big storm today, so Harvey has been scratched (tonight was supposed to be his final start). Hefner will start in his stead, if the game is played. edit: game will be played tomorrow
There are rumors that the Mets are going to trade Ike this winter and make Duda the 1st baseman of the future. That would be a terrible mistake, but it doesnt surprise me that the Mets are even considering this.
Except for one thing - they had a deal in Buffalo and let it get away. They knew years ago that Toronto was ending its lease in Las Vegas in 2012 and they were ending their lease in Buffalo in 2012 years ago. A competent front office would have seen this coming, and would have been making sure they wouldn't end up in this position. For example, they could have sweetened the pot enough to get Buffalo to spurn Toronto's advances and sign an extension before this year's season even started. They could have afforded to make up for the potential increase in attendance coming from Toronto being close (which, to be honest, I doubt is all that much) since it's for the good of the entire franchise. More to the point, it was inevitable that the one truly horrible AAA affiliation would magically transform from the Jays' problem into the Mets' problem, since the Wilpons are grossly incompetent in everything they do.
That can't possibly be true, since it would be monumentally stupid. Which of course means that it is probably is true.
nobody wants las vegas and it's been this way for years. I read a blog from a Blue Jays fan not long ago detailing the problems with Las Vegas and what a disaster it was for the Blue Jays. Great job by the Mets screwing the pooch again. Not that uncommon.
So Harvey was awesome tonight, his last start of the season, and the Mets blew it in the 9th. HILARIOUS.
In many ways this is worse than the collapses of 2007 and 2008 - at least in those years the embarrassment was restricted to a few weeks of the season. This has been two months of play that is absolutely shameful.
Every year my family does picks for the MLB season. One of the things we pick are Mets wins. I picked 70 wins. In July they had like 55 wins and I thought I would be surpassed by at least 10. Now, I might have been too generous!
My opening day prediction was 67 wins. I'm not gonna be that far off but early on it looked they would at least play .500 but wow have things gone south. I think Colin Cowherd hit the nail on the head this morning with Ron Darling when he called the Mets a "dead franchise"
Bud Selig: "I have a lot of faith in the Wilpons....I don't consider the Mets a problem in any way, shape or form. They're on the right track." Why don't you take that bullshit and shove it, Bud.
Rock bottom.... 16-1 and Hefner doesn't even record an out. The sad thing is it could be much much worse.(and probably will be)
If this happens I'll stop rooting for the Mets until Wilpon sells the team. Thats just too much, I wont be able to take it any more.
Should Terry lose his job? I know the roster is bad, but what has happened to this team is just embarrassing, and depressing. The coach in this spot has to go IMO. He has quit, and they have quit on him. This team stinks from top to bottom. The owners, Sandy, Terry, the players all suck. It's just so damn frustrating!
I think the batters suck. Only two are good (Davis and Wright). Tejada is also a worthwhile starter mainly because of defense and a big time hitter is not necessary at his position. Collins has admitted on the Francesser show that he has no idea anymore on how to get the batters to hit better. He has tried everything. It is because they suck. He said wholesale changes need to be made. I don't blame the manager for the sucking. I blame ownership, the GM and his moneyball henchman and the players for the sucking. If the Mets want to make a managerial change, then please let it be to Larry Bowa or Wally Backman so we can be entertained by seeing stuff get broken in the dugout during fits of rage. I think Bowa will become the Astros manager. Also, my new favorite team will be whichever one wins the World Series.
The Mets have to seriously consider trading Wright. He can see the obvious point that they are not going to be good in the foreseeable future, which means the only reason he will stay is if he is vastly overpaid. Unfortunately, he has proven this year that he is just not good enough any more to be worth being vastly overpaid, especially when the owners aren't going to spend. This will of course completely alienate whatever is left of the fan base, and make the team unwatchable for years, but the horrific way the Wilpons have let this team deteriorate just doesn't give any alternative that I can see. They have succeeded in completely destroying this franchise. I would never have thought that baseball owners could be forced out for being incompetent, but after it happened in LA that is obviously not true if the will exists at major league baseball. Unfortunately, Selig is buddies with Wilpon, so the Mets are doomed to this kind of garbage for years to come.
I think they have to trade Wright, there is no reason to keep him around. You are not going to build a WS contending team around him. He's not the best player in the game or even at his position and I don't think they really have much choice. Cut your losses and get some prospects. If you're going to suck and not spend money no reason to suck and as you said overpay for an above average but not great player. At this point they should just trade anything that is tradeable and be among the worst teams in baseball and build from the bottom up. Get some major league ready prospects (sadly with what this team has they won't get any stars) and see if you can find some talent in the farm. I was all ready to waive my white flag and then they had to go and move the AAA team to Vegas and suck me back in. I'm potentially moving to Socal in the near future and if I do then it's over. I will bail on this franchise and root for the Angels who while seriously underachieving at least have a few great players and some good up and coming talent as well as a top tier ownership and management in place. I could never root for the Dodgers because my late grandmother who was a Brooklynite would come back from the dead and haunt me if I did.
A few years ago, the Mets were my 1a team. Now, they're my third team. I honestly don't really care about them at all anymore. I just like to make fun of them at this point.
I think a lot of fans can tolerate the losing...look at the amount of Jet/Knick fans but what fans have an issue with is the gross incompetance and unaccountability of the ownership.
