Out of entire symphony of bad calls that onside kick isn't one of them. That call was easily the best call of the night for one reason, it actually almost worked. Our defense was absolutely gassed for an almost 8 minute drive by Houston before McKnight ran the kickoff back. Now at that point you have two options. You can kick the ball deep and hope your defense who are sucking down oxygen on your bench and hadn't really contained Houston all night long will finally make a stop. Or you can try to get the ball back on the onsides kick. It's a no brainer and again, if Schillens makes that catch, we're probably celebrating a win right now.
What I don't get was the flag, it seems like if the Jets recovered the ball, the flag would have stood. If you throw a flag bcuz the ball did not travel 10 yards, how can you change your opinion without looking at the play again? Anyhow the onside kick it was a great call, def worth the risk due to the defense being winded. So the risk reward was worth it but unfortunately Schilens could not hold on to the ball.
Could not disagree more. This was an amazing, gutsy call by Rex. They caught the Texans off guard, and if Shillens doesn't have butterfingers the Jets have the ball.
This thread is a very good example of people complaining what ever happens. Nobody is ever completely happy or satisfied with anything and always find something negative out of everything. The onside kick was probably the best call Rex and the CS made the whole game. Folk nailed it perfectly, and if Schilens would've hung on to the ball we would've had all the momentum and would've been in position to win the fucking game. Especially because the D had been on the field the whole quarter and let Houston drive almost the whole field for 6 pts, on their previous possession. They came up tough though in the end and managed to only give up a FG. That doesn't take away that they were tired as shit, especially after having no time to rest, because McKnight took it to the house on the ensuing KO.
Exactly and I agree completely. Even if the Jets did not score on that drive, if they get possession, this thread is not started.
Yeah, the people calling it a poor, momentum-killing call are not using their noggins. The defense had JUST come off the field after a 14 play 8 minute 70 yard drive. Neither the offense nor defense had any momentum. Returning a kick for a touchdown doesn't magically make your execution better. Winning an onside kick and basically getting a turnover and unexpected possession CAN spark an offense, though. What point are you trying to make here? 80000 people in that stadium probably felt that team couldn't win without gimmicks. We were 2-2 coming off a terrible loss, minus our biggest difference maker on each side of the ball, plus our 2 next best receiving options. Turnovers swing momentum, winning the field position battle swings momentum. A kick return for a touchdown puts 7 points on the board and puts an exhausted defense right back on the field.
It was a great call. Rex won't apologize for it, nor should he. If the Jets would have recovered, that would have been another huge boost to the momentum that the Jets had going. Players would play above their normal talent. I'm not saying if the Jets recovered they would have won, but it would have greatly increased their chances just from the team's attitude changing for the better.
great and gutsy call which i support 100% - if it had worked, all the fans would be calling rex a genius so get over it...support your freaking team!
It was a good call. I love it when coaches display killer instinct like that; it shows that they want to win the game however they can.
I had no problem with the 4th and 1s, the on side kick, even Hill failing to catch the bomb from Tebow. That will happen. The play(s) that to me are inexcusable are the 1st and goal from the 3 after the 20 yard Tebow run. Yes, Sanchez 'owned' the red zone last year but that was with his starting receivers including Keller and Plexico. He had neither Monday night. Failing to put Tebow under center in that situation is the biggest reason we lost the game. We all talked about how Tebow is unstoppable from the 3 yrd line, and that we may even run 2 pt conversions this year with Tebow. Rex can't control JJ Watt making an great tip pass, or Hill (a player we grabbed off the street) dropping a 50 yrd bomb. But Rex CAN and SHOULD control who's in charge of scoring 7 pts from the 3 yard line.
Step back and think about this scenario: 1 - you know if you onside kick that there won't be a defender near the ball. 2 - one of your players will actually be there long enough to prepare for the ball 3 - that player is one of your WR which means he actually knows how to catch (supposedly). 4 - defense is looking shot 5 - offense hasn't shown the ability to drive down the length of the field & score It was an excellent call & Chaz was put into an ideal position to make the play & help his team. When the moment came for him to shine, he blew it.
Speaking of flags, one of the things that pisses me off more than anything, is having flags being thrown, and then picked up afterwards. Rediculous. I'f you throw the flag, it must be because you saw something, otherwise why throw it in the first place? Then you decide you didn't really see it?????
I thought it was a great call when he kicked it. I thought it was a great call when Chaz dropped it. I thought it was a great call when we gave up a FG. I still think it was a great call. Rex knew the D was gassed from that long drive and took a gamble. I applaud him for playing to win.
The onside kick and the 2 fake punts reeked of desperation but that is what you have to do against better teams sometimes. They were all pretty good calls and against the best team in the AFC idk how you can be mad at it
Momentum killer after McKnight big play, but I won't knock Rex for it because Schilens should of had the ball!
Even with the call, the Jets had every chance to win. Down 6, with the ball. The Texans are good enough to where the Jets needed to sort of sneak up on them to win this game. I think they could have scored as much as needed -- they stuck to their run game and protected a lead. I think it all worked out fine. Just needed a scoring drive at the end. Tough play on the tip drill.
