Jets signed P Robert Malone and waived DT Isaako Aaitui. Malone will handle the Week 1 punting duties after the release of T.J. Conley. Malone has averaged 42.2 yards on 57 punts with the Bucs and Lions the past two seasons.
They cut Aaitui because they realized nobody on the face of the earth would ever be able to pronounce his name properly.
so they cut the back up noseguard who they picked up and cut dixon to make room for... who are they going to replace his spot with, considering they let go of conley for malone they didn't need to get rid of anybody.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Jets have signed ex-Chargers punter Robert Malone, per source. Malone had a 44.8 average (26th in NFL) & 39.9 net avg (19th) in preseason Definitely must have been a money thing..maybe we saved $1.98.
And apparently now have 52 on the roster. Has to be a reason they keep shaving money from the cap number.
Next year's cap..big trouble it would seem. Conley actually punted better than this guy did (albeit in a limited basis). http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/punting
I saw those stats - its hardly great and all I really know about the Chargers is that their special teams have tended to suck
Conley stunk all last year. This is about trying a fresh face more than saving 70k I suspect and it seems like a positive sign with a chance to make another move if this guy flops too. People are way too upset about Dixon cut. He really adds nothing between DeVito, Pouha and the emergence of Ellis as a potential monster. This move shows they were cutting Dixon mainly over his uselessness to us rather than saving 200k for a worse version of him. Next year's cap isn't nearly as bad as it looks at first blush either with 3 overpaid and expendable over the hill LB's to cut, Brandon Moore, etc. http://nyjetscap.com/2012_Articles/claytoncap.php
According to NY Jets cap whilst the Jets wont have much flexibility next year (barring trades) they are not in any real cap trouble. Cutting Scott, Pace and Eric Smith saves nearly $20m against the cap after this season. If Ellis plays well it may be the end of Pouha as well saving another $4m.
Plus the inevitable big restructure or two and we're in no real jeopardy if our key guys stay healthy and productive. We had no depth for the last two years, good depth this year and should have a lot of freedom to play BPA in the draft after Coples and Hill fell to us.
This is encouraging news: Malone was most recently a member of the San Diego Chargers this preseason. Before that, he played for the Lions in 2011, recording only 5 punts. His most extensive playing time came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He punted in 12 games that year, with an average of 41.5 yards per punt. He was a specialist at dropping punts in side the 20, dropping 17 of his 52 punts that deep, which amounted to 32.7% of his punts. If he can be that good with the Jets, he will turn out to be a real asset, as with the type of game the Jets are planning on playing in 2012, field position will be of the utmost importance.
I saw this guy when his school (Fresno State) played Rutgers at the Meadowlands a couples of years ago. While he doesn't have a big leg, his strength is in directional punting and placing the ball, kinda in the Jeff Feagles mold.
