The silver lining is that Ellis Lankster has looked pretty good so far this year. He could probably fill Wilson's role. I don't mind sacrificing a small piece of our elite secondary to guarantee Sanchez doesn't have another year getting pummeled and sack fumbled. It doesn't matter how great the defense is, even if they pitch near shutouts, the offense needs to score and they can't do it without adequate protection. I can't even count the amount of drive ending sacks we had last year.
I heard yesterday that the word in Detroit is they want the Lions backup RT for Wilson. I couldnt find a single article to back that claim but now that ESPN 1050 is reporting it, it might be true.
Remember these gems? Dave DeGuglielmo on Wayne Hunter (in May): "Until they shoot me dead in my office, that son of a gun is going to be the starting RT" "The last thing that I would ever want to see happen is not have Wayne Hunter as the RT"
Wait for cuts after week 3 of preseason. Somebody who can play RT has got to be available between then and opening day.
I heard this morning from the lady that does this thing on TV that this thing will happen with a bunch of athletes wearing pads who hit each other and stuff that will affect the people they play with. I heard it was true.
I agree, just another first waisted. He is a guy with tons of Cover CB potential too. He's a starter in Detroit if this were too happen which would be good for him, but I'd rather see him here.
@KristianRDyer: Hunter on the demotion "I was waiting for it to be honest with you." What a fucking tool.
I can't help but to picture him saying this with that infamous shit eating grin of his spread across his dumb face.
I need some help here,,,,bear with me,,,,,,,so most of us knew after just a few games last year that Hunter was a problem not an answer ! So this free agency period comes and goes ,the draft comes and goes and NOT only is our pathetic RT position not addressed but they give WFH the starting position and a pretty big raise ! I mean did this guy really get a 2 million dollar raise from Tanny so he could ride the bench ? So now fast forward and it is 2 and a alf weeks before the season and we are going to "try " Howard at RT ? This is a joke rite ? I mean this guy should have been getting first team reps in minicamp not just before the 3rd preseason game ,,,am I crazy ? I fully realize that Howard could possibly play well, but to give Hunter a big payday when most of thought he should not even be on the team, and to be searching for a lineman now is ridiculous ! Now there a rumors that Kyle Wilson is being shopped for a RT ! As I said this is a joke right ? Rant over :breakdance:
Man, the Jets f*cked up this Hunter situation. The guy was heinous last year. As a result, they not only don't demote him to backup and attempt to replace him, they give him a significant pay raise in the offseason. Now, weeks before the season starts, we appear to be shipping a recent #1 pick for a "serviceable" RT as a way to cover the f*ckup? Damn.
Howard was getting first team reps pretty consistently just not more than Hunter (Other than when he was injured). I agree that something should have been done earlier, but maybe they were waiting until this game to give him more time to show what he can do? The starters should be playing til close to the end of the third. Rex doesn't play his starters in the 4th game.
My take on this move is to see how Howard handles himself against other teams ones. My belief is the Jets are Hoping for a slightly above average performance from him to reduce the pressure on the team to replace that RT spot ASAP. This will allow the Jets a little breathing room as well some leverage when they try to put up a more seasoned vet in a few weeks. So by starting Howard they are showing they are not so desperate that they are willing to mortgage too much for a one or two year rental. Also Howard may surprise and step up and lock up the RT spot for years to come.
The exact name I heard was Gosder Cherilus for Wilson. Gosder was the 17th pick of the 2008 draft. The only reason why Gosder is up for trade is because the Lions drafted Riley Reiff in the draft this year.
