The Jets claimed punter Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Browns today. He will compete with T.J. Conley, general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.

    Any thoughts?

Just did a quick google. Apparently he impressed early in camp. Don't know much about the other Browns punter but this guy is young and honestly he can't be worse than Conley.

He's an UDFA who has bounced around from the Bears to the Jags to the Browns to us. I'm not sure if he's actually played or not, though.

Hopefully he will beat out Conley even if he's not great.

Yea he is only 24 so its not surprising to be bouncing around as punter at this point in his career.

Bears had him originally, and liked him enough to put in a waiver claim for him when Cleveland released him.....

I just hope the offense can provide him enough chances to kick on Thursday so he can be evaluated. :) Take a knee on 3rd and 1 from the Eagle 40 and see if he can pin them deep. :)

The one thing our offense is good at is giving our punter plenty of chances so no problem there. I dont know why there wasn't a punting competition in camp cause our current punter basically stinks. Another position that Mr T. Thought was fine until Conley or whatever his name is shanks like 3 punts in a row. That's a quick way to lose a game.

This is good news. It absolutely can't hurt to bring in competition at this point. Our punting game hasn't been the same since Weatherford ditched.

definitely all for competition. the kid is worth a look, and if he outperforms conley in a short period of time he's going to keep the guy....the jets wouldn't claim a punter at this point unless they were thinking along the same lines.

it could also be a move to light a fire under conley, which i think they should have done from the start.

I still remember being so disgusted with Conley when he shanked a 13 yard punt in the Denver game last year from our own 20 yard line giving the Broncos the ball already in FG range in the 1st quarter. It just gave me a bad feeling all game long. The D held them to 3 but it was just another example of how much pressure the defense was constantly put under all season long with the pick 6's, turnovers and shanked kicks. Would love if someone can push Conley out.

Or just punt on 3rd and 1. Its not like our 2nd team offense would be picking up that first down ;)

I think Conley will win out the competition. Just a gut feeling.

Not a big deal since Jets will not have to punt much this season. Just wanted to see what it would feel like to say that.

Hard to see how it will really be a competition with about three days before final cuts.

Well, you would think Conley and Lanning would go back and forth on Thursday and see who punts better. If they do this, my money is on Lanning. Conley may be able to punt the shit out of a ball in practice, but we need someone who doesn't shank punts from within our own territory.

I'm guessing he's just here to save Conleys leg by taking some kicks.

    Great leg

Lanning made all sec teams after being a walk on at south Carolina. Was both their punter and place kicker which can come in very handy in a pinch. Webt Undrafted last year and was invited to bears camp but was cut before the season. Signed this year with the jags but once they drafted a punter so early in the draft was placed on waivers and claimed by the browns. Had a great foray preseason game bit then saw his opportunities drop as the bears appeared to be leaning towards Hodges. Young kid with a great head on his shoulders and is just waiting to prove he is an nfl punter when given a true chance.
