Ground n' Pound without a FB? (this is why you shouldn't let Rex "handpick" guys, even late in the draft, especially on O)
Starting to really think we really don't have the starting RB and/or RB depth to go with G&P. In fairness, maybe a lot has to do with the OL.
If it can make you feel any better we have no blocking TEs and our starting OGs are better in pass pro than run blocking.
One of the best run blocking & pass blocking FB's in the league last year. He's young with room for development and in the 3rd year of a cheap rookie deal. We're running a "ground and pound" offense. Why would we just cut him?
Was he really? (not a sarcastic question) Brian Costello @BrianCoz Rex won't comment about John Conner's roster spot. Interesting #nyj
According to PFF grading he was the 3rd best run blocking FB and the 5th best pass blocking FB. They graded him better than 2010 Tony Richardson in both categories. Then there is this: Brian Costello @BrianCoz Rex won't comment about John Conner's roster spot. Interesting #nyj So maybe I'm wrong.
Time to bring this thread back from the dead......Rumblings.....Seems some of the fanbase are down on Connor! As I didn't see the final game tonight some discussion would be appreciated!
Still wouldn't make sense to me if he got cut. FB's are for blocking and he's a good one. He's also cheap.
FBs are for whatever you want them to do in the offense. Some offenses would rather have a guy who has some versatility, run the ball on occasion, catch the ball out of the backfield AND block. Conner is no Lorenzo Neal, that's for sure. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=73577&highlight=john+conner Here's last week's thread on Conner. I thought it was 25% he'd get cut, then amended it to 10%. Then again, part of the reason I thought he'd get cut was Josh Baker. Baker's hurt now. I still think he'll be on the roster, but there's a lot more smoke now that he could be expendable. The main reason I wouldn't cut him is because our TE situation is ugly when it comes to blocking, so hopefully Conner can play in lieu of 2-TE sets.
What makes Belichek great is that he uses the players to their strengths and doesn't ask them to play a role they are weak in. Conner is a Great Hitter and ST player. Asking him to be that backfield pass catcher on so many plays is a bit asinine. Yeah, I'd love to have him do it all but he sin't that type of player. as For Ganaway goes, I liked our pick of him and really didn't realize how big he actually was considering he is pretty mobile for his size.
Not really sure if that's true. Belichick purposely drafts guys who are versatile and can play a lot of different roles. Edelman and Troy Brown weren't playing to their strengths at DB, but they were solid enough in that role where BB didn't mind playing them there. Offensively, having Tom Brady also gives you the freedom to use people in their correct roles. New England likely wouldn't have a player like Conner because he's not useful unless he's lead blocking. They'd prefer someone more versatile. Hell, the Pats' likely fullback this year has played both fullback AND linebacker in the NFL so far in his career (Spencer Larsen).
