Right. Imagine if he puts up "Clowney numbers"? It'll be off the charts. Brett Ratliff, where are you? I like Hill a lot, but rookie WR's in this league? I don't know exactly how much of a factor he'll be THIS year.
He will be a factor because he will back up the safeties and prevent defenses from stacking the box, and his run-blocking. Rookie WRs aren't usually capable of having 50, 60 receptions, but his 35 receptions can go for 800 yards easily.
When man coverage gets beat it often gets beat over the top for long yards. The Jets play man coverage, but a lot of others don't. So hearing that Hill is struggling underneath but has a few highlight reels over the top... I'll temper my enthusiasm.
I honestly think Hill will give us the same production Braylon Edwards gave us in his first year here and honestly that would be incredible. With Bray Bray we were able to stretch the field, and his physicality also helped in getting YAC as he always fought for yardage.
That's very true, but who's to say Schilens won't be the starter? I think Hill is much more talented, but Schilens is more experienced. I don't see Hill putting up huge numbers. Most likely 25-30 receptions and anywhere from 400-600 yards which is a good season for a rookie WR.
You do realize most of the time you hear about him beating someone deep, its him beating Revis. So it is somewhat impressive, but on the other hand it is only training camp. I'm not expecting anything ridiculous. Maybe 33 for 550ish yards and 4 or 5 scores.
We had no one at all who could back up DB's and threaten to go deep last year, Hill will help out in many areas with his speed alone. He'll help the run game by backing off defenders and blocking on runs, passing game by keeping a safety deep off of keller and double coverage off Tone more (I dont think I remeber Plax getting doubled one time), and like someone said if he can be our Torrey Smith this year that's all we need is a deep ball here and there to keep defenses honest. Just do what you do young man, and the rest will come with experience.
To get a better idea of what rookie wrs are capable of I looked at all the recievers in the first 2 rounds of last years draft AJ Green 65 receptions 1057 yards Julio Jones 54 rec 959 yards Jonathon Baldwin 21 rec 254 yards Titus Young 48 receptions 600 yards Torrey Smith 50 receptions 841 yards Greg Liittle 61 receptions 709 yards Randall Cobb 25 receptions 375 yards And Baldwin was the 4th wr on a run first team with no qb, and Cobb was like the 5th or 6th receiver on the Packers Oh also 800 yards on 35 receptions, probably not easy. Considering that would be 22 yards/catch significantly higher than any receiver in the league last year
tfineZ - Although this sounds nice, outside of speed and height, Hill is a much different rookie than Moss was. Moss came into a system with an established passing system with a dependable receiver in Carter and a veteran qb in Cunningham. Moss was never expected to block in the running game. He only had to blow the lid off the top of the coverage. Moss also wasn't expected to develop his underneath route tree. I hope that you are expecting a more complete football player in Hill for our team.
I expect a Titus Young type of year for Hill. He'll be in the fold but expect Kerley and Holmes to get the majority of the workload.
Do you honestly expect a rookie receiver out of a triple option college offense to be as successful as a NFL receiver with multiple years of experience and at least one year of success? Interesting! I am extremely excited to have Hill on our team but how many rookie receivers can you name in the last 10 years that had the same impact for their team as Braylon had for us his first year?
Who compared Hill to Moss? Moss is a HOFer with an extremely high football IQ, the best deep threat WR ever, not to mention one of the best at that position period. The height and speed coming out of the draft is the only comparison that should be made.
You're joking right? His total college stats: Rec - 49 Yards - 1,248 Avg - 25.5 TD - 9 So in 49 catches we're just going to dub him the Randy Moss come again?... I think not.
23 yards per catch? uuummm no. From a guy in a run-oriented offense, he does not have very much polish on his route running. About half of his production his junior year was against 3 teams. He does have the athletic skillset that makes him very intriguing, but coming from the offense that he did, I would temper my expectations for him to being a consistent player until he gets acclimated to the way defenses play.
As a rookie I'm not expecting much from Hill when it comes to receiving yards. As long as he's enough of a threat to prevent opposing D from constantly stacking the box then he'll be a "success". If he can do: 35 catches & 400 yards while forcing an opposing safety to play honest then it'll be a great season for him.
Hill will do great things in his career. He will start this year and hopefully get better from there. However, we can't expect greatness as a rookie. It's hard not to because the Jets have a very mediocre WR corps (in terms of experience), but Hill will do a lot better if the pressure on him is not as high.
