Sorry, but this has been explained many times. The head coach has to tell the ref exactly what he is challenging, he can not say challenge the entire play. Check your facts.

That's why the ref has to state clearly, to the TV camera, what is being reviewed.

I can't really dog these replacements because I can't stand the regular officials either.

This is wrong, they must have mentioned the opposite about 5 times during the game yesterday.

It's not wrong, it has been discussed at great length several times in the past. Or do you choose to believe the broadcasters because they said what you liked?

I honestly don't think they are that much worse than the normal refs

People make a big deal about the replacement refs because they are paying closer attention now. But i can remember any year there is always people complaining how bad the refereeing is

They are only allowed to challenge a specific detail
    but
The whole play is supposed to be reviewed.

If there was a down by contact, the time, the yards everything in the play is supposed to be looked at.
but They are NOT allowed to call a separate infraction or anything else "illegal".

The refs missed the knee down which would have made the challenge moot. That was supposed to be looked @ also.

ftr, The Replacements are not doing a bad job... actually, I'm used to the regular refs giving us the shaft anyway so these guys are a relief...lol

I just went through the Instant Replay section of the Rulebook and it doesn't really specify either way, oddly.

blaming the replacement refs is the most convenient excuse that the losers are currently using for poor performances. some people conveniently forget that the regular refs are pretty terrible all by themselves.

the NFL should be ashamed at this replacement ref situation. They have i guess not blown too many calls but makes the whole league look amateur. It's bad enough the league is turning into arena football with all the throwing and scoring

I heard it from Mike Pereira who is the guru on officiating. I've also heard it countless other times. Anything can be reviewed during a play. Your post is incorrect. End of story.

Which is exactly why many times you see a challenge that is reversed like say for a ball that was ruled a catch but was dropped and they go back and look at the clock to see how much time should be added back to the clock. I don't think the coach is telling the ref when he throws the challenge flag that they need to add 8 seconds back to the clock. That is done by the officials.

The phantom PI on Tone is the single worst call I've ever seen. It was just wholly imaginary. Awful.
