I wasn't a fan of the Coples selection, but I'm keeping an open mind and hope he has a good 1st season. Rex worked out Quinton and fell in love with his physical ability. I was looking in a different direction with our 1st pick...Hightower/Floyd were my Rd 1 targets. That being said, I'm happy with Hill and Davis in Rd 2 & 3. I just think we could have drafted an OT in the 1st 3 rds, instead of Coples.
Thanks, as a Pats fan that is comforting to know. It still doesn't mean that Coples won't be a beast, but it doesn't hurt to see someone else confirm your team's pick
Bedard is a guy who takes his job seriously. He seems to know his x's and o's and works hard to report what happens at practices. He doesn't do a lot of speculation or try and stir stuff up. Pats fans are lucky to have at least 2 guys in the area (Bedard and Reiss) who do more reporting and allow the fans to speculate on their info, instead of resorting to speculation or intentionally creating a story themselves. So when Bedard goes out on a limb to speculate that Hightower is a DROY candidate, I guess he's impressed with the kid. BTW- apparently Hightower's football IQ is through the roof as well as his work ethic. He's been thrown into a lot of positions (ILB, OLB, DE) and hasn't looked out of place or overwhelmed at any of them. Reportedly the biggest surprise has been how well he's been in coverage, especially on backs coming out of the backfield. Not as good on the TE's, but no one has been able to cover Hernandez to date It hasn't all been good. Missing 3 of your OL starters doesn't help, especially when your most versatile back up decides to retire (better now than in September i guess). McCourty reportedly is still getting beat, though not as often as last season, and Brady seems to spend most of his time pissed off at himself and everyone else when a play isn't run perfectly. As BB is want to say. "some things are better than others. The guys are working hard and we are just trying to be better tomorrow than we were today" Then he'd follow up with even more innocuous cliches just in case any of the reporters were not yet asleep, dreaming of pressers with a HC more like Rex
I remember there were quite a few Jets posters very optimistic on Hightower in the draft forums. Considering Coples was expected to be drafted earlier, I'm curious what the Jets would've done if Coples (and Floyd) were off the board. Sucked to see the Pats grab him. Haven't read any articles doubting Coples physical abilities so I'm still thinking positive with his selection. === Reading the WFH threads and learning Slauson working RT is making me think once again about DeCastro. Perhaps the solution to RT was to draft a stud guard and move Slauson out there. Slauson+Vlad+WFH ... maybe the competition would be able to produce one average to above average RT.
I work with a woman whose husband was a defensive coach for UNC for the time Coples was there. I had the opportunity to speak with him after the Jets drafted him. He basically told me that the rumors of work ethic are pure bullshit. He was pretty confident in his statement that Coples would be an impact player at the next level. This coach who will not be back due to the change in regimes did express it was difficult for the entire team dealing with NCAA investigations/suspensions in the beginning of 2010 followed by losing their coach (Davis) a month before the season in 2011.
I have a cousin whose sister in-laws brother is tight with a dude who's the nephew of a guy who once worked with a guy who's dad used to clean up shit in the NC lockerroom, and he said Coples is a pretty nice guy.
I thought they would draft Hightower tbh- He looks like the real deal and I cannot stand who got him...
well if jet fans think coples is the "answer" to our age old question who is rushing the QB, we have another thing coming...... me thinks he was a flexibility and "value" pick - gives the jets flexibility along the line and the jets perceived him as value at 16.... its pretty clear now the jets speed pick was scooped up by seattle and they had to resort to plan B or C or D for that matter. we'll see how it unfolds but the team is still lacking in some perimeter/edge speed - opposing offenses will mostly likely attack the numbers instead of inside. oh well cant have it all.
Hes not THE answer. He's part of the answer. Coples and Wilk strong up front with Maybin improving. Pace being healthy. No one thinks Coples is coming out like Jared Allen. Just hoping that a bunch of things go right including Coples to help our pass rush.
I do not get your fucking juvenile retarded response. I am telling you that I personally spoke to a Division I college football coach who happened to coach on his side of the ball not a fucking grapevine scenario. There is not a doubt that Coples has the physical tools - I am just letting people know that according to coach who saw him in practice every day for 2 years - did not think effort, work ethic, commitment etc. were an issue to be concerned about.
You dont think a guy who was considered one of the best pass rushers in the draft period who also gives us the personnel to switch to a 4-3 will result in a substantial improvement on our pass rush ? Honest question for not just you, but anyone else who cares to dump on Coples what player in this draft would have a better chance at improving our pass rush than Coples ? Obviously every draft has some guys who kinda just came out of nowhere, but what guy out there do you really see having a bigger immediate impact on the pass rush than Coples?
I think I remember reading somewhere that DeCastro isn't doing so well. It's early, but no pick is a sure thing.
Coples was an absolute dog in college, barely did anything against middle to good competition. Of his 7.5 sacks last season, 4.5 came against East Carolina/Duke/James Madison. Big time programs! If you look at his '10 sack total half came against shit tackles, FSU/Rutgers/Tennessee/William & Marry. I still believe the Jets coaching staff can get the most out of him, but this "talent" mythos needs to be dropped. He's not that talented, padded his stats against scrubs.
Gotta love the SOJF mentality assuming the guy isn't going to be good before seeing him play a down in the pros.
Great guy- I had drinks with him and dinner one night in NYC after the season. In fact it was one full season after he was drafted and the bust smell was just starting. Such a nice kid, we had fun that evening, we went to to some establishments in the city with some others and had a helluva time. Ended up hanging all night with LT and Scotty Pippen that night.... allotta stories on that one!
