What Zach was getting at was that if the league average for all types of 3rd down conversions is at 38%, and considering the average run conversion percentages should be higher than that number considering the situations teams would run in, the league average for passing only 3rd down conversions should be lower than 38% (how much depending on the pass/run ratio on 3rd down) and thus if your average QB threw the ball 100 times on 3rd down, they'd have gotten less than 38 first downs for that year. The median for this would be interesting, since it'd give an indication on how many QBs he's better than in 3rd down conversions rather than looking at means.
Absolute gifts from the Colts and Bengals, a #1 defense and a #1 rushing game helped the Jets to 2 title game appearances. Marky-Mark was just along for the ride. When the Jets really needed Sanchez's help, he craped his pants in the final 3 games last year with the playoffs on the line.
I get the gift from the Colts argument but the Bengals? Playing at home against a team they beat not easily but didn't have much trouble with in the playoffs on the road. Not a gift at all or even close. Sanchez was definitely along for the ride on the road to the playoffs in 09 but he helped greatly to win the 2 playoff games. As of 2010 Sanchez won us a bunch of games with 4th quarter come backs or in OT. Sanchez played poorly down the stretch but there were a lot of things going wrong it wasn't just him. From playcalling to defense, to the RT we just didn't play well. Also Sanchez playing banged up went from what was looking like his best statistical year at 21TDs and 11Int to not so good.
You had the gift of tebow in the div rd and a dropped TD pass and missed chip shot to get to the SB so stop talking about gifts. You don't make back to back title games w/o quality QB play in this era where the AFC has been strong. Sanchez sucked to end the year but so did everyone else. In '09 he played great in postseason helping us get to the title game, in '10 he outplayed Brady at Foxboro in the div rd then nearly led us back at Pitt. We got a qtr and a half of Indy backups in a close game at the time, should we have lost to backups like Buf '04 or NYJ '93?
I dont know where all this "paid him like a franchise QB" stuff comes from. Look around the league at the QB salaries, the Bills paid him the salary of a slightly above average QB, which is what he is. Is he a top 10 QB? No. Is he getting paid like one? No. His base salary doesn't crack the top 10. He is getting $24 mil guaranteed. That's it. The Bills front-loaded it so that if he doesnt work out, they won't have much guaranteed money to pay, if it all, in the future years. If you want even an average starting QB, you're going to have to pay him. Its just the nature of the position. If Sanchez were a free agent this past offseason, he would have signed a similar deal. Probably more, since he is younger.
There is much ammo available to take shots at Sanchez last year. Hell I fired away at him myself more than a couple of times. But we're coming to the end of the off season, and not a minute too soon, and we will soon replace those kinds of debates with more current asessments. In short the time has come for Sanchez to show he's better than he ended last season. And if he does that, we can leave all that in the rear view mirror.
You confuse me dude. Regarding your 3rd paragraph, there was nothing in my post that stated to the contrary. But it doesn't address the point I made. I don't know how often other QBs got first downs when throwing the ball, so I don't have proper context to judge Sanchez' 35% number. In fact, it would be interesting to know what teams' run/pass ratio was on 3rd down, but I couldn't find any data on it. I LOL at the idea that it's Shotty's fault Sanchez can't read a coverage, but whatever, believe what you want.
