It is homeristic to look at the roster, which Clyde Gates is CURRENTLY on, and think the only reason why Gates should be unquestioned as the slot receiver is, as you imply, due to some coming stellar performances by him. Now if you meant to say he would be the UNQUESTIONED slot receiver by default, I would of course acknowledge that would not be homeristic.
Jeremy Kerley simply won't let that happen. Kerley will be a force this season after a strong finish last year.
The scenario for Gates making an impact this year is that the Jet's WR's can't stay healthy and so he gets a lot of snaps as a result. He's just not going to see the field over Jeremy Kerley unless Kerley is hurt or in the doghouse for some reason.
Oh you mean like Davone Bess? Clyde Gates needs to learn how to run routes, and even then his strength wouldn't be the slot. He has elite speed, not quickness. This idea is being pretty optimistic to put it lightly
Thank you, I made a post like this about this guy a few days ago, it takes more than a 40 time to be able to man the slot. Just because the guy is short doesn't mean he's a good fit for that position. It just means a he's probably a bad fit everywhere.
Yep. And they looked at Clyde pretty extensively on Hard Knocks the other night. The coaches mentioned that while the opposing DBs had to respect his speed by backing off the line, his horrible footwork and route running neutralize whatever advantage he has from raw ability. Footwork and route running are pretty damn important when it comes to manning the slot. (BTW, not saying that the show is the definitive tool for analyzing a player, but it was helpful)
Eggzactlee. And even if that happens, there's no reason to expect Gates to succeed. We've seen plenty of him, and so did Miami. And they got rid of him. next!
