When he was waiting to be drafted, and they were talking about his versatility, they said he was the best Cornerback at USC, the day he got there..
You people crack me up. Rex Ryan, say what you want about his HC abilities, is one of the top couple of defensive minds in the game. Period...factoid...bar none. Now, what in the hell makes you think he would allow this if he didn't think McKnight had some kind of potential/skill to be playing CB in a pinch? If he thought he had no shot he'd go find someone off the practice squad of some other team or the street. End of story! Good god, what makes all of you think you know more than this man? And if you truly do then how come you aren't earning six figures as a DC some where in the NFL? If McKnight can't get it done he goes back to being a every once in a while back while STILL performing his ST duties which will not change. Holy Cow. Let's all jump off the Golden Gate Bridge...the SKY is falling. There are times I feel that I could fit the combined football IQ of some of these people posting into a THIMBLE!
nice move.mcknight is an athlete. he may very well pan out as a dime back. absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. this is a good way of maximizing roster space.
I remember something along these lines as well. I remember Rex last year saying that he thinks McKnight could start CB somewhere one day also. I'm sure if McKnight was not capable of playing some kind of role at CB, Rex wouldn't put him there. Is he going to replace Revis? No, but I'm sure he'll do his job as a 5th stringer.
so, what you're saying is that a draft pick of ours at RB being moved to defense, and picking up a practice squad running back to address RB depth because of a failed RB pick, and the Jets stubbornly sticking by 1 speed no move Shonn Greene, is a good idea? It's laughable because the Jets are even in this situation to begin with. They drafted an RB this year, cut him, then claimed a guy off another PS as a "solution". The other "solution" is moving a player from O to D during the season. The fact that the Jets even need to consider and will make such moves is absolutely 100% ridiculous, I'm sorry. I'm glad McKnight played a FEW snaps last year at CB mostly during the Pats game. That hardly warrants a mid season positional/side of the ball change. These things usually (and by usually i mean always) occur in offseasons over a period of time.
What makes us think that? Because he has no choice..they haven't bought anyone else he can use instead, have they? Not even off somebody's practice squad which is as cheap as you can get. And please don't say that a practice squad CB who has been coached and playing that position since being in the league isn't better than a RB who can't make the grade. Now if you want to make the argument that he has no choice because Revis hasn't been DLed yet that would be valid but to think McKnight is better than somebody who made the league as a CB is preposterous.
It's not like he's going to have to cover #1 or even #2 guys. He'd just need to be a quick guy that can cover in certain situations in the red zone or in the slot. He's fast so he could also play a Cromartie type role. If he's been practicing and looks serviceable why NOT try it out? You act like we're gambling our future away or like he can't go back to running back if we really need him to. It's not like he's even getting snaps at RB so this is a low risk high reward scenario. Funny how people could possibly be angry about this. It if doesn't work, it's not a big deal. He's still good in the return game and chances are it would only be for special situations.
Lets see Trufaunt is a jounery man UFL player that made to the NFL later in life..and Lankster was 7th round pick...Neither has McKnights physical abilities. I can see Mcknght being the nickel back pretty soon.
This is a great litmus test to identify the most reactionary fans. Relax, folks. I'm sure the team is keeping all options on the table. No one's pinning all their hopes on McKnight making a position change to offset the loss of Revis.
Seth Walder @SethWalderNYDN McKnight said he took his assignment to CB as "I wasn't good enough to play running back." #nyj Jane McManus @janesports "Me playing cornerback in high school does not help," McKnight said.
Seth Walder @SethWalderNYDN McKnight caught 3 INTs in practice today, he said. One off each QB. #nyj
People will look for anything to bitch about. LMAO at the one guy who said this will be the final nail in the coffin of Tanny. :rofl2: What's wrong with a little versatility on the team?? He'll be a dime back playing in the middle of the field in long yardage. Rex might get creative with him and blitz him off the edges in those situations. He does have speed and instincts and is not exactly foreign to the position and we can surely use SOMEONE, ANYONE with speed to rush the passer. The guy will be covering 4th and 5th receivers. But yup this will be the final nail in Tanny's coffin. :rofl2::breakdance:
Thats what I don't like about Joe McKnight. He talks like a loser and that shit attitude and work ethic is what translates to the field. Its the same McKnight who came into his first training camp so out of shape he was puking on the sidelines.
I can't believe Rex thinks that a former RB that might have a week or two playing on defense is his first choice to replace Wilson at nickle..sorry, I just can't. We would all think Rex is a better coach than that. He can say whatever he wants, he said Gholsten was improving too, but if he makes McKnight the nickle and he gets burned like I think he will it won't bode well for Rex's future as a head coach or OC. Nobody can convince me that is what he wants.
Rex sees talent in McKnight at a potential DB. Rex needs depth at that position....not so much for this game but for the Pat's game and in case yet another DB goes down. Right now Joe will be #5 on the depth chart. He will see the field 6-8 times against th 49'rs. Plus he will still return punts AND Sparano can still use him 4-6 plays a game taking the hand off from Tebow and running -5 yards. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Basically all this changes is which bench McKnight sits on 80% of the snaps.
Even if this move works and he can play CB, that's not what he was drafted for. I realize this was only a fourth round pick, but that 2010 draft looks more shaky than ever now. And who are the RB's now? Man, a team wiith any depth would have put Greene on the practice squad by now.
