Wilks been awesome. Other than Revis he has been our best Defensive player imo. Pouha hasn't been as good as he was last year I'm wondering if his back problem is lingering.
Quinton Coples is an interior pass rusher, thats where he makes his living. He's the prototypical 3-4 DE for Rex. He's not getting on the field for reasons unknown
Wilkerson was the perfect draft pick at the time of our selection. He's played every game and is very durable. He performs his 3-4 DE responsibilities very well. Nothing sexy, - but a reliable lunch pail guy.
Brooks Reed was who I thought we would pick but with the team letting go of Ellis and being comfortable with BT and CP I guess it made sense
The D line is the LAST thing I'm worried about. Lots of youth, plus Pou'ha, we'll be good for years to come. We just need better linebackers. Stopping the run has been difficult.
I dont know what games yuo guys are watching, but the defensive line has been complete dog shit in the aspect of getting pressure on the quarterback. And theyve done a horrible job stopping the run all year. The inability to get pressure on the quarterback from our front seven is killing us. The d-line straight up sucks, and the linebackers are even worst. We have no pass rush and now, for the first time in the Rex Ryan era we can not stop the run.
Glad to see the majority here actually watch the game, beyond the sacks, TDs, INTs, etc. Wilkerson has been a beast and is doing his *assigned* role to near perfection.
The job of a 3-4 D-Lineman is not rush the passer (that's generally the OLBs job) or even really to make the tackles (MLB/OLBs job). They're mainly supposed to take up blocks and push O-Lineman around, with these other things coming as secondary.
I am glad this thread was made....I think wilkerson has been a huge disappointment since weve drafted him... Team can't stop the run this year and hes supposed to be a big part of it, you draft DE in the first round to be impact players not just good or "solid". The way you guys are describing wilkerson basically sounds like what was said about Bryan Thomas for many years. Im not asking wilkerson to be a 10 sack guy but no sacks and not even any real pressures this year is unacceptable for a FIRST round pick in his 2nd season. Its about time someone called this guy out!
Laundry is by far our best defensive player right now....everyone in the front 7 hasn't gotten the job done yet and if they don't turn it around we have no shot this year. Doesn't help we have two LBs that are so over the hill its not even funny (pace and scott)
And here's my issue with 1st round draft picks on guy's that their sole purpose is to tie up lineman and fill B & C gaps when we do not have the LB'ing group that is fast enough or athletic enough to get to the QB?
As a matter of fact, according to ProFootballFocus, Mo Wilkerson is the highest rated player on the Jets defense through 3 weeks (+11.2 Overall) while LaRon Landry is the lowest rated player through 3 weeks (-6.9 Overall). Landry has undoubtedly made an overall positive impact on this defense, but his individual performance has room for improvement.
Wilkerson has 14 tackles and one stop for loss thus far. It was actually a really nice one as well. No sacks yet, but they will come. Coples Ellis Pou'ha Wilkerson will be a beastly unit once they click. They don't need to be stat whores, they just need to apply enough pressure. Comparatively: Wilkerson - 14 tackles, one SFL Ellis - 4 tackles, 1 forced fumble Devito - 11 tackles Pou'ha - 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 pass defense Pace -15 tackles and 1 SFL Bart Scott - 19 tackles and 2 SFL David Harris - 26 tackles, 1 pass defense Mcintyre - 10 tackles, 1 pass defense, 2 SFL, 2 sacks Revis - 11 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pick, 3 pass defenses Wilson - 9 tackles, 1 pick, 1 pass defense Cromartie - 9 tackles, 1 pick 6, 2 pass defenses Landry - 16 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 pass defense, 1 pick 6. Bell - 21 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pass defense Eric Smith - 1 tackle and 1 pass defense in his one game playing backup. Eh, posted em all for anyone interested. I like the way our secondary looks!
Coples isn't really a 3-4 end. In the 3-4 he's a tweener, too big and ungainly to play LB and not big enough to play DE. He's really a 4-3 tackle and that's where the Jets are going to wind up putting him in the end. That's where he was a top 5 pick his junior year. He fell when he got moved to 4-3 end as a senior. He's really not fast enough to be a good pass rusher in the 4-3. What the Jets will get out of Coples is less than what they got out of Shaun Ellis as a 3-4 end and about the same as they got out of him as a 4-3 end. If they want him to be a high impact player they need to let him play over a guard.
Where has this guy been?!?! Did he play last night?? 0 sacks in 5 games for a DE thats on the field for every single snap. He's in his second year and hes not a rookie like couples. Some will say "hes an amazing run stopper" thank God he is. Instead of being 31st in the league against the run we would be 32nd. Guy had been a HUGE disappointment this season...
