    ^^^

    Fair enough, and good breakdown.

However throwing the ball into the 5th row shouldn't have risked tips/int's. I don't like to see my man making negative plays however. With a guy in his face, and the TE down, throwing it away (from my armchair) seems like a no brainer.

What blew the play up was a defender coming completely unblocked into the backfield.

I agree with much that is said here but it's hard to make a case when we still won the game..you will see the media explode when we lose one and didn't use him in those same situations as yesterday.

yea, ill try and post a screen cap or series of pictures, but that defender off the edge was in on him almost instantly on a play where the play fake right and he was on a design roll left right into that defender. at that point i think instinct takes over.

if you get a chance to see the play again i dont think there is a super safe time to throw it away early. again, that still what you do there, but i dont think it was boneheaded based on the situation he was in and the pressure

i dont think many people want to see him in the wildcat. at least, i havent seen that here or on other jets message boards. There are camps who want to see him used more and used more efficiently.

    mostly:

    1) spread it 5 wide and get him in shotgun - its undeniably when he has been at his best with a pretty large sample last season

    2) used him in short yardage. its what he is most effective for and the best way to incorporate him without disrupting the offense

he isnt michael vick. he isnt a guy who is going to kill you on the edges on designed roll outs.

I'd add that spread 4 wide. or 3 Wide and a TE are better. Run fake to yourself is good. Run fake to someone else who can still block/carry/confuse is better.

i disagree. id rather not have a back, as it just brings 1 more defender into the box. we dont need misdirection with tebow, spread it out, give him holes, and let him pound through them

Fair, but the zone read ought to neutralize one of the guys in the box. Its the more "sustainable" approach since it gives more looks to prepare for.

We're not going to get a full on spread option, with receivers motioning into the backfield. So I'd rather have a RB back there.

Having the back in there, opens up triple option, legit zone read, play action, isolates the back on a LB'er and does numerous positive things. The back allows you to run the entire running array of plays as well. Offtackle, power, iso, draws, all with the qb, while maintaining them for the back.

PS. I love this stuff ><

I want to see him actually line up at RB and FB getting carries and lead blocking.

EXACTLY!!! That's what the haters don't get. Most of us don't like Tebow because of his religion, he's a good guy, etc. Its just interesting football. May not be everyone's cup of tea... but for me, it doesn't get better than implementing a system that many say can't work, and then excelling in it!

Eh, its so different then the west-coast passing/I-formation running game. That have both dominated NFL football for 40ish? years?

I feel like lots of people just don't understand it. So it must be wrong, gimmicky, bush-league, etc.

Lets not pretend like Denver implemented this stuff well last year. They implemented the part I talked about above. They got maybe 5 or 6 pages deep into this playbook.

So far, all we've seen from the jets, is a poor version of the wildcat. =*(

Initially, it was not safe to throw it away. He shucked that first defender, and had a brief window to throw it out of the back of the endzone.

But honestly, there was so little traffic over there, I think he entertained ideas of punching it in (it's not like he can't). And he just got tackled.

It's not like it was a disasterous sack -- you get Tebow over there with only a defender or two, around the goal line, and he was moving forward after shucking the first rusher, I think you have to live with giving him the opportunity to instinctively make a play.

He had gotten out of "disaster land," and I don't think you can just keep throwing it away when your around the goal line. At some point, put some pressure on the defense to make a play -- head for the goal line.

I posted this in a different thread and am serious about using these guidelines for devising how to best use Tim. It's possible to stick to these guidelines and use Tim in plays here and there with good results depending on play design and execution but I believe using Tim in plays here and there is in conflict with getting his best. That's the first delima to overcome, 'whether to use Tim here and there or use Tim in a way to get his best'. Based on my impressions the majority of the comments in this thread, the 'here and there' approach is the prevailing consensus and I agree with many of the suggestions.

Just know I believe we don't get Tim's best if he doesn't have the opportunity to direct a drive.

For all I care, Tim could direct drives to the 1 yard line and let Mark get the ball in from there. I want the fucking win!!!

Except they have been using him under center in short yardage... It hasn't worked.

They also haven't been putting him under center on second and long like you suggest. It becomes 3rd and Long when they put Sanchez in, sure- but Tebow/wild cat offense puts him there.

Only once has Tebow taken his first snap on second down, and it was only second and 5 in Miami territory. That's a nice situation to be in and its not exactly second and long.

The majority of the snaps he's gotten have been on 1st down. He's also been brought in a handful of times in short yardage (BUF/MIA games) and the offense has went backwards or for a no gain.

They are trying to use him in situations where Brad Smith was so effective. Smith would come in on 1st and 10s and get 5, 6 yards then it helps Sanchez because 2nd down and 4 can be a run or a pass and 3rd downs are more manageable.

I think they would even LIKE to be where at a place where they can bring Tebow in on 3rd and 4or5s and he would keep the chains moving. That's where Brad Smith progressed too, but the Tebow-offense is struggling with the 1st and 10s...

I'm not saying it's all Tebow's fault- because I don't think it totally is. But his role on this team is to play the new Brad Smith offense and it isn't working.. If they can't trust that offense to get positive yards on 1st and 10 then they aren't going to use it very much. They've also been burned on the couple times they have used it on short yardage.

As for him not throwing - the Brad Smith offense was effective for years and we saw him throw the ball maybe once. That's what they are trying to do with Tebow. He wasn't brought in to throw the ball - that is what Sanchez is for.

Those goals are mutually conflicting and not necessarily the team's goals.

I think you go short yardage, run-oriented plays. More emphasis than we've seen to date on the direct snap run (and less on the zone read).

The zone read is not a particularly difficult play to stop. It is just an effective way to get the ball to the running back out of shotgun -- the backside read keeps the defense from crashing down. But the goal is to get a good numbers matchup for your back. (It's analogous to the naked boot keeper when you handoff the ball).

So the point is, the zone read is stupid to run when Tebow comes in -- because what it does for you is allows your QB to stay in shotgun all the time (to throw it). It makes shotgun just as effective as under center for run plays -- the zone read becomes the analogous counterpart to the "play action pass" mode that works well from under center.

The Jets misunderstand -- zone read is for a quarterback who's going to be throwing it out of a spread/shotgun a lot. Not the case with Tim.

Tim comes in, they're thinking run, because otherwise they could have just left in Sanchez. That's why they need to line up with a direct snap, "we're coming, can you stop it" attitude. A numbers game, with power blocking schemes. Something that the defense cannot stop unless it sells out against the run -- then pop them with an occasional pass for an explosive play.

So I disagree with run pass balance -- establish it with heavy doses of empty backfield, power blocking dives.

I'm so glad that we have such a storied football consultant on this humble message board. I wonder if we can get Sparano to create an account here so that you can inform a professional coach of 28 years that he 'dosen't understand' offensive concepts, or his player's skill sets.
