Totally agree that the best teams plug and play. Even the Pats were able to put in Matt Cassel who didn't start since freaking high school and have a 11-5season. Something that irks me about Tanny is that we've been playing in this "Win now" strategy for the past couple years. Tanny has shown this by his trading up for picks and acquiring risky "problem" players hoping that the team wins and avoids injury to make all his risky moves "work" at the end of the year. Problem is that many times issues arise during the season where adjustments in personnel have to be made. The Jets never have that plan B ready and a good example of how little they care, is that half our draft class was cut before the start of the season. As if our team of 53 is so good right now that we couldn't even give them a shot...
A big part of the lack of discipline though, is the fact we have no good players who are leaders. Seriously, who is the leader for the team? We have no offensive leader, and no defensive leader. The worst part is, I don't see anybody on this team capable of stepping up and fulfilling that role. The only player we had that could possible take that role was Revis, even then we would have still needed someone to take control of the offense. Seriously who would be a quality "leadership" type player for the offense? Holmes? Not really, the guy has a pretty poor personality. Sanchez? Just because you're the QB doesn't mean you can be a leader, nobody is gonna listen to a guy who plays as poorly as Sanchez. Mangold could possibly be a leader, other than Mangold there is no one good enough to take charge. There is only so much a coach can do when it comes to discipline, we need a player leader, one that can connect with the other players.
You just hit the nail on the head. Where are our leaders?? I suppose Revis was one. Possibly Bart Scott? Somebody needs to take charge of the locker room and get other guys to get their heads out of their asses. The sad part is, on almost every successful team the QB is the leader. Sanchez displays no leadership skills. He projects himself like a pussy. That's a problem. Too bad we can't implant Tebow's personality into Sanchez's body.
The coach creates the leaders. He identifies guys with leadership and cultivates relationships them and forms and inner circle. He meets with the inner circle to discuss his objectives and then he uses the inner circle to help him reach those objectives.
There was a lot of effort on defense. There just wasn't very good execution to go alongside it. Here are some of my takeaways from what I saw on that side of the ball yesterday: Kyle Wilson needs to move to safety. He gave great effort supporting the run and early on when the Jets made a tackle on the edge for short gain he was in on those tackles. He gave great effort in the passing defense but he just cannot play with his back to the ball. He has no instincts for that. He's not a cornerback, he's a safety. He's actually better covering the slot than on the outside because more of the play is in front of him. He's not really good at either job though as a pass defender. The Jets need to move him to safety next year and put the play in front of him. Sione Pouha is old and creaky. Yeah he's still strong but he was getting moved right where the defense wanted him on most plays. There was one play where he got pushed from nose tackle all the way to outside the RE's slot and he just could not avoid being completely out of the play from there. He has no recovery speed at this point. He's slow and lumbering. problem one with the Jets defense is right in the middle when Pouha is in and he can't rush the passer for his life. No pressure at all. The Jets have nobody to set the edge on the weak side. Yeah Thmas made a play or two early on but he gets taken out most of the time instead of forcing the runner back in. When Pace was put over there he was lost in spaaaace. McIntyre made a few plays from the strongside but he was invisible on the right side of the defense. Neither Harris not Scott can shut down the second level once runners get through the line in the middle. If a RB gets by the line he's going for 6+. The Jets run defense has real holes in it at this point. That makes everything else on defense elemental. Because teams aren't going to try to exploit the Jets secondary and linebackers in pass coverage when they can just run the ball and get the job done predictably. None of this is about effort. It's about talent and tools and the Jets are short in both aspects of the game at this point on their stronger side of the ball.
Yeah it was Henning and Daboll. Henning was terrible. Daboll was ok. I blame Sparano for letting the right side of the o-line deteriorate in Miami but Phins fans wanting to blame him for the offense when he wasn't the guy drafting or running the offense is revisionist history.
The game plan for the Bills game was excellent. The Bills expected the Jets to pound it down their throat but Sparano had them come out and move the ball through the air. The other three games, not so much. Tony really is not overly creative.
It's not just discipline. It's also talent. Tannenbaum has control at the top. The drafting has been horrible. We don’t have a good starting QB or back ups. Our RBs could not start on any of the other NFL teams. The OL is average at best with no credible back ups. We are told that our TE is a potential pro bowler, but that has not happened over his tenure and the backups are below average. Which of our WRs could be a starter on any other NFL team? I agree that we lack discipline but we also don’t have the talent to compete at a championship level. The defense is another case of lack of talent but not nearly as bad as the offense. At least we have some good young talent. We still lack some key components to make it an excellent defense. The offense has too many 3s and out. The defense is on the field too much. They can’t get off the field giving up too many 3rd and longs. The win now mentality has been a failure. Over the past 4 years, we have moved up in the draft to get people, but give away too many draft picks. We should take a lesson from the Pats. They have had over 20 more draft picks during the Tannenbaum/Ryan era. I guess what I’m saying is that the Jets lack both DISCIPLINE and TALENT. It’s time to say “Good Bye” to both Tannenbaum and Ryan.
I agree 100% except I think Rex should be given another year with a QB of his choosing. Sanchez was a Woody Johnson pick. Tanny has to go period!
Lack of fundamentals, holding on to a pass, leading a receiver, when to call timeouts, how to block in punt protection, how to tackle....
So when the offense performs it was good game planning and play selection, and vice versa? There are no other factors at play here? Like blocking and catching? It's way too easy to blame the OC, way too easy. Nobody liked Hackett, nobody liked Schottenheimer, nobody will like Sparano. But its a fucking talent problem.
He had discipline, but nobody liked him. There is a balance. If you could create a RexGina it could be unstoppable
I don't see a problem with discipline on the offensive side of the ball just a lack of talent. I will credit Sparano at being a very good disciplinarian. Miami was always near the top of least amount of penalties assessed. Defensive side I see it.
If Rex were to get dumped is there anyone of our assistant coaches or coordinators that has the potential to be a good to very good head coach if given the opportunity?
Don't get me wrong the execution of the plan was flawless and that masked the deficiencies. But Tony has not come up with anything close in the last three games to equal that and I doubt he will. He is very old fashioned smash mouth football. He still hasn't even figured a way to get Tebow involved which he needs to do quickly.
Nonsense, you don't know what kind of talent you have until you have disciplined play. Like I said in the OP, lack of discipline makes the GM look bad. Show us disciplined play and then lets talk about talent. Sanchez looks like crap. Fix his foot work, insist that he throws it away under the right circumstances. Force him to tuck it away. Make his life miserable until he does this things. I guarantee if he went up to NE they could easily win 11+ games with him. Sanchez has plenty of talent. He turns in undisciplined performance after performance because he is not held accountable. You can apply this to any player on the field. Lack of talent is the scapegoat excuse. Make the most of what you have first and then talk to me about talent.
