If the jets toss revis the best CB contract ever in week 3 -- why wouldn't he take it? Why would he risk saying no in hopes of crazy bidder coming in last minute? He learned yesterday that an injury can happen at any time for any reason. he likes playing in NY and for Rex.
See, i think Revis will get an offer from someone that is just downright absurd...if he comes back healthy. Teams have done it to less talented guys in the past and the Jets seem to be reluctant to pay Darrelle
You haven't been watching Darrelle Revis, Feinsod and Schwartz very well. There's a lot of water under that bridge for us to judge the flow by. Revis opening position is going to be $17 million a year for 6 years or so. That's $102 million, and they're going to want at least half of it guaranteed and they're going to want the salaries front-loaded. Even if the Jets wanted to counter that offer they can't because it's so out of bounds. So Revis will wind up on the market and the only question will be whether or not an owner like Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones can find the cap space to make the silly offer. If not Revis will sign somewhere for about $84 million over 6 years with more than half guaranteed. He won't sign with the Jets though. They had their chance when he was offering them the first deal mentioned above. The only way the Jets retain Revis is if the cap expands significantly by 2014. Then Woody might just decide to pay the silly money because Revis Island is easy to promote to sell tickets.
A big name free agent is always worth more to the unsuspecting buyer on the open market than to the team that had him. That's how the Jets lost Coles, Thomas, Hall and Morton to the Skins in 2003. It's how they lost McKenzie to the Giants in 2005. It's very hard to pay a premium to keep what you already have but it's easy to do that to get something you think you need. That's just simple psych.
At the rate things are going Rex isn't going to be in NY all that long. It's going to be all about the money for Revis, just like it has since he was drafted.
Though ACL surgery is a long recovery process, the injury is not "career" threatening anymore, upon first injury. Revis will be back to 100% for next season and that means he will command maximum $$.
This soon to be 7 or 8 win season will only help Darrelle ask for more money and knowing the penny pinchers Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum have become (unless your name is Santonio Holmes), I could see this leading to another training camp holdout and him getting hurt again (hamstring, like in 2010) in 2013. Jets should pay him. Many of athletes have come back from torn ACL's and regained their greatness. Revis deserves the coin. No great player should play on a one year deal.
I think the Jets will like to head into next season with Revis locked up. I think they will likely take a look at his health, but will eventually re-sign him. This injury could force Revis into signing the contract offer knowing that another injury could end his career or significantly decrease his value. I would expect them to agree to a new deal before next year that works for both teams.
Think Jets stance on Revis will be determined by how well they finish this season. If Jets actually make the playoffs then I'm not seeing Jets agreeing to a Mario Williams contract. Everyone that says it's impossible Revis can walk away is thinking with their hearts & not their heads. Revis deserves to be paid but does he deserve to be one of the top 5 players in the NFL after coming off ACL injury? If you disagree then what do you do if Revis & his agent think so. This season the Jets had Revis & numerous holes that they couldn't afford to fill. Salary Cap management is critical. They got very lucky that Turner stepped up @ RT. Also got lucky Slauson (a 6th round pick) was able to step up & play LG when Vlad wasn't ready. You can't rely on stuff like that consistently. Eventually a team needs to spend money to ensure talented players are in their starting lineup ... or consistently hit on the early draft picks.
It really would be a huge break for the Jets if we could get Revis to sign like a 6~ year 60 million deal before the season. Grossly underpaid, but hey he rolled the dice and shit happened. Its not like hell be broke anyway. But I still expect him to play out the year, hit the open market, and ask for 100 million +
The only way we don't keep Revis is if Kyle Wilson emerges into an elite CB this year. We've seen injuries push players in the past, this could be exactly what KW needs. If this happens, I doubt we resign Revis. We'll save a crapload of cap space, especially we we cut Scott and Pace after this year. We'll have cap room to sign an elite pass rusher depending on who's available and then some. Only problem is I don't see that happening.
If you looked at our cap situation, we certainly dont, and wont, have the cap space to sign an elite pass rusher. We have two UFA guards in Moore and Slauson, a ufa HB in Greene, two UFA safeties in Landry/Bell. This team has holes all over that NEED filling, and we dont exactly have the cap space to do it. Spending it all on an elite pass rusher, and well have major problems. If Elis/Coples/Wilkerson cant solve our pass rushing issues then were not competing for a superbowl anyway.
Man...reading this stuff is depressing me. Sure I understand the difficulty of trying to build a championship caliber team while remaining under the cap, and that paying too much to one player can be detrimental to this. But comon'...we are fans of the Jets, which is a team made up of players. And I don't know about the rest of you but Darrelle Revis happens to be my favorite Jet ever. And honestly, it would be absolutely heart breaking to watch him suit up for another team. Do whatever it takes to keep him because that's what you do when you get a once in a generation player that the fanbase loves. Just my 2 cents.
its up to Revis as much as it is to the Jets If hes gonna be a fuckhead, you cant just bendover and cave in to all his demands. If he wants to be the highest paid defensive player ever, and have a bidding war for his services, then being a Jet obviously isnt a priority to him
Good point...I guess in my heart I believe he'll meet the organization half-way, or at least part of the way. We won't know until that day comes, I just hope we don't see Tanny try to low-ball him.
I'm not saying spend it all. It's not about the line, it's about the linebackers. We don't want a DE or DT. Moore will be replaced by Ducasse. Slauson will be resigned and won't break the bank. We need a pass rushing OLB. Cutting Bart Scott and Pace will definitely help our cap situation. Davis should be able to replace Bart, hopefully. Plus Tebow will definitely be cut or renegotiated. We have a bunch of young safeties that could take the reigns next year if they develop, but I sense Landry getting a multi year deal. Obviously too much is still up in the air to say for sure, but I don't see Pace, Thomas, Scott or Moore back next year. We'll probably build our D through the draft, however and use FAs for the offense. I like that idea better because it keeps the D young and the o experienced. Keller will probably get a multi year deal as well next year.
It's a fantasy that Revis will get anywhere near 100 MIL. Revis benefitted from that ridiculous Aso contract in Oakland. Aso's new deal in Philly is 5 years, 60 MIL with 25MIL guaranteed which is 3.5 MIL less than what he got in Oakland the last two years when Revis patterned his negotiating strategy after the Aso deal. Revis last signed for 4 years and 46 MIL with 32.5 guaranteed. He got his 16MIL per year guaranteed the last two years and was playing for 9MIL this year which brought his average down below the top current salaried guys. He is due 6 MIL next year so he made 40 MIL over the last 3 years or 13.3 MIL per year. No way should Tanny blow away the market after Aso took a cut and the other top CB's dont approach the Revis stratosphere compensation wise. Top 10 CB's compenstion in 2012 Years /Total /Guaranteed/Contract Expiration 1. Bailey DEN 4 43 -0- 2014 2. Revis NYJ 4 46 32.5 2013 3. Aso PHI 5 60 25 2016 4. Hall WAS 6 55 22.5 2014 5. Well, the ACL is this season and generally the next season is shaking off the rust. The jets should make a reasonable offer to extend before he gets back on the field...with some measrables to move closer to his position, or let him sit out his last year and be twice damaged goods. I love him on the field, but fate It seems is dealing him a bad negotiating hand.
