Wait, isn't Ryan a "defensive genius"? Isn't he, in his own words, "the best defensive mind in the league"? So he couldn't come up with a scheme to handle the Texans? And when they ran misdirection, he couldn't come up with an adjustment? You want to blame the failures on lack of talent, fine, that's legitimate. But a Houston team that runs a pretty straight up offense comes out running reverses and other mis-direction nonsense, and you are not prepared for it and don't adjust to it, that is being OUTCOACHED. Remember the Super Bowl a few years ago? The Patriot offensive juggernaut comes in, and Tom Coughlin and company had a scheme that stymied Brady and company, and won a championship. That's the difference coaching makes.
We lost for a variety of reasons, but the biggest one was something called "JJ Watt"... I mean that is one hell of a player that I wish the Jets had right now. Hopefully every one of our LB's learned something from watching him, because he really laid down a lesson on successful linebacking last night. Him, plus the near Pick-6 in the redzone, plus the absolutely mystifying onsides kick thing they did right after the McKnight KOTD return. The Jets could have won this game, which is something nobody thought when the game started. Houston may be the best team in football right now but the Jets proved that if they had all their players on the field the score would have been different. I feel bad right now, but not terrible about the team in general.
I thought the onsides kick call was great because the special teams were playing very well and they had no idea it was coming. It would have worked if Schillens didn't drop the ball that hit him right in the chest. The Saints pulled it off in the superbowl a few years back, and I don't recall them being heavily criticized for that. Sparano seems much less conservative than Schotty. He seems more willing to take that down field shot to put the game away. We had a few real close ones like that. I don't blame coaching at all. I blame 3 factors. Receiver drops, offensive line run blocking and the Texans playing very good defense. Even with our run defense struggling, we still could have put it away.
I loved the onside. We had momentum on ST the defense just got ran over for 6+ minutes. Offense was hype why not get them the ball
It was a ridiculous call because there was still a lot of time left in the game, there was no reason to resort to something desperate like that at the time. Simply ridiculously unnecessary and seriously not worth the risk. The Jets should have kicked off normally and made them work for their yards and then try to stop them on 3rd down and get the ball back. Very VERY bad strategy on that play.
are you sure on the "they succeed more often than they fail" part? they had the play perfectly played but they couldn't hold on to the ball, giving the texans great pield position, which luckily only led to a field goal. I'm not gonna spout out they shouldn't have done it, they had the surprise part of it down, but hold on to the ball damnit!! tough play there, but to do it more often is suicide, if you don't get the ball, the other team is in the drivers seat, especially an offensive juggernaut like the Texans. through all the shortcomings, injuries, and lack of execution and tackling this year, the upcoming games outside of the patriots are lighter and a chance to make a turnaround. it will take some divine intervention, but it has happened before. this season is already the biggest roller coaster of media gloom and headaches i've ever experienced, and it would be funny as all hell if the jets pulled out of this and get themselves into a possible wild card opportunity in the end. again, it will take some divine intervention, which has already happened, in the miami game with the 2 missed field goals, can't rely on divine intervention, and they certainly can't rely on surprise onside kicks, it was oddly soothing to watch them not get completely blown out last night, weird as that may sound
One of the "variety of reasons" we lost is our pass defense broke down and allowed their TE to run uncovered into the endzone. Mental errors in coverage are happening way too much.
Onside kick aside. They should really have run Tebow three times straight ahead when they were down at the 2. Isn't that his roll? Maybe if Rex got involved in the whole game he could have made it happen.
because the Giants had scrub players and won because of scheme, not because they had great players on the D Line and were able to force Brady to get rid of the ball quicker than he preferred to. unfortunately, your analysis of the Super Bowl is not reality. the reality is far more complex than your simplification. great coaching still needs at least good players to execute. even John Wooden has stated that talent wins. I am going to side with John Wooden over your position that great strategy can compensate for a lack of talent. bad coaching can certainly hinder talent. and great coaching can certainly compensate to some extent for a lack of talent. but over the course of a game good coaching and talent are going to trump good coaching and no talent. and just to continue to punch holes in your ridiculous logic, Rex can be a great defensive mind, but if he is going against a capable offensive mind with better talent than he has on defense, the opposing coaches success in no way equates to an inability of Rex's coach. the dynamics that lead to success are far more complicated than if he is great he will always have success.
You really just need to stop typing. I don't understand how you can say holding the Texans to only 16 points after the first drive was a poor adjustment. It's an ignorant statement to make. There are plenty of things to nitpick here, but you make it sound like we were out of the game after the first drive and that we never recovered from the first drive. You clearly have no grasp on the flow of yesterday's game. The Jets D played well (at times) and got plenty of 3 and outs when they needed to. They couldn't stop the run at times, but they also stopped it in key situations yesterday. They made some big plays when it counted. They obviously adjusted if they only lost by 6 with a chance to win the game at the end, and while they didn't win, having nothing positive to say about the game is just dumb. The Jets could have executed better, but we had plenty of scrubs in there (not to mention the number of starters on this team that are already scrubs) and they played pretty damn well. This was our most impressive receiving corps since Week 1. Our best running game since then too (it was still awful). And I'd say a decent defensive performance through the air. The inability to stop Foster was expected, but it also didn't really decide the game. They didn't drain the clock out at the end. The Jets stopped the run when they needed to. Plenty of improvements need to be made, and while I question the upside of the Jets' talent pool, I think that at least played with some heart yesterday and it was one of the most interesting Jets games I've watched in a long time.
Last time I looked it depends on how you define "surprise" but it generally agreed to range from 60-70%. Sporano is bad for this team. He is way to conservative. When Rex said that the call was all his, does anyone doubt that? It was a great call that just didn't work out. Hopefully he will try it again.
I dont think there is anything conservative about what we saw yesterday. We threw down field a lot. Onsides kick. Going for it on 4th down multiple times. He called to bring in our corner to play WR and bombed it to him. Thats conservative to you?
You're down by 6 points with a whole lot of time left plus the team is all pumped up after the McKnight return TD, what the hell are you trying a desperation onsides kick in that situation for? WHY? It was totally deflating. All the positive pump from the McKnight TD was wiped right off the table with that stupid idiotic move.
I agree but it would have been epic if he got it... Really the biggest play was Sanchez's pick on the 4 and giving up a huge return, that was a 10 point swing right before the half. That was a hugely deflating play.
Do not agree with the OP. Other than a few substitution problems, Jets coaching staff did well. Texans are a far better team.
Were we watching the same game? I agree the first drive was terrible, the D fell hard for the play action and payed for it. But other than that and Foster's 50ish yard run in the first half I think our D played great. Cro and Wilson stepped up big time, and we had a halfway decent pass rush. Didn't our D hold the Texans to three 3 and outs? One of the best offenses in the NFL? The fact that Foster would have a decent run every now and then I don't really look down on the D for...he's ARIAN FOSTER. Now for the offense. Again, for one of the best defenses in the nfl and jj watt, vs a second/third string offense, our o played great. Was it perfect? Obviously not, but Sanchez's stats were very close to Shaub's post game, and compare what the two have to work with. I am proud of the Jets even though they lost. If they play that way the rest of the season and get Keller back they could have a shot at the playoffs.
Arian Foster Andre Johnson Owen Daniels JJ Watt Brooks Reed Brian Cushing Tell me what players that started for the Jets last night, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, are impact players like those guys. The Jets went into a gun fight with a knife last night and nearly came out victorious. Clearly you have to be very aggressive when you're out manned like that.
Someone said in the game thread before it happended that an onside kick play should be called (right after the 100 yd return by McKnight) becuase the defense would be gassed and tired from the previous texans drive and now they would have to take the texans offense on again. What if the Texans led our defense 80 yds down the field? Do you realize how tired and gassed the defense would be? 2 straight texans drives. Even if we lost the onside kick our D still only had half a field to play defense. Rex knows what he was doing.
Joseph is a great corner too. Obviously him and Cromartie are interchangeable but he's a big part of that Texans D. They used to have a terrible secondary until he was brought in.
