Jets took the plunge because Ducasse looked good at the combine.

Absolutely. And tanny - a UMass grad--drafts Ducasse but somehow has no idea about Victor Cruz's potential?

    Cruz went to Umass FYI.

The first one was true, several years ago, but instead of stating what moves you so highly disagree with your talking in general. Try being more direct if you can. He traded up for Revis, Harris, Greene, and Sanchez. In the past three drafts he ha mostly stayed put. After taking over the 2005 team the was a mess talent wise he infused the team with the core that would go to back to back AFC championship games through many of these moves.

Alan Faneca was little more than a back-up talent while here? Why than was our run game near the top of the league and our line considered a strength during that time? Faneca was never a great pass blocker but a monster in the run game. He was exactly that while here.

The third one is pure fantasy on your part. Again start laying out some examples here, which you can't because your purely talking out your ass.

Rex has stated several times he likes dominant small school guys because he thinks they can get better with coaching. I guess teams should bpnever draft small school guys huh? Just ask Jerry Rice what a waste of time those picks are. Also ignore all the signs that Ducasse is coming into the role at LG, because that does not support your weak stance.

    2008 - Gholston, Keller
    2009 - Greene
    2010 - Wilson, Ducasse, McKnight
    2011 - Ellis
    2012 - Hill

All drafted at least in part because they had freak days at the combine. Several traded up for because the big day at the combine made them must-have players in the eyes of the Jets FO.

This FO is no better at finding talent than the Bradway FO that preceded it. That's why the Jets are getting low on gas again with glaring holes emerging.

  15. First of all...aside from Gholston, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong w/ any of the players you made mention of. In fact everyone of them have shown glimpses of being major contributors for this franchise. Is consistency up for debate? Of course. But that's true across the board for young players.Writing off Hill,Ellis,Wilson,Ducasse & Mcknight is deplorable. There is a such thing as player development from training, classroom & on field experience. You take the good w/ the bad early. Not everyone is Bart Starr right out of the gate.

Secondly, It's quite fashionable to downplay the significance of the combine & refer to disappointing draft picks as workout warriors. But every team sends their entire personnel departments to Indy every single year w/ their yard sticks, stop watches & cones. That costs time, money & resources. If it's such a waste of time & not a clear indicator of ability, why do teams take it so seriously? It's a part of the process. It's a way to put some metrics behind players attributes. In fact, there are plenty of players who were great on their college film, who did not work out well at the combine who proved to be overmatched at the NFL level? Derrick Strait ring a bell? He was an all american at Oklahoma. Couldn't turn & run at the senior bowl or the combine. Jets took a shot on his tape..& he lacked the foot speed/bend to get on the field consistently.

Jets front office isn't perfect. Have they made mistakes? of course they have. But they are nowhere near as incompetent & shallow as you portray them. And to write off young players who have showed signs of playmaking ability just b/c they aren't finished products..doesn't instantly qualify them for the negative category of Tannenbaum's permanent record.

  16. Really? It was Ducasse's combine?

Tell me then...which metric was it that cried out to the Jets that Ducasse was a player they had to have based on his workout?

40 Yard Dash: 5.21 seconds (Average 40 time)
20 Yard Dash: 2.86 seconds (Decent 20 yarder)
    10 Yard Dash: 1.76 seconds
Bench Press: 29 reps (225 lb) (Above average but not elite)

    http://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?f=Vladimir&l=Ducasse&i=8480

Ducasse was considered a late 1st early 2nd as early as senior bowl practices. And boy did he have some moments of dominance that week. His combine was slightly above average at best. But man what a work out warrior!

This list is such shit its funny. It would figure a guy that does not follow the draft or talk in the draft forum would throw these players out here.

Lets start with Hill. After several people called you on this in the Hill thread, you ran away never to post again. Mainly because yoyur not posting factual info and are basicly lying to try and back up a weak position. Hill was widely seen as a second or first wounder entering the draft, and was seen as a second rounder pre combine. he was drafted in the second round.

Ellis was drafted because of his size and play. His he did not blow up the combine, but he actually fell due to the legal situation he was in. Another flat out lie.

Wislon was the a sure fire first rounder entering the draft. It was a silght shock draft day shock that McCourty went before him as some had compared him to Haden. Ducasse was always seen as a guy with immens power at the point of attack who needed coaching. He was a LT in school and widely seen as a 3rd round pick in the pre draft ranking. We took him a few spots before the third round. McKnight was drafted becasue of his speed and was seen as a poor man's bush, but his combine did nothing to help his stock and he went in the 5th round. He was always seen as a great athlete whos production did not match the hype of "the next Reggie bush" entering USC.

The Jets had Greene as the top back on thier board that year, rightly so or not. He was always seen as a mid round pick and we chose him at the top of the third. He was very good his senior year at Iowa running with power and showing speed to break long runs 9oh where has that gone).

Keller was seen as a matchup nightmare coming our of Prudue. He was often split wide and used as a hybird TE/ Receiver. Again not anther workout warrior who moved up only due to a good combine.

The Ghost was the only player on that list most would agree with. Yay you hit one. Congrats.

Now stop lying, acting like you follow the draft, and basicly trolling your fellow Jet fans to support a very bad argument. To think they drafted all those players mostly on combine results is either extremely ignorant or completely dishonest.

From what I've been able figure out, Mangini did have a lot of input into the 2009 draft.

There's something else here. It's certainly possible that Mangini and Tannenbaum function better as a team than as individuals when it comes to evaluating talent. I'd say their record together is pretty solid, but apart (Mangini in Cleveland, Tanny in NY) is pretty weak.

I have not been happy with Tanny letting go of key players (Braylon, Washington, Cotchery, Faneca, etc.) and some of the bad deals he has made (Holmes, Pace, Scott), but these past drafts are starting to look much better. We have a good corps of young talent if you think about it, mostly through the draft under Rex.

Rd. 1- Sanchez (undecided), Wilson (got better every season), Wilkerson (home-run), Coples (freakish talent, we'll see how he pans out)

Rd. 2- Ducasse (gradually taking over the starting role @ LG), Stephen Hill (same boat as Coples)

Rd. 3- Greene (solid back, better compliment), Ellis (same boat as Coples & Hill, ridiculous upside), Davis (assuming starting role sooner rather than later)

Rd. 4- McKnight (great ST and change of pace), Powell (emerging as 3rd down back)

Rd. 5- Connor (ehh, idk), Kerley (Do I even have to say anything?)

I'll only list 6 & 7 rounders still with team.

Rd. 6- Slauson (has started the past three seasons, he'll probably lose his job though), Bush (is seeing playing time, I believe will eventually be a starter in later years)

Rd. 7- McElroy (solid backup QB, not enough arm strength to be a starter), Allen (in the same boat as Bush)

Now, in terms of talent and potential, I think we have drafted pretty well. The one thing you can say about Tanny's drafts is that he trades away way too many late round pick. The team does not have nearly enough depth as it should have. Kudos to the younger guys for stepping up. They may be making Tanny look better than he actually is. Kudos to anyone who reads this too.
